Lipid peroxidation and scavenging enzyme levels in the liver of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

In this study, alterations in the liver antioxidant enzymes status and lipid peroxidation in short-term (8-weeks) and long-term (24-weeks) diabetic rats were examined. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly increased, but superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was significantly reduced in 8-weeks diabetic rats, compared to control. Catalase (CAT) activity, however, was found unchanged. In 24-weeks diabetic rats, while GSH-Px activity was unchanged, but SOD and CAT activities and MDA levels were significantly increased, compared to control. These results suggest that diabetes-induced alterations in tissue antioxidant system may reflect a generalized increase in tissue oxidative stress. It can be concluded that lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme levels are elevated in diabetic condition. Hence, diabetes mellitus, if left untreated, may increase degenerative processes due to accumulation of oxidative free radicals. 相似文献

Mass media content likely influences the decision of women to breastfeed their newborn children. Relatively few studies have empirically assessed such a hypothesis to date, however. Most work has tended to focus either on specific interventions or on broad general commentary about the role of media. In this study, we examined infant feeding advertisements in 87 issues of Parents' Magazine, a popular parenting magazine, from the years 1971 through 1999. We then used content analysis results to predict subsequent changes in levels of breastfeeding among U.S. women. When the frequency of hand feeding advertisements increased, the percentage change in breastfeeding rates reported the next year generally tended to decrease. These results underscore the need to acknowledge the potential role of popular media content in understanding breastfeeding patterns and public health trends. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between frequency and phospholipase activity of Candida species and denture stomatitis according to Newton’s classification. Seventy-five complete denture wearers were evaluated
for the presence of yeasts on the palatal mucosa by culture method. In addition, the number of yeast isolates producing phospholipase
and amount of this enzyme were determined using egg yolk agar plate method. According to Newton’s classification, 25 denture
wearers were with healthy palatal mucosa while 50 were with any types of denture stomatitis. The frequency of yeasts was linked
to whether subjects had Type II or Type III, but not Type I denture stomatitis. Candida albicans was the most frequently isolated species in denture wearers with and without clinical signs of denture stomatitis and it
was the only species produced phospholipase. Although the amount of phospholipase produced by the C. albicans isolates from denture wearers in control and Type II and III DS groups was not significantly different, there was statistically
significant difference in the number of C. albicans isolates producing phospholipase between patients with and without clinical signs of DS. 相似文献

Beta adrenergic receptor blocking drugs (β-blockers) are used chronically in many cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia, and heart failure. Beneficial effects are associated with the inhibition of symphathetic nervous system hyperactivity, reduction of heart rate, and remodeling by blocking the mitogenic activity of catecholamines. A possible effect of β-blockers on substrate metabolism has also been suggested. The direct effects of β-blockers on mouse C2C12 cells were investigated in this study. C2C12 cells were grown in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) and differentiated into myotubes in the same medium that contained 1% FBS. Palmitic acid oxidation and glycolysis were measured by using [9,10-(3)H]palmitate and [5-(3)H]glucose, respectively. The amount of (3)H(2)O was measured as an indicator of substrate usage. Carvedilol (100 μmol/L) inhibited palmitate oxidation and increased glycolysis by nearly 50%. Prazosin altered substrate metabolism in a similar fashion as carvedilol, whereas propranolol or bisoprolol were devoid of metabolic effects. When added to mimic sympathetic activation, epinephrine stimulated glycolysis but did not alter fatty acid oxidation. Based on these results, carvedilol appears to have direct effects on substrate metabolism that are related to the blockade of α1 adrenergic receptors. 相似文献

Summary Microbial enhance oil recovery utilizes microorganisms and their metabolic products to improve the recovery of crude oil from reservoir rocks. In this study an anaerobic bacterium, Clostridium acetobutylicum was injected into a one-dimensional model reservoir containing a Turkish heavy oil (Raman oil) at 38° C. This injection was followed by water flooding after a suitable shut-in period. Comparison of oil recovery results of pure water flooding runs with experiments in which bacterial concentration and shut-in periods were varied indicated increases in oil recovery of about 12% of the original oil in place. Obesity is a major health problem. We investigated the effects of forskolin and rolipram in the diet of animals in which obesity had been induced. We used 50 female albino Wistar rats that were assigned randomly into five groups as follows: group 1, control; group 2, high fat diet; group 3, high fat diet + forskolin; group 4, high fat diet + rolipram; and group 5, high fat diet + rolipram + forskolin. The rats were fed for 10 weeks and rolipram and forskolin were administered during last two weeks. The animals were sacrificed and blood samples were obtained. Serum cAMP, cGMP and free fatty acids (FFA) levels were measured using ELISA assays. We also measured weight gain during the 10 week period. cAMP and FFA levels of groups 3, 4 and 5 were significantly higher than those of groups 1 and 2. We found no significant differences in serum cGMP levels among the groups. The weight gain in groups 3, 4 and 5 was significantly less than for group 2. We also found that the weight gain in group 5 was significantly less than in groups 3 and 4. We found that both forskolin and rolipram stimulated lipolysis and inhibited body weight increase by increasing cAMP levels. Also, combination therapy using the two agents may be more effective in preventing diet induced obesity than either agent alone. We found also that these agents did not effect cellular cGMP levels in diet induced obesity. 相似文献

Although Na+-H+ exchange (NHE) inhibitors such as methyl-N-isobutyl amiloride (MIA) are known to depress the cardiac function, the mechanisms of their negative inotropic effect are not completely understood. In this study, isolated rat hearts were perfused with MIA to study its action on cardiac performance, whereas isolated subcellular organelles such as sarcolemma, myofibrils, sarcoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria were treated with MIA to determine its effect on their function. The effect of MIA on intracellular Ca2+ mobilization was examined in fura-2-AM-loaded cardiomyocytes. MIA was observed to depress cardiac function in a concentration-dependent manner in HCO3- -free buffer. On the other hand, MIA had an initial positive inotropic effect followed by a negative inotropic effect in HCO3-containing buffer. MIA increased the basal concentration of intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) and augmented the KCl-mediated increase in [Ca2+]i. MIA did not show any direct effect on myofibrils, sarcolemma, and sarcoplasmic reticulum ATPase activities; however, this agent was found to decrease the intracellular pH, which reduced the myofibrils Ca2+-stimulated ATPase activity. MIA also increased Ca2+ uptake by mitochondria without having any direct effect on sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ uptake. In addition, MIA did not protect the hearts subjected to mild Ca2+ paradox as well as ischemia-reperfusion-mediated injury. These results suggest that the increase in [Ca2+]i in cardiomyocytes may be responsible for the initial positive inotropic effect of MIA, but its negative inotropic action may be due to mitochondrial Ca2+ overloading as well as indirect depression of myofibrillar Ca2+ ATPase activity. Thus the accumulation of [H+]i as well as occurrence of intracellular and mitochondrial Ca2+ overload may explain the lack of beneficial effects of MIA in preventing the ischemia-reperfusion-induced myocardial injury. 相似文献

Ardiç-Mordo?an is a new fossil Mammal locality in the Karaburun Peninsula of Western Turkey. Among its fauna, which is described here, the carnivores are especially interesting, with the most complete specimens ever found ofPercrocuta miocenica and of a primitive species of hyaenid, of which a new subspecies is described,Protictitherium intermedium paralium. This fauna is strongly reminiscent of those of sever-al other Middle Miocene localities in this area, Çandir, Pa?alar and Inönü in Turkey, and Prebreza in Serbia, and they must all belong to the same mammalian zone. Their ungulates attest an open environment which must have been widespread in the Turko-Balkanic area in Serravallian times. 相似文献
