Long-term microtine dynamics in north Fennoscandian tundra: the vole cycle and the lemming chaos 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Densities of microtine rodents in two habitat complexes in the tundra of Finnmarks-vidda, Norwegian Lapland, were studied during 1977-89 by means of snap trapping (Small Quadrat Method) Predator populations were studied by mapping breeding raptors and by snow-tracking small mustelids During 1977-85, snow-trackmg was conducted only during peak and decline years, whereas during 1986-89, snow-tracking was conducted every winter (November-December) and live-trapping (in August) was used as an additional method

The habitat use of small mustelids in a tundra area in Norwegian Lapland was studied chiefly by means of snow-tracking 1986-89 Stoats showed strong peference to a habitat complex immediately beneath the thrust line of the Scandes, with exceptional abundance of luxuriant habitats, whereas weasel activity was more evenly spread over the lowland tundra Mustelid activity on the high tundra above the thrust line was consistently low Within each subarea. stoat activity was concentrated to the most luxuriant habitats Similar preferences were shown by weasels on the lowland but not in the vicinity of the thurst cliff Daily movements of both species varied from local (c 200 m) to extensive (up to 4 km), no consistent interspecific differences in travel distances could be observed

Summary A high prevalence of the lysosomal storage disease aspartylglycosaminuria was found in a study of four birth cohorts of 12882 children in eastern Finland. Using school achievement tests and registers of mentally retarded individuals, 178 mentally retarded children were identified. Randomized urine samples from 151 of the 178 retarded children and from 101 healthy children were analyzed quantitatively for aspartylglucosamine by high-performance liquid chromatography. The results identified three affected individuals in the retarded group indicating an exceptionally high prevalence of aspartylglycosaminuria (1:3643) in the study population, consistent with a carrier frequency of 1:30. The 95% confidence limits for the prevalence are 1:4 352-1:16389. This is the highest prevalence described for any glycoproteinosis in any population and comparable to the incidence figures of the most common lysosomal storage diseases, Gaucher disease type I and Tay-Sachs disease among Ashkenazi Jews. In the study group, aspartylglycosaminuria was, after trisomy 21 (n = 19) and the fragile X syndrome (n = 6), the most common genetic cause for mental retardation. 相似文献

The effects of chilling in the light (4 days at 5°C and 100-200 micromoles of photons per square meter per second) on the distribution of chlorophyll (Chl) protein complexes between appressed and nonappressed thylakoid regions of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) chloroplasts were studied and compared with the changes occurring during in vitro heat treatment (5 minutes at 40°C) of isolated thylakoids. Both treatments induced an increase (18 and 65%, respectively) in the relative amount of the antenna Chl a protein complexes (CP47 + CP43) of photosystem II (PSII) in stroma lamellae vesicles. Freeze-fracture replicas of light-chilled material revealed an increase in the particle density on the exoplasmic fracture face of unstacked membrane regions. These two treatments differed markedly, however, in respect to comigration of the light-harvesting Chl a/b protein complex (LHCII) of PSII. The LHCII/PSII ratio in stroma lamellae vesicles remained fairly constant during chilling in the light, whereas it dropped during the heat treatment. Moreover, it was a minor light-harvesting Chl a/b protein complex of PSII, CP29, that increased most in stroma lamellae vesicles during light-chilling. Changes in the organization of LHCII during chilling were suggested by a shift to particles of smaller sizes on the protoplasmic fracture face of stacked membrane regions and a decrease in the amount of trans-Δ3-hexadecenoic acid in the phosphatidyldiacylglycerol fraction. 相似文献

