The sensory drive hypothesis proposes that environmental factors affect both signalling dynamics and the evolution of signals and receivers. Sound detection and equilibrium in marine fishes are senses dependent on the sagittae otoliths, whose morphological variability appears intrinsically linked to the environment. The aim of this study was to understand if and which environmental factors could be conditioning the evolution of this sensory structure, therefore lending support to the sensory drive hypothesis. Thus, we analysed the otolith shape of 42 rockfish species (Sebastes spp.) to test the potential associations with the phylogeny, biological (age), ecological (feeding habit and depth distribution) and biogeographical factors. The results showed strong differences in the otolith shapes of some species, noticeably influenced by ecological and biogeographical factors. Moreover, otolith shape was clearly conditioned by phylogeny, but with a strong environmental effect, cautioning about the use of this structure for the systematics of rockfishes or other marine fishes. However, our most relevant finding is that the data supported the sensory drive hypothesis as a force promoting the radiation of the genus Sebastes. This hypothesis holds that adaptive divergence in communication has significant influence relative to other life history traits. It has already been established in Sebastes for visual characters and organs; our results showed that it applies to otolith transformations as well (despite the clear influence of feeding and depth), expanding the scope of the hypothesis to other sensory structures.  相似文献

Of the 20 pandalid shrimps species and subspecies reported for the Eastern Central Atlantic (26–36° N), 16 were found in one or more Macaronesian archipelagos (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands) (14–40° N), and 11 of them were recorded to date in the Canary Island waters (27° 30–29° 30 N): Bitias stocki Fransen, 1990; Heterocarpus ensifer ensifer A. Milne-Edwards, 1881; Heterocarpus grimaldii A. Milne-Edwards & Bouvier, 1900; Heterocarpus laevigatus Bate, 1888; Plesionika edwardsii (Brandt, 1851); Plesionika ensis (A. Milne-Edwards, 1881); Plesionika holthuisi Crosnier & Forest, 1968; Plesionika martia martia (A. Milne-Edwards, 1883); Plesionika narval (J.C. Fabricius, 1787); Plesionika williamsi Forest, 1964; and Stylopandalus richardi Coutière, 1905. In the present work, Plesionika antigai Zariquiey Álvarez, 1955 is recorded for the first time from the Canary Islands. As a result of many fishing surveys around the Canary Islands at 27–1550 m depth between 1985 and 1998, information on bathymetric distribution, habitat, size and biology of the 12 Canarian pandalid species is given. The geomorphologic, geographic and oceanographic characteristics of the Canary Islands marine ecosystems could explain the great diversity in the biogeographic patterns of the pandalid species inhabiting this area. The distribution patterns found were: Macaronesian (1 spec.), Atlanto-Mediterranean (1 spec.), Eastern Atlantic warm-temperate (1 spec.), amphi-Atlantic warm (2 spec.), amphi-Atlantic warm-temperate (1 spec.), pantropical (5 spec.), and cosmopolitan (1 spec.).  相似文献

The present study provides fisheries biology knowledge which will allow the implementation of regulatory measures contributing to the sustainability of the fisheries and the conservation of the stout beardfish Polymixia nobilis Lowe, 1838 off the Canary Islands, north eastern Atlantic Ocean. Males ranged between 16.5 and 38.4 cm fork length (FL) and females from 14.2 to 46.5 cm FL. Sex ratio by size classes provided significant differences in classes higher than 36 cm, being clearly unbalanced in favour of females. Individuals in maturing and mature stages were present during all months sampled, although a spawning peak is evident between April and June. Size at first maturity was estimated as 26 cm FL for females and 30 cm FL for males. Age was determined from annuli in whole otoliths. Age range was found to be 0–14 years for fish measuring 14.2 to 46.5 cm FL. It is a slow‐growing and long‐lived species. Significant differences in the growth parameters between sexes were detected. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated for females (n = 213) were L = 45.92 cm LF, k = 0.16 years?1 and t0 = ?2.84 years; and for males (n = 186) L = 36.44 cm LF, k = 0.26 years?1 and t0 = ?2.16 years. Stomach analysis indicated some variations in the feeding habits with growth: individuals of small and medium sizes preyed on crustaceans and fishes, while large specimens preyed mainly on fishes.  相似文献

