The effects of a filtering device and an air-line apparatus on breathing pattern were studied in healthy men with different physical characteristics and work capacity. The subjects comprised nine construction workers aged 35-44, and nine firemen aged 21-35. The construction workers' mean maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) was 34.5 ml min-1 kg-1, the firemen's 66.9 ml min-1 kg-1. Breathing pattern was analyzed for its components, inspiratory time, expiratory time, breathing frequency, tidal volume, and pulmonary ventilation at rest, during two submaximal treadmill walks when the subjects' absolute work load was equal, and during recovery. Neither the filtering device nor the air-line apparatus had a significant effect on breathing pattern when compared with the control values measured twice with a low-resistance breathing valve. A significantly longer expiratory time, lower breathing frequency, and smaller pulmonary ventilation were found for the firemen with the breathing valve and the industrial respirators. The breathing pattern of the construction workers and the firemen differed, but the alterations were not induced by the use of the filtering device or the air-line apparatus when studied at aerobic work levels up to 60% VO2max.  相似文献

The effects of the trichothecene mycotoxins (acetyl T-2 toxin, T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, palmityl T-2 toxin, diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS), deoxynivalenol (DON), and T-2 tetraol) on bovine platelet function were examined in homologous plasma stimulated with platelet activating factor (PAF). The mycotoxins inhibited platelet function with the following order of potency: acetyl T-2 toxin > palmityl T-2 toxin = DAS > HT-2 toxin = T-2 toxin. While T-2 tetraol was completely ineffective as an inhibitor, DON exhibited minimal inhibitory activity at concentrations above 10×10?4M. The stability of the platelet aggregates formed was significantly reduced in all mycotoxin treated platelets compared to that of the untreated PAF controls. It is suggested that the increased sensitivity of PAF stimulated bovine platelets to the more lipophilic mycotoxins may be related to their more efficient partitioning into the platelet membrane compared to the more hydrophilic compounds.  相似文献

The molds Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium cladosporioides, and the yeast Aureobasidium pullulans, isolated from the leaves of three short-rotation Salix clones, were found to produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Abscisic acid (ABA) production was detected in B. cinerea. The contents of IAA and ABA in the leaves of the Salix clones and the amounts of fungal propagules in these leaves were also measured, in order to evaluate whether the amounts of plant growth regulators produced by the fungi would make a significant contribution to the hormonal quantities of the leaves. The content of ABA, and to a lesser degree that of IAA, showed a positive correlation with the frequency of infection by the hormone-producing organisms. The amounts of hormone-producing fungi on leaves that bore visible colonies were, however, not sufficiently high to support the claim that either the fungal production of ABA or IAA would significantly contribute to the hormonal contents of the leaves of the Salix clones. Presented here is the first comprehensive and updated compilation of history, distribution, and findings of Stejneger's beaked whales (Mesoplodon stejnegeri) in Alaska. Stejneger's beaked whales are a poorly understood, elusive, deep-diving cetacean species found in the North Pacific Ocean. Since Stejneger's beaked whale strandings data in Alaska through 1994 were last published, 35 additional strandings have been documented. Twenty-seven animals stranded in the Aleutian Islands, seven stranded in Southcentral Alaska, and one animal stranded on St. Lawrence Island. Twenty-two carcasses were necropsied, but only four were fresh. Seventeen of the 22 died during mass stranding events and cause of death could not be definitively determined. Barotrauma was suspected in three cases and infectious disease possibly complicated by barotrauma occurred in two cases. We documented an expansion of strandings into the northern Bering Sea, characterized a sex bias, examined stomach contents that included macroplastic, and identified parasites not previously associated with Stejneger's beaked whales. Also included are data on the largest known mass stranding of Stejneger's beaked whales, which occurred on Adak Island in 2018. The history, distribution, and findings presented here are central to further our understanding of this species.  相似文献

