The Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica rarely defends its nest aggressively against predators, but rather associates with other more aggressive species for protection. I studied the distribution of Bar-tailed Godwit nests relative to nests of the aggressive Longtailed Skua Stercorarius longicaudus, as well as to nests of two slightly less aggressive alternative 'protective umbrella' species, the Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus and the Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola. Rodents are the main prey of the Long-tailed Skua but, in years when numbers of rodents are low, Long-tailed Skuas also eat eggs and chicks of other birds. Data on rodent densities and nest distribution were collected on Finnmarksvidda, Northern Norway, in 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1997, and on Taimyr, Siberia, in 1994 and 1995. It is concluded that the Bar-tailed Godwit is able to evaluate the probability of nest predation from Long-tailed Skuas, based on direct or indirect information about the status of local rodent populations. This information is used to choose between Long-tailed Skuas and other potential species for protection against nest predators.  相似文献

Foraging behaviour of sympatric Bar-tailed Godwits Limosa lapponica and Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus was studied in the period prior to egg-laying. Godwit females preferred wet bogs, while godwit males and Whimbrels foraged on dry palsas in the bogs. Habitat overlap between godwit males and Whimbrels was larger than intersexual overlap in the godwits. Observations of scanning behaviour of foraging godwits showed that the vigilance level of males was not affected by the presence or absence of their mates. Female vigilance levels, however, dropped significantly when females fed near their mate, and—in the absence of the mate—near Whimbrels. While female godwits benefited from associating with Whimbrels, males seemed to avoid close proximity to this species. Whimbrels chased godwit males more often than females, presumably because they used the same foraging habitats.  相似文献

Homoploid hybrid speciation in animals is poorly understood, mainly because of the scarcity of well‐documented cases. Here, we present the results of a multilocus sequence analysis on the house sparrow (Passer domesticus), Spanish sparrow (P. hispaniolensis) and their proposed hybrid descendant, the Italian sparrow (P. italiae). The Italian sparrow is shown to be genetically intermediate between the house sparrow and Spanish sparrow, exhibiting genealogical discordance and a mosaic pattern of alleles derived from either of the putative parental species. The average variation on the Z chromosome was significantly reduced compared with autosomal variation in the putative parental species, the house sparrow and Spanish sparrow. Additionally, divergence between the two species was elevated on the Z chromosome relative to the autosomes. This pattern of variation and divergence is consistent with reduced introgression of Z‐linked genes and/or a faster‐Z effect (increased rate of adaptive divergence on the Z). FST‐outlier tests were consistent with the faster‐Z hypothesis: two of five Z‐linked loci (CHD1Z and PLAA) were identified as candidates for being subject to positive, divergent selection in the putative parental species. Interestingly, the two latter genes showed a mosaic pattern in the (hybrid) Italian sparrow; that is, the Italian sparrow was found to be fixed for Spanish sparrow alleles at CHD1Z and to mainly have house sparrow alleles at PLAA. Preliminary evidence presented in this study thus suggests that sex chromosomes may play a significant role in this case of homoploid hybrid speciation.  相似文献

Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) is a broadly distributed European conifer tree whose history has been intensively studied by means of fossil records to infer the location of full‐glacial refugia and the main routes of postglacial colonization. Here we use recently compiled fossil pollen data as a template to examine how past demographic events have influenced the species’ modern genetic diversity. Variation was assessed in the mitochondrial nad1 gene containing two minisatellite regions. Among the 369 populations (4876 trees) assayed, 28 mitochondrial variants were identified. The patterns of population subdivision superimposed on interpolated fossil pollen distributions indicate that survival in separate refugia and postglacial colonization has led to significant structuring of genetic variation in the southern range of the species. The populations in the northern range, on the other hand, showed a shallow genetic structure consistent with the fossil pollen data, suggesting that the vast northern range was colonized from a single refugium. Although the genetic diversity decreased away from the putative refugia, there were large differences between different colonization routes. In the Alps, the diversity decreased over short distances, probably as a result of population bottlenecks caused by the presence of competing tree species. In northern Europe, the diversity was maintained across large areas, corroborating fossil pollen data in suggesting that colonization took place at high population densities. The genetic diversity increased north of the Carpathians, probably as a result of admixture of expanding populations from two separate refugia.  相似文献

