To evaluate whether the intermediate-disturbance hypothesis applies on regional scales, the relationship between the species diversity and gap formation regime of beech forests was examined. The mean gap size and the variation of gap sizes showed no correlation with species diversity. The mean windstorm interval varied widely, but geographical trends, such as latitudinal gradient, were not observed. However, locations that sustained an intermediate frequency of disturbance had the highest species diversity. Although a latitudinal gradient of disturbance was not apparent, the intermediate-disturbance hypothesis was partly supported on a geographic scale. The most predictable model for species diversity was a multiple regression model composed of two factors, the windstorm interval and the cumulative temperature of the growing season. The fact that the temperature was of greater importance than the disturbance interval indicates that the most important factor in predicting forest species diversity is the amount of available energy on a geographic scale.  相似文献

To elucidate the inhibitory action of acetogenins, we synthesized an acetogenin derivative which possesses tetraol in place of the tetrahydrofuran ring and examined its inhibitory activity against bovine heart mitochondrial complex I. Our results indicate that these hydroxy groups are an essential structural factor though it is not effective as bis-THF hydroxy groups combination.  相似文献

 Relationships between leaf or shoot size, number, and arrangement in response to light were investigated to test the hypothesis that these characteristics are linked. In order to test this hypothesis, the divergence in allometry and shoot dynamics in saplings of Japanese beech (Fagus crenata) obtained from four populations and having different leaf sizes were examined in a nursery under both full sun and shade conditions. Trees with different leaf sizes also showed large differences in canopy structure, particularly when shade-grown saplings were compared. The final leaf mass distributions of the large-leaf populations were conical or “bottom - heavy”, while those of the small-leaf populations were planar or “top - heavy”. The slope of the allometric relations between leaf mass and shoot and branch mass in small-leaved populations were steeper than those in large-leaf populations. The four populations were classified into two growth types: populations producing a few large leaf and shoot modules corresponded to “stem growth type”, and those producing many small leaf and shoot modules corresponded to “leaf growth type”. These kinds of intra-specific variation in architecture and growth of F. crenata trees may influence the structure and dynamics of forests in accordance with differences in competitive ability or sensitivity to disturbances such as windstorm. To assess the impact of Bombus terrestris invasion on the foraging efficiency of native Japanese bumblebees, consumption and acquisition of floral resources during foraging on flowers of native Japanese plant species were investigated using enclosures with three treatments: one with only B. terrestris (exotic), one with both B. terrestris and native Japanese bumblebee species (mixed), and one with only Japanese species (native), but with the bumblebee density held constant. Changes in the body mass of queens and the nest mass of colonies for two days did not significantly differ among four combinations of the species and treatment, B. terrestris in the exotic and mixed treatments and Japanese species in the mixed and native treatments. Thus, it is not clear that B. terrestris has higher foraging efficiency than native species and that B. terrestris individuals more negatively affect the foraging efficiency of native species than individuals of the native species themselves. The nectar standing crop of Cirsium kamtschaticum was smaller in the exotic treatment than in the mixed and native treatments. Quantification of annual carbon sequestration is very important in order to assess the function of forest ecosystems in combatting global climate change and the ecosystem responses to those changes. Annual cycling and budget of carbon in a forested basin was investigated to quantify the carbon sequestration of a cool-temperate deciduous forest ecosystem in the Horonai stream basin, Tomakomai Experimental Forest, northern Japan. Net ecosystem exchange, soil respiration, biomass increment, litterfall, soil-solution chemistry, and stream export were observed in the basin from 1999–2001 as a part of IGBP-TEMA project. We found that 258 g C m–2 year–1 was sequestered annually as net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in the forested basin. Discharge of carbon to the stream was 4 g C m–2 year–1 (about 2% of NEE) and consisted mainly of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). About 43% of net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was retained in the vegetation, while about 57% of NEP was sequestered in soil, suggesting that the movement of sequestered carbon from aboveground to belowground vegetation was an important process for net carbon accumulation in soil. The derived organic carbon from aboveground vegetation that moved to the soil mainly accumulated in the solid phase of the soil, with the result that the export of dissolved organic carbon to the stream was smaller than that of dissolved inorganic carbon. Our results indicated that the aboveground and belowground interaction of carbon fluxes was an important process for determining the rate and retention time of the carbon sequestration in a cool-temperate deciduous forest ecosystem in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, northern Japan.  相似文献