目的:探讨280例胃食管反流病(GERD)的分布特点及危险因素。方法:对临床诊断和胃镜确诊的280例GERD患者进行临床和风险因子相关性分析。结果:不论汉族还是维族,男性患者比例均明显高于女性;汉族患者高发年龄段早于维族患者(z=-2.939,P=0.003,);汉族和维族患者占反流性食管炎和Barrett食管比例分别为42.4%、81_3%及56.5%、18.8%,其中汉族患者Barrett食管比例较高(X2=14.358,P=0.000);肥胖、习惯性便秘、重体力活动者、饮食习惯不良在维族患者中的比例较高(P〈0.001)。结论:GERD与性别、年龄密切相关,男性多于女性,汉族患者发病年龄高峰旱于维族患者;汉族患者Barrett食管发生比例高于维族患者;肥胖、习惯性便秘、重体力活动、饮食习惯不良可能是GERD尤其是维族人群GERD的危险因素。  相似文献

Identification of subjects with a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) is fundamental for prevention of the disease. Consequently, it is essential to search for new biomarkers that can improve the prediction of T2D. The aim of this study was to examine whether 5 DNA methylation loci in blood DNA (ABCG1, PHOSPHO1, SOCS3, SREBF1, and TXNIP), recently reported to be associated with T2D, might predict future T2D in subjects from the Botnia prospective study. We also tested if these CpG sites exhibit altered DNA methylation in human pancreatic islets, liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle from diabetic vs. non-diabetic subjects. DNA methylation at the ABCG1 locus cg06500161 in blood DNA was associated with an increased risk for future T2D (OR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.02–1.16, P-value = 0.007, Q-value = 0.018), while DNA methylation at the PHOSPHO1 locus cg02650017 in blood DNA was associated with a decreased risk for future T2D (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.75–0.95, P-value = 0.006, Q-value = 0.018) after adjustment for age, gender, fasting glucose, and family relation. Furthermore, the level of DNA methylation at the ABCG1 locus cg06500161 in blood DNA correlated positively with BMI, HbA1c, fasting insulin, and triglyceride levels, and was increased in adipose tissue and blood from the diabetic twin among monozygotic twin pairs discordant for T2D. DNA methylation at the PHOSPHO1 locus cg02650017 in blood correlated positively with HDL levels, and was decreased in skeletal muscle from diabetic vs. non-diabetic monozygotic twins. DNA methylation of cg18181703 (SOCS3), cg11024682 (SREBF1), and cg19693031 (TXNIP) was not associated with future T2D risk in subjects from the Botnia prospective study.  相似文献

A 3 week enclosure experiment was carried out at the Gulf of Finland, the Baltic Sea. After additions of inorganic nutrients [nitrogen (N) + phosphorus (P)] and a carbon source (sucrose), we followed bacterial, viral and heterotrophic nanoflagellate (HNF) abundances, as well as bacterial production and the frequency of bacteria visibly infected with viruses. Furthermore, the decay rate of virus particles was measured three times during the enclosure experiment from the KCN-treated water samples. Bacterial mortality caused by viral lysis was estimated using the decay rates and the fraction of bacteria infected. Nutrient (N + P) additions stimulated phytoplankton growth [the chlorophyll (Chl) a concentration increased from <5 g l-1 up to 19 g l-1], while sucrose additions increased bacterial production (from 4-6 x 107 l-1 h-1). The phytoplankton blooms affected bacterial production only slightly. Bacterial mortality that was explained by viruses ranged from <2% to 13% when estimated from the visibly infected cells, and from 8% to 808% when the decay rates (range 0.052-0.765 h-1) were used. Assuming a clearance rate of 5 nl flagellate-1 h-1, the HNF community could graze 16-135% of total bacterial loss.   相似文献

We analyzed the ecological conditions that may favor a habitat selection process in which later arriving individuals (colonists) use the presence of earlier established species (residents) as a cue to profitable breeding sites (heterospecific attraction). In our model, colonists assessing potential breeding patches could select between high-quality source and low-quality sink patches. A proportion of the source patches were occupied by residents. Colonists could either directly sample the relative quality of the patches (termed samplers) or, alternatively, they could also use residents as a cue of patch quality (cue-users). Cue-users gained benefit from lowered costs when assessing occupied source patches. The cue-using strategy is an efficient way to choose the best possible patch not only when interspecific competition is intense, but also when benefits from social aggregation exceed the effects of competition. High relative cost of sampling empty patches increases the fitness of the cue-using strategy relative to samplers. The strongest attraction to heterospecifics was predicted when the benefit from aggregating with residents exceeded the effects of competition, and approximately half of the landscape consisted of occupied, high-quality source patches.  相似文献
