Background

Recent neuroimaging studies have revealed that putatively unimodal regions of visual cortex can be activated during auditory tasks in sighted as well as in blind subjects. However, the task determinants and functional significance of auditory occipital activations (AOAs) remains unclear.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We examined AOAs in an intermodal selective attention task to distinguish whether they were stimulus-bound or recruited by higher-level cognitive operations associated with auditory attention. Cortical surface mapping showed that auditory occipital activations were localized to retinotopic visual cortex subserving the far peripheral visual field. AOAs depended strictly on the sustained engagement of auditory attention and were enhanced in more difficult listening conditions. In contrast, unattended sounds produced no AOAs regardless of their intensity, spatial location, or frequency.

Conclusions/Significance

Auditory attention, but not passive exposure to sounds, routinely activated peripheral regions of visual cortex when subjects attended to sound sources outside the visual field. Functional connections between auditory cortex and visual cortex subserving the peripheral visual field appear to underlie the generation of AOAs, which may reflect the priming of visual regions to process soon-to-appear objects associated with unseen sound sources.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen fertilization on the phytomass production, shoot length and leaf secondary phenolics in nine Salix myrsinifolia clones was investigated. Cuttings taken from 1-year-old and 2-year-old shoot parts of field cultivated clones were grown at three concentrations of nitrogen (7, 150 and 300 ppm) in a greenhouse for one growing season. The willow clones differed significantly in phytomass yield and secondary phenolics content. Nitrogen fertilization affected significantly the growth and secondary metabolism of willow clones. In most clones, the addition of nitrogen from a sub-optimum concentration (7 ppm) to an optimum concentration (150 ppm) appeared to reduce the amounts of salicortin, chlorogenic acid and unknown salicylate and increased shoot phytomass, but a supraoptimum nitrogen concentration (300 ppm) resulted in highly variable growth and secondary phenolic responses. A significantly negative correlation between leaf phytomass and amount of total phenolics at sub-optimum and optimum N-treatments indicates trade-off between growth and secondary metabolism in willow clones at these treatments. However, the leaf phytomass:total amount of phenolics ratio varied significantly among clones, and in all clones it was not significantly lower at sub-optimum N-treatment than at optimum N-treatment.  相似文献

Fertile transgenic barley by particle bombardment of immature embryos   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Transgenic, fertile barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) from the Finnish elite cultivar Kymppi was obtained by particle bombardment of immature embryos. Immature embryos were bombarded to the embryonic axis side and grown to plants without selection. Neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPTII) activity was screened in small plantlets. One out of a total of 227 plants expressed the transferred nptII gene. This plant has until now produced 98 fertile spikes (T0), and four of the 90 T0 spikes analyzed to date contained the nptII gene. These shoots were further analyzed and they expressed the transferred gene. From green grains, embryos were isolated and grown to plantlets (T1). The four transgenic shoots of Toivo (the T0 plant) produced 25 plantlets as T1 progeny. Altogether fifteen of these T1 plants carried the transferred nptII gene as detected with the PCR technique, fourteen of which expressed the nptII gene. The integration and inheritance of the transferred nptII gene was confirmed by Southern blot hybridization. Although present as several copies, the transferred gene was inherited as a single Mendelian locus into the T2 progeny.  相似文献

We studied the induction of salicylates in mature leaves ofSalix myrsinifolia Salisb. (Salicaceae) following severe woundingby a specialist leaf-beetle Phratora vitellinae L. (Chrysomelidae).Levels of individual salicylates and aromatic amino acids andtheir total levels were determined in leaves at different developmentalstages. Induction of salicylates depended on: (1) the individualcompound; (2) the developmental stage of the plant organ; and(3) the genotype of the plant. Induction of salicylates wassystemic: levels of salicylates rose in unwounded young immatureand mature leaves, but no local response was detected in woundedleaves. In addition, there were clear clonal variations in boththe constant and induced levels of salicylates: clones withthe highest levels of salicylates were also most capable ofincreasing this level in response to herbivore attack i.e. notrade-off between constant and induced levels was detected.Furthermore, the levels of three aromatic amino acids, Phe,Tyr and Trp, increased in immature leaves of herbivore-affectedplants, which may indicate induction of enzymes of the shikimatepathway by wounding. The increase in salicylates was suggestedto be a consequence of an increased rate of synthesis ratherthan that of translocation. The induced levels of salicylatesdid not affect the subsequent feeding of highly specializedP. vitellinae. However, the ability to increase levels of salicylatesmay reduce grazing by generalist herbivores which are not ableto tolerate high levels of salicylates.   1. Habitat structural complexity affects the behaviour and physiology of individuals, and responses to the environment can be immediate or influence performance later in life through delayed effects.
  2. Here, we investigated how structural enrichment, both pre‐release in the hatchery rearing environment and post‐release in the wild, influenced winter growth and site fidelity of brown trout stocked into side channels of a regulated river.
  3. Experiencing structural enrichment in the rearing environment during 3 months in autumn had no pre‐release effect on growth, but a delayed positive effect after release during the subsequent winter. Moreover, trout recaptured in wood‐treated sections of the side channels had grown more than trout recaptured in control sections. Wood enrichment in the side channels also increased overwinter site fidelity.
  4. These results show that adding structure during a relatively short period may alter growth trajectories, and adding wood to side channels is a cost‐effective method to enhance winter habitat carrying capacity for juvenile salmonids in regulated rivers.

