Two methods are described for calculating the value of the exponentx in the equation flow =k×diameter x , as pertaining to a branch of the bronchial tree. In the lungs from three humans, two dogs, one hamster, and one rat mean values ofx between 2.419 and 2.903 were found. They lie within the range of 2.333 to 3.0 predicted by the analysis of Uylings (Bull. Math. Biol. 39, 501–519, 1977).  相似文献

Left pneumonectomy or left nephrectomy was performed on 10-wk-old littermate male New Zealand White rabbits, and they were killed at 30 wk of age. Thirty-week-old male littermates served as controls. Nephrectomy was done to produce major tissue loss and trauma and to assess blood somatomedin C. At the end of the experiment, the right lungs of the pneumonectomy animals had a greater lung volume, weight, gas-exchanging surface area, and alveolar number than the nephrectomy animals and the controls, and their air spaces were the same size. When compared with both lungs of the nephrectomy group and the controls, lung weight was the same; lung volume, alveolar number, and protein were not significantly less in the pneumonectomy group, but gas-exchanging area (compared with controls only), DNA, and RNA were. After left nephrectomy, the right kidney increased in weight; nephrectomy had no effect on lung size or structure. We conclude that pneumonectomy at age 10 wk in male rabbits results in significant compensatory lung growth, including alveolar multiplication, and this persists to age 30 wk. Compensatory lung growth, however, was incomplete; that is, it did not reconstitute (equal) in all respects that of both lungs of the nephrectomy animals or the controls.  相似文献

The incidence of asbestos bodies in the lungs of adult patients selected at random, who died in four Montreal hospitals, was studied by examining fresh unstained smears of lungs obtained at necropsy. Two techniques were used for preparation of the smears and an arbitrary grading system was developed to estimate the degree of contamination of the lungs by asbestos bodies.Asbestos bodies were present in 48 out of 100 necropsies; they were found in 32 of 56 men (57%) and in 16 of 44 women (34%). Men were more heavily contaminated. The proportion of positive smears depended on the technique used and the amount of lung sampled. No particular association was noted between asbestos bodies in the lungs and the presence of cancer in the 33 patients in this series with malignant disease. The high incidence in this random series suggests that asbestos is a significant air contaminant in Montreal.  相似文献

The effect of age on lung structure in male BALB/cNNia inbred mice   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Morphometric examination using light, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy was performed on the lungs from 32 inbred male BALB/ cNNia mice between 38 days and 28 months of age. Between 38 days and 9 months of age the changes were primarily those of growth. Alveolar multiplication and total elastic-fiber length appeared complete by 38 days of age. The major increase in the number of interalveolar pores occurred by 68 days, but there was a significant further increase from 68 days to 9 months of age. At 9 months, approximately 10% of the alveolar wall was formed by pores. Alveolar ducts, the cylindrical core of air central to alveolar mouths, increased more in diameter than length. Between 9 and 28 months the changes were attributed to aging and were different from those reported in humans and other species. Lung volume, alveolar surface area, and total volume of alveolar wall increased with age; there was no change in mean linear intercept and volume proportion of alveolar and alveolar duct air. Total area of pores increased with age, but their number and area fraction of the alveolar wall did not change. No transmission electron microscopic changes were seen in the alveolar walls. We speculate that the morphometric differences between our animals and those studied in other reports may reflect the fact that our animals were specific-pathogen-free animals and kept under protected circumstances.  相似文献
