Changes in intrathoracic pressure produced by the various inspiratory intercostals are essentially additive, but the interaction between these muscles and the diaphragm remains uncertain. In the present study, this interaction was assessed by measuring the changes in airway opening (DeltaPao) or transpulmonary pressure (DeltaPtp) in vagotomized, phrenicotomized dogs during spontaneous inspiration (isolated intercostal contraction), during isolated rectangular or ramp stimulation of the peripheral ends of the transected C(5) phrenic nerve roots (isolated diaphragm contraction), and during spontaneous inspiration with superimposed phrenic nerve stimulation (combined diaphragm-intercostal contraction). With the endotracheal tube occluded at functional residual capacity, DeltaPao during combined diaphragm-intercostal contraction was nearly equal to the sum of the DeltaPao produced by the two muscle groups contracting individually. However, when the endotracheal tube was kept open, DeltaPtp during combined contraction was 123% of the sum of the individual DeltaPtp (P < 0.001). The increase in lung volume during combined contraction was also 109% of the sum of the individual volume increases (P < 0.02). Abdominal pressure during combined contraction was invariably lower than during isolated diaphragm contraction. It is concluded, therefore, that the canine diaphragm and intercostal muscles act synergistically during lung expansion and that this synergism is primarily due to the fact that the intercostal muscles reduce shortening of the diaphragm. When the lung is maintained at functional residual capacity, however, the synergism is obscured because the greater stiffness of the rib cage during diaphragm contraction enhances the DeltaPao produced by the isolated diaphragm and reduces the DeltaPao produced by the intercostal muscles.  相似文献

Historians and others have given attention to multiple independent discoveries because of their implications for the nature of scientific discovery in general. However, previously published lists of such discoveries include almost no examples from botany. That this has been a matter of oversight is shown by the presentation of 22 cases of multiple botanical discoveries, the circumstances of which are briefly described. These examples show a number of the same general characteristics as those in other fields of science. They range in importance from the broadly sweeping to the narrowly specific, and show various degrees of simultaneity. They illustrate the problems of interpretation involved in judging functional equivalence, identity of central message, and priority. The bearing of some of the examples on various theories of the cause of multiple discoveries is also discussed. It is concluded that multiple discoveries have probably occurred as frequently in botany as in other sciences, and they display the same characteristics and generate the same problems of interpretation.  相似文献

To examine the mechanical effects of the abdominal and triangularis sterni expiratory recruitment that occurs when anesthetized dogs are tilted head up, we measured both before and after cervical vagotomy the end-expiratory length of the costal and crural diaphragmatic segments and the end-expiratory lung volume (FRC) in eight spontaneously breathing animals during postural changes from supine (0 degree) to 80 degrees head up. Tilting the animals from 0 degree to 80 degrees head up in both conditions was associated with a gradual decrease in end-expiratory costal and crural diaphragmatic length and with a progressive increase in FRC. All these changes, however, were considerably larger (P less than 0.005 or less) postvagotomy when the expiratory muscles were no longer recruited with tilting. Alterations in the elastic properties of the lung could not account for the effects of vagotomy on the postural changes. We conclude therefore that 1) by contracting during expiration, the canine expiratory muscles minimize the shortening of the diaphragm and the increase in FRC that the action of gravity would otherwise introduce, and 2) the end-expiratory diaphragmatic length and FRC in upright dogs are thus actively determined. The present data also indicate that by relaxing at end expiration, the expiratory muscles make a substantial contribution to tidal volume in upright dogs; in the 80 degrees head-up posture, this contribution would amount to approximately 60% of tidal volume.  相似文献

Nuclear DNA was extracted from each of the eight species comprising the Drosophila melanogaster species subgroup. Southern hybridization of this DNA by using a molecular probe specific for the alpha-amylase coding region showed that the duplicated structure of the amylase locus, first found in D. melanogaster, is conserved among all species of the melanogaster subgroup. Evidence is also presented for the concerted evolution of the duplicated genes within each species. In addition, it is shown that the glucose repression of amylase gene expression, which has been extensively studied in D. melanogaster, is not confined to this species but occurs in all eight members of the species subgroup. Thus, both the duplicated gene structure and the glucose repression of Drosophila amylase gene activity are stable over extended periods of evolutionary time.   相似文献

Receptors for atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) have been demonstrated in renal mesangial cells as well as other cell types in the glomerulus. The biochemical basis for the effects of ANP on glomerular hemodynamics remains undefined. Using cultured rat glomerular mesangial cells, we demonstrated a concentration-dependent stimulation of cGMP production in intact cells, and of guanylate cyclase in membranes. Despite the presence of a guanylate cyclase response, ANP had no inhibitory effect on basal inositol trisphosphate production nor on basal cytosolic calcium. Arginine vasopressin stimulated IP3 production, caused a rise in cytosolic calcium as measured using the calcium-sensitive fluorescent probe Indo-1, and caused mesangial cell contraction. ANP caused a slight but significant enhancement of vasopressin-stimulated IP3 production, but had no effect on the cytosolic calcium response nor on the contractile response. 8-Bromo-cGMP likewise had no effect on the generation of the calcium signal. These results indicate that the effects of ANP on glomerular hemodynamics are not mediated by an alteration in the generation of the calcium signal in mesangial cells. In contrast, addition of calcium inhibited ANP stimulated guanylate cyclase activity.  相似文献

