Prostaglandin (PGE2 and PGI2) synthesis was determined in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of 19 hypoxic neonates at the age of 5-96 hours by using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method. Control group consisted of 8 children of the same age whose samples were taken due to initial suspicion of neonatal meningitis. The prostaglandin concentrations in CSF were correlated with initial hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) stage and neurological findings of patients at the age of 12 months. The values of PGE2 and PGI2 in the CSF of children with perinatal hypoxia (PNH) were significantly higher than in the children from the control group. The values of PGI2 in serum were significantly higher than in "CSF" of patients with PNH. Although average values of PGE2 and PGI2 in the liquor were higher in children with advanced stage of HIE, the differences between different stages were not statistically significant. We did not find any significant correlation between average concentrations ofprostaglandins and neurological findings of the 12-month-old children.  相似文献

Etiology of otitis media with effusion (OME) is still unclear and often described as multi-factorial. It is very usual finding in cleft palate population. We tested relationship between the hearing level, audiometric frequencies, aging and ear side in unilateral cleft lip and palate 101 children (UCLP) and subgroups of left (UCLP)(L) and right cleft side (UCLP)(R). Group of left ears is prone to higher frequency and more severe hearing disturbances than groups of right ears, with less chance of normalizing hearing level with aging. Characteristics of hearing loss level and its improvement, in UCLP children depend of cleft type, ear side and age group.  相似文献

Aims

Data on the variability of hyperaccumulation potential of the facultative serpentinophytes Noccaea kovatsii and N. praecox on different geological substrates are scarce. The aim of this study was to assess the accumulation potential of these two species from ultramafic and non-ultramafic substrates, with special emphasis on the hyperaccumulation of Ni, Zn and Cd.

Methods

Samples of plants and corresponding soils were collected from 16 sites covering a wide range of geochemistry. Elemental concentrations were determined in the roots, shoots and the rhizosphere soils. The pH, particle size distribution and content of organic matter were also determined in the soil samples.

Results

All ultramafic accessions of both species hyperaccumulated Ni with high intraspecific variability. Only one accession of N. kovatsii from a schist soil hyperaccumulated Zn, with also a high Cd accumulation. Accumulation and translocation of Ni in both species were much higher in the ultramafic accessions, whereas Zn accumulation and translocation was found in both ultramafic and non-ultramafic accessions.

Conclusions

Ni accumulation and translocation was restricted to ultramafic populations of both species, whereas it is a species-wide trait for Zn. This study provides new and comprehensive information on the natural variation of hyperaccumulation of Ni, Zn and Cd in N. kovatsii and N. praecox.

Primary malignant schwannoma of the small and large intestine is an extremely rare disease. Therefore, we are going to report an aggressive multifocal malignant intestinal schwannoma in a 66-year old female patient, that was primarily diagnosed as the gynecological tumor that, even after the surgical treatment, had a very quickly recurrence. Small intestine tumors may show images similar to an adnexal tumor, so it is difficult to differentiate one from another prior to the surgery. The patient did not suffer from neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1), disease that increases occurrence of malignant schwannoma in comparison with general population. These tumors are often diagnosed late, and radical surgical intervention does not guarantee longer survival. After surgical removal of macroscopically visible tumor masses from this patient, tumor formation within one month after the operation had reached the sizes of 83x66 mm and 85x75 mm respectively, with the occurrence of metastases in the liver, and thereafter the patient died. In differential diagnosis of adnexal tumor small intestine tumor has to be considered, especially if nonspecific symptoms are present.  相似文献

Contaminants, like pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, and metals, are persistent and ubiquitous and are known to threaten the environment. Traditionally, scientists have considered the direct physiological risks that these contaminants pose. However, scientists have just begun to integrate ethology and toxicology to investigate the effects that contaminants have on behavior. This review considers the potential for contaminant effects on mating behavior. Here, we assess the growing body of research concerning disruptions in sexual differentiation, courtship, sexual receptivity, arousal, and mating. We discuss the implications of these disruptions on conservation efforts and highlight the importance of recognizing the potential for environmental stressors to affect behavioral experimentation. More specifically, we consider the negative implications for anthropogenic contaminants to affect the immediate behavior of animals and their potential to have cascading and/or long-term effects on the behavioral ecology and evolution of populations. Overall, we aim to raise awareness of the confounding influence that contaminants can have and promote caution when interpreting results where the potential for cryptic effects are possible.  相似文献
