Three groups of rats were fed two types of synthetic diets for 52 d. The—A group was allowed free access to a vitamin A-deficient
diet and showed classical signs of vitamin A deficiency. The brain was the only organ in our experiment where no significant
weight difference was present among the three groups. In the brain, calcium concentration was significantly higher in the—A
group when compared with the PF (Pair-fed; allowed restricted amount of control diet) and +A groups (allowed free access to
control diet). In the tibia, calcium and magnesium concentrations were significantly lower in the—A group when compared with
other two groups. Excessive accumulation of calcium in brain and apparently similar unbalance in bone, mineral concentration
were observed in central nervous system (CNS) degenerative diseases. Our results suggest that abnormal metabolism of calcium
and magnesium in some tissues and excessive accumulation of calcium in brain may be responsible for the development of neurological
disorders in vitamin A-deficient rats. 相似文献

Phosphatidylcholine is a constituent of Chlamydia trachomatis membranes that must be acquired from its mammalian host to support bacterial proliferation. The CLA1 (SR‐B1) receptor is a bi‐directional phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol transporter that is recruited to the inclusion of Chlamydia‐infected cells along with ABCA1. C. trachomatis growth was inhibited in a dose‐dependent manner by BLT‐1, a selective inhibitor of CLA1 function. Expression of a BLT‐1‐insensitive CLA1(C384S) mutant ameliorated the effect of the drug on chlamydial growth. CLA1 knockdown using shRNAs corroborated an important role for CLA1 in the growth of C. trachomatis. Trafficking of a fluorescent phosphatidylcholine analogue to Chlamydia was blocked by the inhibition of CLA1 or ABCA1 function, indicating a critical role for these transporters in phosphatidylcholine acquisition by this organism. Our analyses using a dual‐labelled fluorescent phosphatidylcholine analogue and mass spectrometry showed that the phosphatidylcholine associated with isolated Chlamydia was unmodified host phosphatidylcholine. These results indicate that C. trachomatis co‐opts host phospholipid transporters normally used to assemble lipoproteins to acquire host phosphatidylcholine essential for growth. 相似文献

A new species of Phytophthora was isolated from stem and root rot of chrysanthemum in the Gifu and Toyama prefectures of Japan. The species differs from
other Phytophthora species morphologically, and is characterized by nonpapillate, noncaducous sporangia with internal proliferation, formation
of both hyphal swellings and chlamydospores, homothallic nature, distinctive intercalary antheridia, and funnel-shaped oogonia.
The new species can grow even at 35°C, with an optimum growth temperature of 30°C in V8 juice agar medium. In phylogenetic
analyses based on five nuclear regions (LSU rDNA; genes for translation elongation factor 1α, β-tubulin, 60 S ribosomal protein
L10, and heat shock protein 90), the isolates formed a monophyletic clade. Although the rDNA ITS region shows a high resolution
and has proven particularly useful for the separation of Phytophthora species, it was difficult to align the sequences for phylogenetic analysis. Therefore, ITS region analysis using related
species as defined by the multigene phylogeny was performed, and the topology of the resulting tree also revealed a monophyletic
clade formed by the isolates of the species. The morphological characteristics and phylogenetic relationships indicate that
the isolates represent a new species, Phytophthora chrysanthemi sp. nov. In pathogenicity tests, chrysanthemum plants inoculated with the isolates developed lesions on stems and roots within
3 days, and the symptoms resembled the ones originally observed. Finally, the pathogen’s identity was confirmed by re-isolation

Objective
To determine the risk factors for developing multidrug resistant tuberculosis in Bangladesh.Methods
This case-control study was set in central, district and sub-district level hospitals of rural and urban Bangladesh. Included were 250 multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients as cases and 750 drug susceptible tuberculosis patients as controls. We recruited cases from all three government hospitals treating MDR-TB in Bangladesh during the study period. Controls were selected randomly from those local treatment units that had referred the cases. Information was collected through face-to-face interviews and record reviews. Unadjusted and multivariable logistic regression were used to analyse the data.Results
Previous treatment history was shown to be the major contributing factor to MDR-TB in univariate analysis. After adjusting for other factors in multivariable analysis, age group “18–25” (OR 1.77, CI 1.07–2.93) and “26–45” (OR 1.72, CI 1.12–2.66), some level of education (OR 1.94, CI 1.32–2.85), service and business as occupation (OR 2.88, CI 1.29–6.44; OR 3.71, CI 1.59–8.66, respectively), smoking history (OR 1.58, CI 0.99–2.5), and type 2 diabetes (OR 2.56 CI 1.51–4.34) were associated with MDR-TB. Previous treatment was not included in the multivariable analysis as it was correlated with multiple predictors.Conclusion
Previous tuberculosis treatment was found to be the major risk factor for MDR-TB. This study also identified age 18 to 45 years, some education up to secondary level, service and business as occupation, past smoking status, and type 2 diabetes as comorbid illness as risk factors. National Tuberculosis programme should address these risk factors in MDR-TB control strategy. The integration of MDR-TB control activities with diabetes and tobacco control programmes is needed in Bangladesh. 相似文献5.

