Hot-dip galvanization is a zinc-coating process to protect the metal items from corrosion. Zinc oxide nanoaerosol fume rising from hot metal bath surface in nano dimensions contains the greatest risk for workers in galvanization process. In the present study, it was evaluated whether inhalation of zinc causes any alteration in cellular immunity and tryptophan degradation by measuring neopterin, tryptophan, kynurenine, and zinc levels in 63 male galvanization workers and 23 male office personnel as controls. Serum and urinary zinc levels were found as 14.90?±?0.90 and 102?±?4.7 μg/dL in workers while 12.87?±?1.45 and 75?±?4.2 μg/dL in controls, respectively (both, p?<?0.05). Similarly, the mean urinary neopterin levels and serum neopterin and kynurenine levels were found to be statistically higher in galvanization workers than the controls (all, p?<?0.05). Significant correlations were found between urinary neopterin levels and kynurenine to tryptophan ratio or serum zinc levels. The results indicated cellular immune activation by occupational zinc exposure. It was estimated that neopterin, in parallel with kynurenine pathway, could reflect occupational exposure to zinc nanoaerosols and might be useful in early diagnosis of immune alterations due to nano-scale exposures. 相似文献

subchronic exposure to the metal leads to behavioral and neurophysiological changes in both treated and control groups. Each
of the groups consisted of 10 animals. Aluminum chloride (AlCl3) at a low (50 mg/kg/d) or high (200 mg/kg/d) dose was applied to male Wistar rats by gavage for 8 wk. Al-free water by gavage
was given to the control group throughout the experiment. Behavioral effects were evaluated by open-field (OF) motor activity
and by acoustic startle response (ASR). Electrophysiological examination was done by recording spontaneous activity and sensory-evoked
potentials from the visual, somatosensory, as well as auditory cortex. The Al content of each whole brain was determined by
electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Subchronic Al exposure slightly caused some changes in the evoked potentials
and electrocorticograms and in the OF and ASR performance, but these results were not statistically significant. The brain
Al levels of the control and the low and high dose of Al-exposed groups were measured as 0.717±0.208 μg/g (wet weight), 0.963±0.491

Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) is a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, and edema. Because it typically results in end-stage kidney disease, the steroid-resistant subtype (SRNS) of INS is especially important when it occurs in children. The present study included 29 affected and 22 normal individuals from 17 SRNS families; genome-wide analysis was performed with Affymetrix 250K SNP arrays followed by homozygosity mapping. A large homozygous stretch on chromosomal region 12p12 was identified in one consanguineous family with two affected siblings. Direct sequencing of protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type O (PTPRO; also known as glomerular epithelial protein-1 [GLEPP1]) showed homozygous c.2627+1G>T donor splice-site mutation. This mutation causes skipping of the evolutionarily conserved exon 16 (p.Glu854_Trp876del) at the RNA level. Immunohistochemistry with GLEPP1 antibody showed a similar staining pattern in the podocytes of the diseased and control kidney tissues. We used a highly polymorphic intragenic DNA marker-D12S1303-to search for homozygosity in 120 Turkish and 13 non-Turkish individuals in the PodoNet registry. This analysis yielded 17 candidate families, and a distinct homozygous c.2745+1G>A donor splice-site mutation in PTPRO was further identified via DNA sequencing in a second Turkish family. This mutation causes skipping of exon 19, and this introduces a premature stop codon at the very beginning of exon 20 (p.Asn888Lysfs*3) and causes degradation of mRNA via nonsense-mediated decay. Immunohistochemical analysis showed complete absence of immunoreactive PTPRO. Ultrastructural alterations, such as diffuse foot process fusion and extensive microvillus transformation of podocytes, were observed via electron microscopy in both families. Background
Massive localized lymphedema (MLL) is a non-neoplastic benign soft tissue lesion that may be confused with sarcomas or other neoplastic proliferations both clinically and morphologically. Most occur in morbidly obese adults on the lower extremities. The objective of this article is to document a case of MLL in the retroperitoneal cavity which is a previously unreported site for this lesion, and to highlight its unusual clinical features.Case presentation
The patient was a non-obese male who had undergone major abdominal surgery due to bladder extrophy 17?years ago. Abdominal ultrasonography detected a large incidental mass in the right renal sinus during his investigation for nephrolithiasis. The lesion extending from renal pelvis down to pelvis was resected and its histopathological findings were compatible with massive localized lymphedema.Conclusions
Retroperitoneum has to be added to the list of locations that MLL can be found. Liposarcoma will be a challenging differential diagnosis when the lesion is encountered in an unusual site.6.

