Some plants in arctic and alpine habitats have heliotropic flowers that track the sun. This results in a heating of the flower's interior, which may improve the possibilities for insect pollination and seed production. Here, I examine whether flower heliotropism in an alpine population of the self-incompatible Ranunculus acris L. (Ranunculaceae) enhances pollinator visitation and seed production. Flowers of Ranunculus acris tracked the sun during the day. Tracking accuracy was greatest during the middle of the day. The temperature elevation in flowers was negatively correlated with the flower's angle of deviation from the sun. Despite the increased temperature, insects did not discriminate among flowers on the basis of their angle of deviation from the sun, or tend to stay longer in the flowers aligned closest towards the sun. A tethering experiment was conducted on three groups of plants flowering at different times in the 1993 season and on one group the following season. Manipulation plants were constrained not to track the sun, whereas control plants tracked the sun naturally. Solar tracking had no effect on seed:ovule ratio, seed mass, or abortion rate in any of the groups. There is probably a very narrow range of weather conditions (cold, sunny, and calm) where flower heliotropism may enhance visitation rate to flowers and their seed production.  相似文献

There have been few attempts to examine the relationship between mean seed production of populations and the environmental conditions experienced by these populations. This study uses redundancy, analysis (RDA) to explore which environmental factors influence the patterns of inter-population variation in mean seed production (seed:ovule ratio and seed weight) and mean plant height in 25 alpine populations of Ranunculus acris L at Finse, southwestern Norway. The mean seedrovule ratio and height of the plants differed more than three-fold among populations situated close to each other, whereas mean seed weight showed less variation. In two RDAs differences in site elevation and pH accounted for a substantial part of the among-population variation in mean plant height, seed:ovule ratio, and seed weight. Mean plant height and seed weight were negatively correlated with the altitude of the populations, whereas mean seed:ovule ratio showed a high positive correlation with pH. When pooling all data from the populations, simple linear regressions showed that seed weight was positively correlated with plant height, whereas plant height had little influence on seed:ovule ratio. Seed weight was positively correlated with the numbers of seeds that a flower produced. The results indicate that mean seediovule ratio of a population is influenced primarily by the pH-conditions at the site, whereas mean seed weight and plant height are more strongly influenced by altitude which largely reflects the climatic severity at the site. Inter-population variation in average reproductive success in R. acris at Finse appears to be determined by several environmental and intrinsic factors that interact in a complex fashion.  相似文献

The preference for certain floral phenotypes by flower visiting animals may fuel the evolution of floral traits because variation in flower visitation rates may lead to fitness variation within a population. Here, I examine the importance of flower size for pollinator visitation rate, seed set, and seed mass in two alpine populations of the insect-pollinated herb Ranunculus acris L. during two seasons. There was no pollen limitation of seed set or mass. Pollinators discriminated strongly against flowers experimentally reduced in size. Despite this, there were no signs of any significant impact of flower size on female reproductive success. The results show that although pollinators discriminate strongly among floral phenotypes, this may not always result in female fitness differences within a population because seed set or mass is not limited by pollen availability alone. Probably abiotic environmental constraints prevent plants with high pollinator visitation from capitalizing on the high pollen deposition.  相似文献

Differences among plant species in visitation rate and seed set within a community may be explained both by the species’ floral traits and the community context. Additionally, the importance of species’ floral traits vs. community context on visitation rate and seed set may vary among communities. In communities where the pollinator-to-flower ratio is low, floral traits may be more important than community context, as pollinators may have the opportunity to be choosier when visiting plant species. In this study we investigated whether species’ floral traits (flower shape, size and number, and flowering duration) and community context (conspecific and heterospecific flower density, and pollinator abundance) could explain among-species variation in visitation rate and seed set. For this, we used data on 47 plant species from two Norwegian plant communities differing in pollinator-to-flower ratio. Differences among species in visitation rate and seed set within a community could be explained by similar variables as those explaining visitation rate and seed set within species. As expected, we found floral traits to be more important than community context in the community with a lower pollinator-to-flower ratio; whereas in the community with a higher pollinator-to-flower ratio, community context played a bigger role. Our study gives significant insights into the relative importance of floral traits on species’ visitation rate and seed set, and contributes to our understanding of the role of the community context on the fitness of plant species.  相似文献

Pollen limitation through insufficient pollen deposition on stigmas caused by too infrequent pollinator visitation may influence the reproductive outcome of plants. In this study we investigated how pollinator visitation rate, the degree of pollen limitation, and flower longevity varied spatially among three sites at different altitudes within a population of the dwarf shrub Dryas octopetala L. in alpine southern Norway. Significant pollen limitation on seed set only occurred at the mid-elevation site, while seed set at the other sites appeared to be mainly resource limited, thus indicating a spatial variation in pollen limitation. There was no association between the spatial variation in the extent of pollen limitation and pollinator visitation rate to flowers. However, pollinator visitation rates were related to flower longevity of Dryas; sites with low visitation rates had long-lived flowers and vice versa. Thus, our results suggest within-population spatial co-variation between pollinator visitation rates, pollen limitation, and a developmental response to these factors, flower longevity.  相似文献

Whether invasion of introduced plant species may be aided by certain community properties is poorly understood for species-rich ecosystems, such as tropical montane forests. In Kenya, the non-native tree Fraxinus pennsylvanica has invaded degraded montane forests. We used generalized linear mixed models to examine the relative importance of different community properties to Fraxinus invasion after agricultural abandonment and in the secondary forest. Fraxinus invasion was positively related to plant community species diversity and the abundance of tree saplings, shrubs, ferns, and herbs in the abandoned fallows, but negatively related to the same community properties in the secondary forest. The number of Fraxinus recruits declined with declining propagule pressure in the fallows, but not in the secondary forest. Although adult and saplings of Fraxinus were positively related to community diversity in the fallows, Fraxinus appeared to decrease diversity in the secondary forest. These results show that the success of non-native species invasion and the effects of an invader on the resident community may depend both on properties and degree of disturbance of the community. Plant community diversity and evenness appeared to determine the invasion success by increasing invasibility of the abandoned fallows, but decreasing invasibility of the secondary forest. Our results from a tropical degraded forest emphasize the importance of including habitat characteristics when predicting both the potential of non-native plant invasion and effects of invasives on the particular community.  相似文献