Information on biometric and biological parameters of Cancer bellianus Johnson, 1861 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Cancridae) off the Canary Islands is given. Crabs examined were collected during experimental fishing surveys during 1974–1998. Carapace length, carapace width, total wet weight, sex and ovigerous condition were determined. This species was caught at depths from 153 to 750 m, the deepest ever recorded. Size frequency distributions were assembled and size-weight relationships were estimated by sex. Sex-ratio as a function of size and depth was determined. The size at first maturity was calculated by analysing the relative growth between the carapace length and the left chela width: 103.5 mm CL in males, 101.2 mm CL in females. Ovigerous females, egg size and fecundity estimates are reported apparently for the first time.  相似文献

Sagittal otoliths from the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions of Serranus cabrilla L. were compared using shape indices (form‐factor, roundness, circularity, rectangularity, ellipticity and eccentricity). Regional differences were best described by form‐factor, circularity and eccentricity variables. The canonical discriminant functions were built with form‐factor or rectangularity indices. The results indicated slight regional variations. The G‐test was the criterion more useful to identify the otolith origin in the discriminant analysis.  相似文献

Ecomorphological changes as a result of natural perturbations in estuarine fish communities were investigated in two South African estuaries (Swartvlei and East Kleinemonde), both before and after the loss of aquatic macrophyte beds in these systems. The fish communities were analysed using an ecomorphological diversity index (EMI) and the results compared to a traditional index, the Shannon-Wiener diversity index. The EMI revealed that the major changes in fish community composition recorded in both estuaries were associated with quantitative variations at the species level. Both estuaries essentially lost their macrophyte beds and ended up with the same type of bottom habitat (bare sediment). In both cases the fish morphological variability decreased immediately after aquatic macrophyte loss and then increased to end above the initial value. The ecomorphological analysis appeared to be sensitive to major ecological disturbances that occurred during the study period and this was confirmed by the morphospace configuration. The results indicate that the ecomorphology of the fish community responds to habitat changes and that this change corresponds to alterations in the representation of the different feeding types. These findings therefore contribute to the measurement of morphological changes in estuarine fish assemblages as a result of habitat changes within the ecosystem and we propose that ecomorphological analyses add another dimension to the information provided by existing diversity indices in studying changing fish communities.  相似文献

Regressions between fish length and otolith size are provided for 40 species from the north‐eastern Atlantic Ocean and 142 species from the Mediterranean Sea. This study was designed to explore the relationships between morphology, motility, osmolality, and fertilization success of rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) spermatozoa. Sperm morphology was analyzed using automated software on stained (Diff-Quick-stain) smears examined under the light microscope. Spermatozoa with longer flagellae were observed to show higher straight-line velocities (VSL) and a more linear movement than those with shorter flagellae. Fertilization success was inversely related to the variables (i) duration of sperm movement, (ii) linearity and (iii) density. Strong relationships were also observed between head and tail lengths and between VSL and fertilization capacity although significance was not reached; the former relationship being positively and the latter inversely related. When outliers were removed, positive correlation was detected between the duration of sperm movement and density and between mean curvilinear velocity (VCL) and the fertilization success. According to these findings, we propose that longer spermatozoa could reach the micropyle of eggs before shorter spermatozoa, but this would only hold for sperm expelled close to the micropyle. If expelled at a distance, then the shorter sperm undergoing more curvilinear movements would find it easier to circulate an egg and fertilize it.  相似文献

The otolith was used to investigate the variability between Aphanopus carbo and Aphanopus intermedius inhabiting the north‐eastern Atlantic Ocean. The results indicate a high degree of morphological affinity between species and areas; a noticeable metabolic change in the otolith shape was noted in the specimens of A. carbo, which may be related to migrations of individuals from shallow water (closer to the continental coast) to deeper water (archipelagos of Madeira and the Canary Islands). The results suggest a single population for both species in the north‐eastern Atlantic Ocean, although not conclusively.  相似文献