Oxidative stress occurs during maximal exercise, perhaps as a result of increased consumption of oxygen. Vitamins C and E can overcome the effects of antioxidants in exercise. We investigated the effects of supplementation with a combination of vitamin C and E (VCE) on blood lipid peroxidation (LP) and antioxidant levels following maximal training in basketball players. Blood samples were taken from 14 players (group A) and divided into two subgroups namely maximal training (group B) and maximal training plus VCE groups (group C). Group B maximally exercised for 35 days. VCE was supplemented to group C for 35 days and blood samples were taken from group B and C. Plasma and hemolyzed erythrocyte samples were obtained from the players. Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) activity and plasma vitamin E concentration were lower in group B than in group A, whereas plasma and erythrocyte LP levels were higher in group B than in group A. Plasma vitamin A, vitamin E, erythrocyte GSH‐Px, and reduced glutathione (GSH) values were higher in group C than in groups A and B although LP levels in plasma and erythrocytes were lower in group C than in group A and B. β‐Carotene values did not change in the three groups. In conclusion, VCE supplementation in maximal exercising basketball players may strengthen the antioxidant defense system by decreasing reactive oxygen species (ROS). Occupational and environmental aluminum (Al) exposure cause serious health problems by interaction with biological systems.
Al is one of the most documented metals because its cellular targets are unclear biochemical processes and membranes of organisms.
The major aim of the present study was to investigate the alteration of serum and urine aluminum in occupational exposure
and to observe whether the metal exposure could cause any changes in pteridine-pathway-related critical compounds such as
urinary neopterin and biopterin and blood dihydropteridine reductase (DHPR). In this study, determination of the metal concentrations
was carried out in Al-exposed workers (n=23) and healthy volunteers (n=18) by using a tomic absorption spectrometer. DHPR enzyme activity and levels of neopterin and biopterin were detected by
spectrophotometric and high-performance liquid chromatographic methods, respectively. It was found that occupational exposure
to the metal led to a statistically significant increase in serum Al levels compared to the controls (p<0.05). At the same time, urinary neopterin and biopterin concentrations of the exposed group were higher than nonexposed
subjects (both p<0.05). The correlations among Al levels and DHPR activity, magnesium concentration in serum and urine, working years, smoking

Analysis of genetic relationships among Rosa damascena plants grown in Turkey by using AFLP and microsatellite markers 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Rosa damascena Mill. is the most important rose species for rose oil production. The main rose oil producers in the world are Turkey and Bulgaria and they obtain the rose oil almost exclusively from R. damascena. In spite of coming from the same original populations, R. damascena plants grown in Turkey show some morphological differences. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the genetic relationships among R. damascena plants grown in Turkey by using microsatellite and AFLP markers. Twenty three AFLP and nine microsatellite primer pairs were used for this aim. No polymorphism could be detected among the plants, as the marker patterns obtained from different plants are identical. The conclusion from these data is that all R. damascena plants under study are derived from the same original genotype by vegetative propagation. Furthermore, the observed morphological differences originate from point mutations not detectable by molecular markers. Therefore, they are equivalent to sport mutations frequently observed in cut and garden rose varieties. 相似文献