Homoploid hybrid speciation is thought to require unusual circumstances to yield reproductive isolation from the parental species, and few examples are known from nature. Here, we present genetic evidence for this mode of speciation in birds. Using Bayesian assignment analyses of 751 individuals genotyped for 14 unlinked, nuclear microsatellite loci, we show that the phenotypically intermediate Italian sparrow (Passer italiae) does not form a cluster of its own, but instead exhibits clear admixture (over its entire breeding range) between its putative parental species, the house sparrow (P. domesticus) and the Spanish sparrow (P. hispaniolensis). Further, the Italian sparrow possesses mitochondrial (mt) DNA haplotypes identical to both putative parental species (although mostly of house sparrow type), indicating a recent hybrid origin. Today, the Italian sparrow has a largely allopatric distribution on the Italian peninsula and some Mediterranean islands separated from its suggested parental species by the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, but co‐occurs with the Spanish sparrow on the Gargano peninsula in southeast Italy. No evidence of interbreeding was found in this sympatric population. However, the Italian sparrow hybridizes with the house sparrow in a sparsely populated contact zone in the Alps. Yet, the contact zone is characterized by steep clines in species‐specific male plumage traits, suggesting that partial reproductive isolation may also have developed between these two taxa. Thus, geographic and reproductive barriers restrict gene flow into the nascent hybrid species. We propose that an origin of hybrid species where the hybrid lineage gets geographically isolated from its parental species, as seems to have happened in this system, might be more common in nature than previously assumed.  相似文献

The taxonomy and distribution of 11 species of calcareous sponges of the subclass Calcinea from the Norwegian coast are reviewed. The Norwegian Calcinea represents a mixture of southern boreal/boreal and boreoarctic species, and the calcinean sponge fauna of northern Norway has strong similarities to the Greenlandic and the White Sea/Barents Sea sponge faunas. Most Norwegian Calcinea have their main distribution between 20 and 100 m depth, although some species are found only in the shallow sublittoral or from sublittoral to abyssal depths. Six species were previously reported in the area: Clathrina coriacea (Montagu, 1818), Clathrina cribrata Rapp et al ., 2001, Clathrina nanseni (Breitfuss, 1896), Clathrina septentrionalis Rapp et al ., 2001, Guancha blanca Miklucho-Maclay, 1868 and Guancha lacunosa (Johnston, 1842). Five species are new to science: Clathrina corallicola , Clathrina jorunnae , Guancha arnesenae , Guancha camura , and Guancha pellucida spp. nov. A key to the known Norwegian Calcinea is provided.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 147 , 331–365.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Population reduction (PR) and trap-vaccinate-release (TVR) were used to control an outbreak of the raccoon (Procyon lotor) variant of rabies in Ontario, Canada, during 1999. Raccoon density declined significantly following PR; however, density increased significantly 9–10 months post-PR. Recolonization of PR areas with raccoons marked in TVR areas was very low with only 1.8% (32/1,759) of those raccoons dispersing into PR areas during 1999–2000. In addition, the number of raccoons dispersing from TVR areas into PR areas was not significantly greater than the number of raccoons dispersing into treatment areas where population reduction had not been implemented during 1999–2000. Raccoon movements in this study, determined by mark-recapture, averaged < 4.0 km during 1999–2000 and did not differ among treatments (with or without PR). In summary, there was not a mass exodus of raccoons from TVR areas to PR areas during 1999–2000, suggesting there was not an immediate, dramatic, vacuum effect drawing raccoons into areas devoid of raccoons due to PR. However, one year post-PR, raccoon populations were near or above pre-PR densities (due to a high reproductive rate of resident raccoons), suggesting that PR would have to be an annual event if rabies is not eliminated from an area.  相似文献

Over 50 B-cell derived lines and B-cell lymphoma and leukemia biopsies were screened for expression of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) receptor. The 13 sIgM-positive lines bound more than five times as much virus as the six IgG lines. Among the biopsies, the 17 sIgM, 11 sIgM and sIgD, and seven sIgG expressing biopsies were further divided according to expression of the C3 receptor. C3 receptor-positive biopsies, which expressed sIgM alone or along with sIgD, had the largest subpopulation of cells which expressed the EBV receptor (EBVR). C3 receptor-negative biopsies only expressed the EBVR on half as many cells as their C3 receptor-positive counterparts. However, the relative number of EBVR on individual EBVR-positive cells was independent of C3 receptor expression. Within the sIgG class, both C3 receptor-negative and positive cells expressed equally low levels of EBVR, both in terms of subpopulation and relative number of EBVR per positive cell. These results suggest that subpopulation expression of the EBV receptor is related to the C3 receptor but that relative number of receptors per cell is associated with sIg phenotype.  相似文献

Why are some birds polyterritorial?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Whether a male bird is mono- or polyterritorial may be determined by several factors, but a polyterritorial system tends to be found when territories are easy to defend, male competition is not great and the period of defence is short.  相似文献
