SOCIAL SELECTION AND THE EVOLUTION OF ANIMAL SIGNALS

Social selection is presented here as a parallel theory to sexual selection and is defined as a selective force that occurs when individuals change their own social behaviors, responding to signals sent by conspecifics in a way to influence the other individuals' fitness. I analyze the joint evolution of a social signal and behavioral responsiveness to the signal by a quantitative-genetic model. The equilibria of average phenotypes maintained by a balance of social selection and natural selection and their stability are examined for two alternative assumptions on behavioral responsiveness, neutral and adaptive. When behavioral responsiveness is neutral on fitness, a rapid evolution by runaway selection occurs only with enough genetic covariance between the signal and responsiveness. The condition for rapid evolution also depends on natural selection and the number of interacting individuals. When signals convey some information on signalers (e.g., fighting ability), behavioral responsiveness is adaptive such that a receiver's fitness is also influenced by the signal. Here there is a single point of equilibrium. The equilibrium point and its stability do not depend on the genetic correlation. The condition needed for evolution is that the signal is beneficial for receivers, which results from reliability of the signal. Frequency-dependent selection on responsiveness has almost no influence on the equilibrium and the rate of evolution.

Proteolytic Activity against Model Peptides of the Cell Wall Lytic Enzyme from Chlamydomonas

A cell wall lytic enzyme (gamete wall-autolysin) from Chlamydomonasreinhardtii specifically cleaved several synthetic model peptides,-neo-endorphin, dynorphin (1–13), neurotensin and mastoparan,at the peptide bonds between consecutive hydrophobic amino-acidresidues. The cleavage was not significantly affected by high-saltconditions which are known to inhibit digestion of the cellwall. (Received December 14, 1989; Accepted April 5, 1990)     

Nitric Oxide Induces Phytoalexin Accumulation in Potato Tuber Tissues

We investigated whether nitric oxide (NO) radical could inducephytoalexin production. Treatment of potato tuber tissues with1-hydroxy-2-oxo-3,3-bis(2-aminoethyl)-1-triazene (NOC-18), anNO-releasing compound, induced the accumulation of the potatophytoalexin rishitin. This induction was inhibited by carboxy-2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide(carboxy-PTIO), an NO-specific scavenger, or by Tiron, a radicalscavenger, suggesting a phytoalexin inducing activity for NO. Efficient production of IGG human monoclonal antibodies by lymphocytes stimulated by lipopolysaccharide,pokeweed mitogen,and interleukin 4

Summary Extensive screening of the mitogens lipopolysaccharide (LPS), pokeweed mitogen (PWM), andStaphylococcus aureus Cowan I (SAC I), alone and in combination and with and without interleukin (IL) was performed forin vitro activation of regional lymph node lymphocytes from lung cancer patients for the production of human IgG, IgM, and IgA. As assessed by electrofusion of the lymphocytes following their exposure to these agents with mouse myeloma cells and incubation of the fused hybridoma, a remarkable stimulatory effect was shown by LPS and particularly by LPS plus IL-4, which was substantially greater than that of either SAC I or PWM with or without various IL. Optimization studies indicated that the addition of PWM to LPS and IL-4 in the culture medium further stimulated the human antibody (Ab) production, and that the optimal formulation for stimulations of human IgG production was a culture medium containing 20 μg/ml of LPS, 1/500 of PWM, and 100 u/ml of IL-4.     

A stereocontrolled synthetic approach to glycopeptides corresponding to the carbohydrate-protein linkage region of cell-surface proteoglycans

), carrying the core structure of serine-linked cell-surface proteoglycans were synthesized in a stereocontrolled manner. The carbohydrate key imidate xylosyl donors 3 and glycotetraosyl donors 4 and 5, as well as a tetrapeptide glycosyl acceptor 6, were coupled in the crucial glycosylation step. In these reactions, the application of either trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) or borontrifluoride etherate (BF₃-Et₂O) as catalysts proved to be highly efficient. The serine linked glycopeptides 34, 36 and 37 thus obtained yielded target compounds 1 and 2 on complete deprotection.     

Tuberculous thyroiditis and miliary tuberculosis manifested postpartum in a patient with thyroid carcinoma

Right nodular goiter with diffuse miliary shadow on chest roentgenogram was found in a postpartum febrile woman. Transbronchial lung biopsy revealed tuberculous granuloma and acid-fast bacilli were found by aspiration cytology of the thyroid. Although chemotherapy was effective, the thyroid nodule remained palpable and the serum thyroglobulin level remained high. Subtotal thyroidectomy revealed papillary carcinoma associated with tuberculosis and lymph nodes metastasis. This seems to be the first case report of a patient with tuberculous thyroiditis, coexisting with thyroid carcinoma, diagnosed by aspiration cytology and treated prior to surgery.
