Isolation of albumin from whole human plasma and fractionation of albumin-depleted plasma.

The dye Cibacron Blue F-3-GA was conjugated to Sepharose to provide an affinity column for serum albumin. Passage of whole human plasma through a column of Cibacron Blue-Sepharose results in the removal of approx. 98% of the albumin. The latter can be quantitatively recovered by desorption with NaSCN. Albumin-depleted plasma can be readily resolved into discrete fractions by a combination of conventional biochemical techniques. In particular, the resolution of plasma proteins with properties similar to those of native human plasma albumin can readily be accomplished by ion-exchange chromatography of the Sepharose-dye-treated plasma on DEAE-cellulose.     

Revisiting Jablonski (1993): cladogenesis and range expansion explain latitudinal variation in taxonomic richness

The increase in diversity towards the equator arises from latitudinal variation in rates of cladogenesis, extinction, immigration and/or emigration of taxa. We tested the relative contribution of all four processes to the latitudinal gradient in 26 marine invertebrate orders with extensive fossil records, examined previously by David Jablonski. Coupling Jablonski's estimates of latitudinal variation in cladogenesis with new data on patterns of extinction and current distributions, we show that the present-day gradient in diversity is caused by higher rates of cladogenesis and subsequent range expansion (immigration) at lower latitudes. In contrast, extinction and emigration were not important in the creation of the latitudinal gradient in ordinal richness. This work represents one of the first simultaneous tests of the role of all four processes in the creation of the latitudinal gradient in taxonomic richness, and suggests that low tropical extinction rates are not essential to the creation of latitudinal diversity gradients.     

Does biology underlie the oldest profession? Prostitution and sex disparities in john behavior

This study considers a biosocial explanation of why johns, the purchasers of commercial sex exchanges, are almost exclusively male. Trivers's theory of parental investment and sexual selection predicts that differential parental investment by biological sex will lead to divergent sex-based reproductive instincts. The sex bearing the larger parental investment will tend to be choosier whereas the sex bearing the lesser investment will tend to be relatively indiscriminate and competitive for access to sexual resources. We hypothesized that men are more likely than women to offer objects of value in exchange for access to sexual resources. Using self-reports of sex-purchasing from Add Health data (N = 14,544), we found that maleness was a robust predictor of john behavior even after controlling for well-known criminogenic risk factors.