Mouse parthenotes result in embryonic death before 10 days of gestation, but parthenogenetic embryos (ng/fg PE) that contain haploid sets of genomes from nongrowing (ng) oocytes derived from newborn fetuses and fully grown (fg) oocytes derived from adults can develop into 13.5-day-old fetuses. This prolonged development is due to a lack of genomic imprinting in ng oocytes. Here, we show maternal genomes of oocytes derived from ng/fg PE are competent to support normal development. After 28 days of culture, the ovaries from ng/fg PE grew as well as the controls, forming vesicular follicles with follicular antrums. The oocytes collected from the developed follicles were the same size as those of the controls. To determine whether maternal primary imprinting had been established in the oocytes derived from ng/fg PE, we examined the DNA methylation status in differentially methylated regions of three imprinted genes, Igf2r, Lit1, and H19. The results showed that maternal-specific modifications were imposed in the oocytes derived from ng/fg PE. Further, to assess nuclear competence to support development, we constructed matured oocytes containing a haploid genome derived from ng/fg PE oocytes by serial nuclear transfer. After in vitro fertilization and culture and embryo transplantation into recipients, two live pups were obtained. One developed normally to a fertile adult. These results revealed that oocytes derived from ng/fg PE can be normally imprinted during oogenesis and acquire competence to participate in development as female genomes.  相似文献

The photosynthetic light acclimation of fully expanded leaves of tree seedlings in response to gap formation was studied with respect to anatomical and photosynthetic characteristics in a natural cool-temperate deciduous forest. Eight woody species of different functional groups were used; two species each from mid-successional canopy species (Kalopanax pictus and Magnolia obovata), from late-successional canopy species (Quercus crispula and Acer mono), from sub-canopy species (Acer japonicum and Fraxinus lanuginosa) and from vine species (Schizophragma hydrangeoides and Hydrangea petiolaris). The light-saturated rate of photosynthesis (P max) increased significantly after gap formation in six species other than vine species. Shade leaves of K. pictus, M. obovata and Q. crispula had vacant spaces along cell walls in mesophyll cells, where chloroplasts were absent. The vacant space was filled after the gap formation by increased chloroplast volume, which in turn increased P max. In two Acer species, an increase in the area of mesophyll cells facing the intercellular space enabled the leaves to increase P max after maturation. The two vine species did not significantly change their anatomical traits. Although the response and the mechanism of acclimation to light improvement varied from species to species, the increase in the area of chloroplast surface facing the intercellular space per unit leaf area accounted for most of the increase in P max, demonstrating the importance of leaf anatomy in increasing P max.  相似文献

Summary The adenylate cyclase activity in the theca folliculi of the mouse Graafian follicle was investigated using the electron microscopic cytochemistry. Deposits of reaction product are recognized on the plasma membrane of the fibroblast, theca cell and transitional cell from the fibroblast-like cell to the theca cell (partially or incompletely differentiated theca cell) after incubation with adenylyl-imidodiphosphate (AMP-PNP) as an effective substrate for adenylate cyclase. This fact indicates that these cells have the receptor on the plasma membrane, and the adenylate cyclase-cyclic AMP system is important for the steroid secretion or the collagen fiber production. It is difficult to clarify by this method the relationship between the adenylate cyclase activity and the functional differentiation of the theca cell.Supported by a grant from the Japanese Educational ministry  相似文献