The incidence of hypertension has been associated to cigarette smoking and consumption of alcohol. In the present study, trace
and toxic elements were determined in scalp hair of patients diagnosed with hypertension who are smokers and habitual alcohol
drinkers living in Dublin, Ireland. These results were compared with age- and sex-matched healthy, nonsmokers, nondrinking
controls. The concentrations of trace and toxic elements were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometer
after microwave-assisted acid digestion. The validity and accuracy of the methodology were checked using certified reference
material (NCS ZC 81002b) and by the conventional wet acid digestion method on the same certified reference material and on
real samples. The recovery of all the studied elements was found to be in the range of 97.5%–99.7% in certified reference
material. The results of this study showed that the mean values of cadmium, copper, iron, nickel and lead were significantly
higher in scalp hair samples of both smoker and nonsmoker hypertensive patients than referents (P < 0.001); whereas, the concentration of zinc was lower in the scalp hair samples of hypertensive patients of both genders.
The deficiency of zinc and the high exposure of trace and toxic metals as a result of cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption
may be synergistic with risk factors associated with hypertension. 相似文献

The incidence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been associated with cigarette smoking. The aim of our study was to assess the trace essential and toxic metals, cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), in scalp hair samples of 32 Irish and 46 Pakistani smokers and non-smokers RA male patients with age range 42-56 years. For comparison purpose, the scalp hair samples of 27 Irish and 55 Pakistani non-RA male subjects of the same age group were collected. The concentrations of trace and toxic elements were measured by inductive coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometer and atomic absorption spectrophotometer prior to microwave-assisted acid digestion. The validity and accuracy of the methodology was checked using certified reference materials and using conventional wet acid digestion method on the same certified reference materials (CRMs). The recovery of all studied elements was found to be in the range of 97.5-99.7% of certified reference values of CRMs. The results of this study showed that the mean values of Cd and Pb were significantly higher in scalp hair samples of both smoker and non-smoker RA patients than in referents (P < 0.001), whereas the concentration of Zn was lower in the scalp hair samples of smokers and non-smokers rheumatoid arthritis patients. The deficiency of Zn and the high exposure of Cd and Pb as a result of cigarette smoking may be synergistic risk factors associated with rheumatoid arthritis. 相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the total microbial population, the occurrence of growth promoting bacteria and their beneficial traits in acid sulfate soils. The mechanisms by which the bacteria enhance rice seedlings grown under high Al and low pH stress were investigated. Soils and rice root samples were randomly collected from four sites in the study area (Kelantan, Malaysia). The topsoil pH and exchangeable Al ranged from 3.3 to 4.7 and 1.24 to 4.25 cmolc kg−1, respectively, which are considered unsuitable for rice production. Total bacterial and actinomycetes population in the acidic soils were found to be higher than fungal populations. A total of 21 phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) including 19 N2-fixing strains were isolated from the acid sulfate soil. Using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, three potential PSB strains based on their beneficial characteristics were identified (Burkholderia thailandensis, Sphingomonas pituitosa and Burkholderia seminalis). The isolated strains were capable of producing indoleacetic acid (IAA) and organic acids that were able to reduce Al availability via a chelation process. These PSB isolates solubilized P (43.65%) existing in the growth media within 72 hours of incubation. Seedling of rice variety, MR 219, grown at pH 4, and with different concentrations of Al (0, 50 and 100 µM) was inoculated with these PSB strains. Results showed that the bacteria increased the pH with a concomitant reduction in Al concentration, which translated into better rice growth. The improved root volume and seedling dry weight of the inoculated plants indicated the potential of these isolates to be used in a bio-fertilizer formulation for rice cultivation on acid sulfate soils. 相似文献

On the short arm of tomato chromosome 6, a cluster of disease resistance (R) genes have evolved harboring the Mi-1 and Cf genes. The Mi-1 gene confers resistance to root-knot nematodes, aphids, and whiteflies. Previously, we mapped two genes, Ol-4 and Ol-6, for resistance to tomato powdery mildew in this cluster. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Ol-4 and Ol-6 are homologues of the R genes located in this cluster. We show that near-isogenic lines (NIL) harboring Ol-4 (NIL-Ol-4) and Ol-6 (NIL-Ol-6) are also resistant to nematodes and aphids. Genetically, the resistance to nematodes cosegregates with Ol-4 and Ol-6, which are further fine-mapped to the Mi-1 cluster. We provide evidence that the composition of Mi-1 homologues in NIL-Ol-4 and NIL-Ol-6 is different from other nematode-resistant tomato lines, Motelle and VFNT, harboring the Mi-1 gene. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the resistance to both nematodes and tomato powdery mildew in these two NIL is governed by linked (if not the same) Mi-1 homologues in the Mi-1 gene cluster. Finally, we discuss how Solanum crops exploit Mi-1 homologues to defend themselves against distinct pathogens. 相似文献