Attached leaves of pumpkin ( Cucurbita pepo L. cv. Jattiläismeloni) were exposed to high light intensity at room temperature (ca 23°C) and at 1°C. Fluorescence parameters and electron transport activities measured from isolated thylakoids indicated faster photoinhibition of PSII at low temperature. Separation of the α and β components of the complementary area above the fluorescence induction curve of dichlorophenyl-dimethylurea-poisoned thylakoids revealed that at low temperature only the α-centers declined during exposure to high light intensity while the content of functional β-centers remained constant. Freeze-fracture electron microscopy showed no decrease in the density of particles on the appressed exoplasmic fracture face, indicating that the photoinhibited α-centers remained in the appressed membranes at 1°C. Because of the function of the repair and protective mechanisms of PSII, strong light induced less photoinhibition at room temperature, but more complicated changes occurred in the α/β-heterogeneity of PSII. During the first 30 min at high light intensity the decrease in α-centers was almost as large as at 1°C, but in contrast to the situation at low temperature the decrease in α-centers was compensated for by a significant increase in PSIIβ-centers. Changes in the density and size of freeze-fracture particles suggest that this increase in β-centers was due to migration of phosphorylated light-harvesting complex from appressed to non-appressed thylakoid membranes while the PSII core remained in the appressed membranes. Summary 1. Innervation of the mammalian pineal gland is mainly sympathetic. Pineal synthesis of melatonin and its levels in the circulation are thought to be under strict adrenergic control of serotoninN-acetyltransferase (NAT). In addition, several putative pineal neurotransmitters modulate melatonin synthesis and secretion.2. In this review, we summarize what is currently known on the pineal cholinergic system. Cholinergic signaling in the rat pineal gland is suggested based on the localization of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), as well as muscarinic and nicotinic ACh binding sites in the gland.3. A functional role of ACh may be regulation of pineal synaptic ribbon numbers and modulation of melatonin secretion, events possibly mediated by phosphoinositide (PI) hydrolysis and activation of protein kinase C via muscarinic ACh receptors (mAChRs).4. We also present previously unpublished data obtained using primary cultures of rat pinealocytes in an attempt to get more direct information on the effects of cholinergic stimulus on pinealocyte melatonin secretion. The distribution of chlorophyll in the chlorophyll-protein complexeswas studied in Salix sp. aquatica gigantea grownunder high and low irradiance. The chlorophyll- containing bandsthat could be separated by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresisin strong and weak light numbered 9 to 13 and 9 to 11, respectively.In strong light the following bands were separated, in the orderof the highest to the lowest molecular weight: one to two chlorophylla/b-protein complexes, three to four chlorophyll a-containingbands similar to the P700-chlorophyll a-protein complex (CPIand its oligomers), three oligomers of the light-harvestingchlorophyll a/b-protein complex (LHCP***, LHCP**, LHCP*), twochlorophyll a-protein complexes (CPa2 and CPa1), the light-harvestingchlorophyll a/b-protein complex (LHCP) and the protein freepigment (FP). In weak light the same chlorophyll-containingbands were separated with the exception that no high molecularweight chlorophyll a/b-protein complexes could be observed.In strong light the CPI complexes were the largest structuralcomponent of the chloroplast lamellae. In weak light the LHCPcomplexes together contributed the major proportion of the totalchlorophyll. The increase in the chlorophyll associated withthe LHCP complex was possibly caused by reorganization of thelamellar structure or by increased synthesis of the LHCP** complex,which appeared to be a labile complex in weak light. A novel signal generation principle suitable for real time and end-point detection of specific PCR products in a closed tube is described. Linear DNA probes were labeled at their 5′-ends with a stable, fluorescent terbium chelate. The fluorescence intensity of this chelate is lower when it is coupled to single-stranded DNA than when the chelate is free in solution. The synthesized probes were used in the real time monitoring of PCR using a prototype instrument that consisted of a fluorometer coupled to a thermal cycler. When the probe anneals to a complementary target amplicon, the 5′→3′ exonucleolytic activity of DNA polymerase detaches the label from the probe. This results in an enhanced terbium fluorescence signal. Since terbium has a long excited state lifetime, its fluorescence can be measured in a time-resolved manner, which results in a low background fluorescence and a 1000-fold signal amplification. The detection method is quantitative over an extremely wide linear range (at least 10–107 initial template molecules). The label strategy can easily be combined with existing label technologies, such as TaqMan 5′-exonuclease assays, in order to carry out multiplex assays that do not suffer from overlapping emission peaks of the fluorophores. 相似文献

Ecosystem services are vital for humans in urban regions. However, urban development poses a great risk for the ability of
ecosystems to provide these services. In this paper we first address the most important ecosystem services in functional urban
regions in Finland. Well accessible and good quality recreational ecosystem services, for example, provided by urban nature,
are an important part of a high-quality living environment and important for public health. Vegetation of urban regions can
have a role in carbon dioxide sequestration and thus in climate change mitigation. For instance, estimates of carbon sinks
can be compared to total CO2 emissions of an urban region, and the municipality can aim at both increasing carbon sinks and decreasing CO2 emissions with proper land-use planning. Large and contiguous core nature areas, smaller green areas and ecological connections
between them are the essence of regional ecological networks and are essential for maintaining interconnected habitats for
species and thus biological diversity. Thus, both local and regional level ecological networks are vital for maintaining ecosystem
services in urban regions. The impacts of climate change coupled with land-use and land cover change will bring serious challenges
for maintaining ecosystem services in urban areas. Although not yet widely used in planning practices, the ecosystem services
approach can provide an opportunity for land-use planning to develop ecologically sustainable urban regions. Currently, information
on ecosystem services of urban regions is lacking and there is a need to improve the knowledge base for land-use planning. 相似文献
