The role of cytoplasmic calcium activity in activation of K+-channelsin the unicellular green alga Eremosphaera viridis has beenstudied. As reported previously, after a ‘light off’signal a voltage independent opening of K+-channels in the plasmalemmais observed. This effect is indicated by a transient polarization(TP) with a simultaneous increase of the membrane conductance.TPs can also be triggered by different treatments, which allowinvestigations within a ‘short-circuited’ signalchain. (i) After incubation with EGTA a single extended TP canbe released by a sudden increase of the external calcium concentration.The Ca2+-channel inhibitors nifedipine (10 –2 mol m–3)and verapamil (5 ? 10–2 mol m–3) suppress the releaseof this TP. (ii) In the presence of external calcium the additionof the ionophore A23187 [GenBank] (10–3 mol m–3) causes anextremely prolonged TP. (iii) Low external concentrations ofbarium (10–2 mol m–3) induce repetitive TPs in thepresence of external calcium. In this case the Ca2+-channelinhibitors are less effective. (iv) Strontium (0.1–1.0mol m–3) is able to trigger repetitive TPs even withoutexternal calcium. Whereas barium may stimulate a calcium influx,strontium can serve as a substitute for calcium to induce anopening of K+-channels. These results indicate strongly a Ca2+-dependentand voltage-independent activation of K+-channels in the plasmalemmaof Eremosphaera. The participation of cytoplasmic calcium inthe signal transduction chain after a ‘light off’signal is discussed. THE mitochondrial enzyme β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH) catalyses the conversion of β-hydroxybutyrate to acetoacetate, with the subsequent production of three molecules of adenosine triphosphate for every molecule of β-hydroxybutyrate oxidized. Recent evidence suggests that this energy-yielding reaction is important for maintaining the metabolism of the brain when the supply of glucose is chronically depleted. Owen et al.1 demonstrated that β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate become the principal sources of energy for the brain in humans subjected to prolonged starvation. The transition from glucose to ketones as the primary substrate for oxidative metabolism in the central nervous system occurs without demonstrable cerebral dysfunction1.  相似文献

In this paper, we present data on murid rodents obtained by three major techniques used in biochemical systematics today: protein electrophoresis, scnDNA hybridization and mtDNA RFLP. The data have been analysed by both phenetic and cladistic methods and results of the three techniques were compared with one another. Four clear major levels of divergence (or nodes) can be recognized by all methods. Node 1 groups four subspecies of M. musculus ( domesticus, bactrianus, castaneus and musculus ). Node 2 groups four species: M. musculus, M. spretus, M. spicilegus and M. spretoides . Node 3 groups the stem of node 2 and three strictly Oriental species ( M. caroli, M. cervicolor and M. cookii ) Node 4 groups the previous lineages with Oriental Pyromys and Coelomys and the Ethiopian Nannomys . However, the relationships within each level cannot be resolved without ambiguity. We argue that this is not due to the resolutive power of our methods, but to a biological reality, that is successive adaptive radiations marked by quasi-simultaneous speciation events linked with geographical colonization. Our estimation of divergence time between different taxa showed that the genus Mus is very young. The youngest 'bona fide' species are 1.1 Myr old, or even less than 0.3 Myr if one takes into consideration the two sibling species M. spicilegus and M. spretoides . It appears that mtDNA evolves three to six times faster than scnDNA. The zoogeographical history of the genus can be reconstructed as a séries of adaptative radiations leading to the present day distribution of the Palaearctic, Oriental, and Ethiopian groups of taxa.  相似文献

