Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is widely used as gasoline oxygenate and octane number enhancer for more complete combustion
in order to reduce the air pollution caused by motor vehicle exhaust. The possible adverse effects of MTBE on human health
are of major public concern. However, information on the metabolism of MTBE in human tissues is scarce. The present study
demonstrates that human cytochrome P450 2A6 is able to metabolize MTBE to tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), a major circulating metabolite
and marker for exposure to MTBE. As CYP2A6 is known to be constitutively expressed in human livers, we infer that it may play

Pretreatment and densification of agricultural residues at regional depots can simplify feedstock supply logistics for the production of biofuels in commercial biorefineries. We have previously reported the performance of a laboratory-scale (5 L) packed-bed ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX) reactor system, which showed significant promise for biomass pretreatment at distributed depots. In this paper, we describe the performance of a 90-fold larger pilot-scale packed-bed AFEX-reactor system, used to produce over 1,500 batches (~36 tons) of pretreated crop residues over a 5-year period. Virtually all unreacted ammonia was successfully removed from the biomass, and 76% of the ammonia was recycled and reused. Pretreatment performance at pilot scale was comparable to laboratory-scale, averaging 74% glucose and 75% xylose yield in a standard test compared with 71% and 73%, respectively. Low temperature and long residence time pretreatments have been proposed as an alternative to conventional pretreatments within a centralized biorefinery, allowing for a decentralized pretreatment without high energy costs. Ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX?) pretreatment may be uniquely suitable for decentralized pretreatment, and this study considers the possibility of decreasing the temperature in AFEX pretreatment of corn stover. AFEX pretreatment at 40°C and 8?h produced comparable sugar and ethanol yields as conventional AFEX pretreatment at high temperatures and short residence time during subsequent hydrolysis and fermentation. Increasing the ammonia loading at these temperatures tends to increase digestibility, although the moisture content of the reaction has little effect. This study suggests a greater flexibility in AFEX pretreatment conditions than previously thought, allowing for an alternative approach for decentralized facilities if the economic conditions are appropriate. 相似文献