Triangularis sterni: a primary muscle of breathing in the dog   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The isolated action, pattern of neural activation, and mechanical contribution to eupnea of the triangularis sterni (transversus thoracis) muscle were studied in supine anesthetized dogs. Linear displacement transducers were used to measure the axial displacements of the ribs and sternum. Tetanic stimulation of the triangularis sterni in the apneic animal caused a marked caudal displacement of the ribs, a moderate cranial displacement of the sternum, and a decrease in lung volume. During quiet breathing, there was invariably a rhythmic activation of the muscle in phase with expiration that was independent of the presence or absence of activity in the abdominal and internal interosseous intercostal muscles. This phasic expiratory activity in the triangularis sterni was of large amplitude and caused the ribs to be more caudal and the sternum to be more cranial during the spontaneous expiratory pause than during relaxation. Additional studies on awake animals showed that rhythmic activation of the triangularis sterni occurs in all body positions and is not caused by anesthesia. These findings indicate that expiration in the dog is not a passive process and that the end-expiratory volume of the rib cage is not determined by an equilibrium of static forces alone. Rather, it is actively determined and maintained below its relaxation volume by contraction of the triangularis sterni throughout expiration. The use of this muscle is likely to facilitate inspiration by increasing the length of the parasternal intercostals and taking on a portion of their work.  相似文献

Effects of paralysis with pancuronium on chest wall statics in awake humans   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The influence of tonic inspiratory muscle activity on the relaxation characteristics of the chest wall, rib cage (RC), and abdominal wall (ABW) has been investigated in four highly trained subjects. Chest wall shape and volume were estimated with magnetometers. Pleural pressure (Pes) and abdominal pressure were measured with esophageal and gastric balloons, respectively. Subjects were seated reclining 30 degrees from upright, and respiratory muscle weakness was produced by pancuronium bromide until RC inspiratory capacity was decreased to 60% of control. Only minor changes were observed for Konno-Mead relaxation characteristics (RC vs. ABW) between control and paralysis. Similarly, although RC relaxation curves (RC vs. Pes) during paralysis were significantly different from control (P less than 0.05), the changes were small and not consistent. The differences between paralysis-induced changes in resting end-expiratory position of the chest wall and helium-dilution functional residual capacity (FRC) suggested changes in volume of blood within the chest wall. We conclude that 1) although tonic inspiratory activity of chest wall muscles exists, it does not significantly affect the chest wall relaxation characteristics in trained subjects; 2) submaximal paralysis produced by pancuronium bromide is likely to modify either spinal attitude or the distribution of blood between extremities and the thorax; these effects may account for the changes in FRC in other studies.  相似文献

To have some insight into the functional coupling between the parasternal intercostals (PS) and the diaphragm (DPM), we have examined the isometric contractile properties of bundles from canine PS and DPM muscles. Bundles of external (EXT) and internal (INT) interosseous intercostals were studied for comparison. In addition we have related sonometrically measured length of the intercostals in vivo at supine functional residual capacity (FRC) to in vitro optimal force-producing length (Lo). We found that 1) intercostal twitch speed is significantly faster than DPM, thus displacing their relative force-frequency curve to the right of that of the DPM; 2) the ascending limb of the active length-tension curve of all intercostals lies below the DPM curve; i.e., at 85% Lo, PS force is 46% of maximal force (Po), whereas DPM force is still 87% Po; 3) for any given length change beyond Lo, all intercostals generate greater passive tension than the DPM; 4) Po is greater for the intercostals than the DPM; and 5) at supine FRC, both EXT and INT in dogs are nearly operating at Lo, whereas the PS are operating at a length greater than Lo. We conclude that 1) PS produce less force than DPM during breathing efforts involving low- (10-20 Hz) stimulation frequencies, but they generate more force than DPM when high- (greater than 50 Hz) stimulation frequencies are required; and 2) the pressure-generating ability of the PS is better preserved than that of the DPM with increases in lung volume.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Abdominal muscle use during breathing in unanesthetized dogs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The pattern of abdominal muscle use during breathing in unanesthetized dogs is unknown. Therefore, we have recorded the electromyograms of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, and transversus abdominis in eight conscious animals breathing quietly in the sitting, standing, and prone postures. During quiet breathing in the sitting posture, all animals invariably had a large amount of phasic expiratory activity in the transversus abdominis. In contrast, only four animals showed some expiratory activity in the external oblique, and only one animal had expiratory activity in the rectus abdominis. A similar pattern was observed when the animals were standing or lying prone, although the amount of expiratory activity was less in this posture. Bilateral cervical vagotomy in four animals did not affect the degree of transversus abdominis expiratory activation or the influence of posture. We conclude that in conscious dogs 1) the abdominal muscles play an important role during breathing and make spontaneous quiet expiration a very active process, 2) the transversus abdominis is the primary respiratory muscle of the abdomen, and 3) unlike in anesthetized animals, extrapulmonary receptors play a major role in promoting abdominal expiratory contraction.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Three strains of Phytomonas serpens two from tomatoes, Lycopersicon esculentum one from the insect Phtia picta (Hemiptera, Coreidae), were cultivated in a chemically defined medium developed from a defined medium for cultivating insect flagellates. Besides organic growth factors required by other insect trypanosomatids this flagellate requires, serine and inositol. Glutamine stimulates growth, and, surprisingly, does not require heme.  相似文献