An immunological test that can be made on living animals is developed to identify M. m. musculus mice from the two other short-tailed mice ( M. spicilegus and M. spretoides ) occurring in Eastern Europe. This test uses fractionated albumin antiserum as an immunological marker and is performed using dot-blot immunoassay. One hundred and twelve animals belonging to the three species and originating from wild-caught mice and from laboratory strains were tested. All the M. m. musculus mice were correctly identified with this test. Owing to its simplicity and reliability, this test will be very useful in field surveys, particularly in the zone of sympatry between M. m. musculus and M. spicilegus .  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Herbivory can induce resistance in a plant and the induced phenotype may be disfavoured by subsequent herbivores. Yet, as the distance between plants in a population increases, limited mobility may make a herbivore more likely to feed and oviposit on host plants in its immediate surroundings.
2. The present study tested whether a herbivore's preference and distribution across plants with different induced phenotypes was influenced by the spatial distribution of plants. A fragmented population of Solanum dulcamara plants was created. This consisted of discrete, spatially separated patches with different histories of damage, either herbivory from adult flea beetles ( Psylliodes affinis ), tortoise beetles ( Plagiometriona clavata ), or mechanical damage. Each patch was separated by 7 m and consisted of 12 plants that were spaced 30 cm apart. Then a fixed number of adult tortoise beetles were introduced to each patch, and movement and oviposition within and between spatially separate homogeneous patches (receiving one type of damage) were compared with movement and oviposition within heterogeneous patches (containing all three types of damage) over the growing season.
3. Flea beetle and tortoise beetle herbivory consistently induced different phytochemical responses in S. dulcamara (polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase), and adult tortoise beetles avoided oviposition on the flea beetle induced plants within heterogeneous patches. However, between homogeneous patches, plant phenotype did not influence oviposition. Colonisation by naturally occurring flea beetle adults followed a similar pattern.
4. These results suggest that the heterogeneity of plant phenotypes can influence herbivore choice and distribution at small but not large spatial scales.  相似文献

1. Although many vector‐borne pathogens are transmitted by an array of vector species, most studies do not account for the potential effects of species interactions. 2. By manipulating conspecific and heterospecific vector density in small experimental mesocosms, this study disentangled the impact of vector density and community composition on vector movement and plant virus transmission in the potato virus Y system. 3. The following predictions were tested: (i) increasing aphid density will increase aphid movement and virus transmission; (ii) adding low‐efficiency vectors and thereby decreasing the average transmission efficiency of the vector assemblage will decrease virus transmission; and (iii) aphid movement and the average vector transmission efficiency will mediate the effect of aphid density and community composition on virus transmission. 4. It was found that initial density positively affected aphid movement, but had no effect on virus transmission, and that conspecific density was more important than heterospecific density. Conversely, community composition affected both aphid movement and virus transmission. These effects were driven by species identity, rather than species richness per se. 5. The results of this study emphasise the importance of accounting for vector behaviour, and analysing it within the context of the wider vector assemblage.  相似文献

BILIRUBIN is present in toxic concentrations in foetuses and premature infants with haemolysis due to blood group incompatibility1. Hyperbilirubinaemia in the neonate has been associated with irreversible nuclear damage in the brain and other tissues2,3 and experimental evidence suggests that bilirubin interferes with oxidative phosphorylation4,5. We have shown that bilirubin inhibits the growth of cells which share with developing tissues the ability to derive an appreciable part of their energy from extramitochondrial processes.  相似文献

The growth pattern of the root system of young rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) was studied in relation to shoot development over a period of 3 months. Temporal and spatial variations in elongation and branching processes were examined for the different root types, by means of root observation boxes. Shoot growth was typically rhythmic. Root development was periodic and related to leaf expansion. Root elongation was depressed during leaf growth, whereas branching was enhanced. Consequently, highly branched areas with vigorous secondary roots alternated along the taproot with poorly branched areas with shorter roots. Root types were not affected to the same degree by shoot competition: during leaf expansion, taproot growth was just depressed but remained continuous, the emergence and elongation rates of secondary roots were significantly affected and the elongation rates of tertiary roots fell to zero. These results were consistent with the hypothesis that root growth is related to competition for assimilates and to the sink strength of the different root types, whereas root branching appeared to be promoted by leaf development.  相似文献
