Successful biological control of mites is possible under various conditions, and identifying what are the requirements for robust control poses a challenge because interacting factors are involved. Process-based modeling can help to explore these interactions and identify under which conditions biological control is likely, and when not. Here, we present a process-based model for population interactions between the phytophagous mite, Tetranychus urticae, and its predator, Typhlodromus pyri, on apple trees. Temperature and leaf nitrogen concentration influence T. urticae rates of development and reproduction, while temperature and rate of ingestion of prey and pollen influence T. pyri rates of survival and reproduction. Predator and prey population dynamics are linked through a stage structured functional response model that accounts for spatial heterogeneity in population density throughout the trees. T. urticae biomass-days (BMD’s), which account for sizes of larvae, nymphs and adults, indicate level of mite-induced leaf damage. When BMD’s exceed 290 per leaf, there are economic losses. When BMD’s exceed 350 per leaf, T. urticae population growth is curbed and eventually the population decreases. Simulations were run to determine which conditions would lead to current year economic loss and increased risk of loss in the following year, i.e. where more T. urticae than T. pyri are present at the end of September. Risk was high with one or more of the following initial conditions: a high prey: predator ratio (10:1 or more); a low to intermediate (0.04–0.2 T. urticae per leaf) initial density; T. urticae with a higher initial proportion of adult females than T. pyri; and a delayed first detection of mites, whether in late July, or sometimes in late June, but not in early June. Warm summer weather, higher leaf nitrogen and T. urticae immigration into trees were also risk factors. Causes for these patterns based on biological characteristics of T. urticae and T. pyri are discussed, as are counter measures which can be taken to reduce risk. 相似文献

Tinnitus is one of the most common diseases in industrialized countries. Here, we developed and evaluated a short-term (5 subsequent days) and intensive (6 hours/day) tailor-made notched music training (TMNMT) for patients suffering from chronic, tonal tinnitus. We evaluated (i) the TMNMT efficacy in terms of behavioral and magnetoencephalographic outcome measures for two matched patient groups with either low (≤8 kHz, N = 10) or high (>8 kHz, N = 10) tinnitus frequencies, and the (ii) persistency of the TMNMT effects over the course of a four weeks post-training phase. The results indicated that the short-term intensive TMNMT took effect in patients with tinnitus frequencies ≤8 kHz: subjective tinnitus loudness, tinnitus-related distress, and tinnitus-related auditory cortex evoked activity were significantly reduced after TMNMT completion. However, in the patients with tinnitus frequencies >8 kHz, significant changes were not observed. Interpreted in their entirety, the results also indicated that the induced changes in auditory cortex evoked neuronal activity and tinnitus loudness were not persistent, encouraging the application of the TMNMT as a longer-term training. The findings are essential in guiding the intended transfer of this neuro-scientific treatment approach into routine clinical practice. 相似文献

Characterization of disease models of neurodegenerative disorders requires a systematic and comprehensive phenotyping in a highly standardized manner. Therefore, automated high-resolution behavior test systems such as the homecage based LabMaster system are of particular interest. We demonstrate the power of the automated LabMaster system by discovering previously unrecognized features of a recently characterized atxn3 mutant mouse model. This model provided neurological symptoms including gait ataxia, tremor, weight loss and premature death at the age of 12 months usually detectable just 2 weeks before the mice died. Moreover, using the LabMaster system we were able to detect hypoactivity in presymptomatic mutant mice in the dark as well as light phase.Additionally,we analyzed inflammation, immunological and hematological parameters, which indicated a reduced immune defense in phenotypic mice. Here we demonstrate that a detailed characterization even of organ systems that are usually not affected in SCA3 is important for further studies of pathogenesis and required for the preclinical therapeutic studies. 相似文献

Cytogeographical variability within the Phleum pratense group in the Carpathians and adjacent part of Pannonian lowland, based on 132 populations analysed by flow cytometry, is described. Only diploid and hexaploid plants were detected among 635 samples from the studied area. Diploids were found to be less frequent (127 plants, 20%) than hexaploids (508, 80%). With the exception of the single pure diploid population, diploids always co-occured with hexaploids (30 localities, 22.7%). The majority of populations (101, 76.5%) consisted of hexaploid plants. Most mixed populations occur in the Western Carpathians (26). In the Eastern Carpathians, mixed populations are much rarer, with three populations in Ukraine and one in Romania. In the Southern Carpathians, only hexaploids occur. The conventional taxonomic concept of the two species, diploid P. bertolonii and hexaploid P. pratense , was followed in spite of their sympatric occurence. Distribution maps based on chromosome number data from previous studies and on ploidy level estimates are given for both species in the studied area. The pattern of different distribution of the two taxa within the Carpathians is discussed. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 475–485. 相似文献

Gelatinases A and B, which are members of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, play essential roles in cancer development and metastasis, as they can break down basal membranes. Therefore, the determination and inhibition of gelatinases is essential for cancer treatment. Peptides that can specifically block each gelatinase may, therefore, be useful for cancer treatment. In this study, subtractive panning was carried out using a 12-mer peptide library to identify peptides that block gelatinase A activity (MMP-2), which is a key pharmacological target. Using this method, 17 unique peptide sequences were determined. MMP-2 inhibition by these peptides was evaluated through zymogram analyses, which revealed that four peptides inhibited MMP-2 activity by at least 65%. These four peptides were synthesized and used for in vitro wound healing using human umbilical vein endothelial cells, and two peptides, AOMP12 and AOMP29, were found to inhibit wound healing by 40%. These peptides are, thus, potential candidates for MMP-2 inhibition for cancer treatment. Furthermore, our findings suggest that our substractive biopanning screening method is a suitable strategy for identifying peptides that selectively inhibit MMP-2. 相似文献

Autophagy and DNA repair are two essential biological mechanisms that maintain cellular homeostasis. Impairment of these mechanisms was associated with several pathologies such as premature aging, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Intrinsic or extrinsic stress stimuli (e.g., reactive oxygen species or ionizing radiation) cause DNA damage. As a biological stress response, autophagy is activated following insults that threaten DNA integrity. Hence, in collaboration with DNA damage repair and response mechanisms, autophagy contributes to the maintenance of genomic stability and integrity. Yet, connections and interactions between these two systems are not fully understood. In this review article, current status of the associations and crosstalk between autophagy and DNA repair systems is documented and discussed. 相似文献

Background
Botulism is a rare disease caused by intoxication leading to muscle weakness and rapidly progressive dysphagia. With adequate therapy signs of recovery can be observed within several days. In the last few years, brain imaging studies carried out in healthy subjects showed activation of the sensorimotor cortex and the insula during volitional swallowing. However, little is known about cortical changes and compensation mechanisms accompanying swallowing pathology. 相似文献10.