Ecological restoration is expected to reverse the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Due to the low number of well‐replicated field studies, the extent to which restoration recovers plant communities, and the factors underlying possible shortcomings, are not well understood even in medium term. We compared the plant community composition of 38 sites comprising pristine, forestry‐drained, and 5 or 10 years ago restored peatlands in southern Finland, with special interest in understanding spatial variation within studied sites, as well as the development of the numbers and the abundances of target species. Our results indicated a recovery of community composition 5–10 years after restoration, but there was significant heterogeneity in recovery. Plant communities farthest away from ditches were very similar to their pristine reference already 10 years after restoration. In contrast, communities in the ditches were as far from the target as the drained communities. The recovery appears to be characterized by a decline in the number and abundance of species typical to degraded conditions, and increase in the abundance of characteristic peatland species. However, we found no increase above the drained state in the number of characteristic peatland species. Our results suggest that there is a risk of drawing premature conclusions on the efficiency of ecological restoration with the current practice of short‐term monitoring. Our results also illustrate fine‐scale within‐site spatial variability in the degradation and recovery of the plant communities that should be considered when evaluating the success of restoration. Overall, we find the heterogeneous outcome of restoration observed here promising. However, low recovery in the number of characteristic species demonstrates the importance of prioritizing restoration sites, and addressing the uncertainty of recovery when setting restoration targets. It appears that it is easier to eradicate unwanted species than regain characteristic species by restoration.  相似文献

Gerbera hybrida is a member of the large sunflower family (Asteraceae). Typical of Asteraceae, Gerbera bears different types of flowers in its inflorescence. The showy marginal flowers comprise elongate, ligulate corollas that are female, whereas the central and inconspicuous disc flowers are complete, with both male and female organs. As such, Gerbera offers great potential for comparative developmental research within a single genotype. Moreover, different Gerbera varieties show an impressive spectrum of color patterns, directly displaying responses to developmental cues at all important morphological levels (flower type, flower organ and within organs). Further, Gerbera harbors an arsenal of Asteraceae-type secondary metabolites, not present in other model plants. With powerful reverse genetics methods, a large collection of EST sequences and a new cDNA microarray, Gerbera has become a model plant of the sunflower family.  相似文献

The quantification of cambial growth over short time periods has been hampered by problems to discern between growth and the swelling and shrinking of a tree stem. This paper presents a model, which separates cambial growth and reversible water‐potential induced diurnal changes from simultaneously measured whole stem and xylem radial variations, from field‐measured Scots pine trees in Finland. The modelled growth, which includes osmotic concentration changes, was compared with (direct) dendrometer measurements and microcore samples. In addition, the relationship of modelled growth and dendrometer measurements to environmental factors was analysed. The results showed that the water‐potential induced changes of tree radius were successfully separated from stem growth. Daily growth predicted by the model exhibited a high correlation with the modelled daily changes of osmotic concentration in phloem, and a temperature dependency in early summer. Late‐summer growth saw higher dependency on water availability and temperature. Evaluation of the model against dendrometer measurements showed that the latter masked a true environmental signal in stem growth due to water‐potential induced changes. The model provides better understanding of radial growth physiology and offers potential to examine growth dynamics and changes due to osmotic concentration, and how the environment affects growth.  相似文献

Objectives

To understand the relation between risk genes for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and their influence on biomarkers for AD, we examined the association of AD in the Finnish cohort with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from top AlzGene loci, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and candidate gene studies; and tested the correlation between these SNPs and AD markers Aβ1–42, total tau (t-tau), and phosphorylated tau (p-tau) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Methods

We tested 25 SNPs for genetic association with clinical AD in our cohort comprised of 890 AD patients and 701-age matched healthy controls using logistic regression. For the correlational study with biomarkers, we tested 36 SNPs in a subset of 222 AD patients with available CSF using mixed models. Statistical analyses were adjusted for age, gender and APOE status. False discovery rate for multiple testing was applied. All participants were from academic hospital and research institutions in Finland.

Results

APOE-ε4, CLU rs11136000, and MS4A4A rs2304933 correlated with significantly decreased Aβ1–42 (corrected p<0.05). At an uncorrected p<0.05, PPP3R1 rs1868402 and MAPT rs2435211 were related with increased t-tau; while SORL1 rs73595277 and MAPT rs16940758, with increased p-tau. Only TOMM40 rs2075650 showed association with clinical AD after adjusting for APOE-ε4 (p = 0.007), but not after multiple test correction (p>0.05).

Conclusions

We provide evidence that APOE-ε4, CLU and MS4A4A, which have been identified in GWAS to be associated with AD, also significantly reduced CSF Aβ1–42 in AD. None of the other AlzGene and GWAS loci showed significant effects on CSF tau. The effects of other SNPs on CSF biomarkers and clinical AD diagnosis did not reach statistical significance. Our findings suggest that APOE-ε4, CLU and MS4A4A influence both AD risk and CSF Aβ1–42.  相似文献
