Summary

The size, structure, and density of a population of Lytechinus variegatus were recorded from a shallow seagrass bed (Halodule wrightii) at 40-day intervals from April 1994 to April 1995. A local mass mortality was observed in May 1994. The density declined from 0.57±0.10 to 0.06±0.05 ind.m?2, mean size declined from 37.6±0.49 to 16.2±2.14 mm and maximum size from 75 to 40 mm. Ten months after mortality, the maximum and mean sizes had returned to initialvalues, but density had not (0.10±0.03 ind.m?2). A second, smaller mass mortality occurred in April 1995. High values of gonad index were recorded before mortality (9.40±5.97) and after population recovery (11.96±5.74). Recruitment was continuous throughout the year, but reached a peak from August to October. This can he related to the patterns of upwelling in the region. Mass mortality is probably an annual event in this population that can be correlated with the occurrence of low tides during daytime in the fell. The population can recover during the summer when low tides occur during the night. The massive input of recruits prevents extinction of the population during the season of high mortality. Population recovery depends on the magnitude of recruitment.  相似文献

The effect of hybridization on morphological variation was investigated in 120 western house mice, Mus musculus domesticus , from the hybrid zone between the Barcelona and standard chromosomal races. The incidence of 37 non-metric cranial traits was calculated for standard mice (2 n  = 40) and Barcelona-standard hybrids (2 n  = 27–39). Subsequent analyses were conducted on several karyological subgroups, established by grouping the animals according to either their diploid number or their degree of chromosomal heterozygosity. Results revealed no significant difference by sex, asymmetry, or geographical distance. Significant phenetic divergences were found between the karyotypes studied in relation to several variants. Differences were especially substantial between the standard race and hybrid mice, even with respect to those hybrids with karyotypes close to that of the standard race. Within the hybrids, the maximum divergence corresponded to the 28-chromosome homozygotes, chromosomally close to the Barcelona race, and to the heterozygotes with more than two fusions. Since differences in non-metric trait frequencies are generally considered a measure of genetic divergence, the results suggest the occurrence of a barrier to gene flow in the Barcelona hybrid zone. The decrease of genetic exchange between the chromosomally differentiated mice might be due to reduced fertility in hybrids, associated with chromosomal heterozygosity.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 313–322.  相似文献

Morphometric variation in the Robertsonian polymorphism zone of Barcelona of Mus musculus domesticus was studied by geometric morphometrics. This system is characterized by populations of reduced diploid number (2 n  = 27–39) surrounded by standard populations (2 n  = 40). We investigated the morphological variation in mice from this area, as well as the effect of geographical distance and karyotype on this variation. We also investigated the degree of co-variation between the two functional units of the mandible to explore the origin of this system (primary intergradation or secondary contact). The size and shape of the cranium, mandible and scapula were analysed for 226 specimens grouped by population, chromosome number and structural heterozygosity. Size was estimated as the centroid size, and shape was estimated after Procrustes superimposition. No significant differences in size between populations or chromosomal groups were detected. Diploid number, structural heterozygosity and local geographical isolation contributed to the differentiation in shape. Morphological differentiation between standard mice and Robertsonian specimens was observed, suggesting genetic isolation between these groups. Co-variation between the ascending ramus and alveolar region of the mandible was quantified by the trace correlation between landmark subsets of these modules. 1. Fish community structure and habitat distribution of the abundant species roach, perch and ruffe were studied in Lake Nordborg (Denmark) before (August 2006) and after (August 2007) aluminium treatment to reduce internal phosphorus loading. 2. Rapid changes in fish community structure, abundance and habitat distribution occurred following a decline in in‐lake phosphorus concentrations from 280 to 37 μg P L?1 and an increase in Secchi depth transparency from 1.1 to 1.9 m (August). The proportion of perch in overnight gill net catches increased, whilst roach decreased, and the average weight of all key species increased. 3. The habitat distribution of perch and roach changed from a high proportion in the upper pelagic and littoral zones in 2006, towards enhanced proportions in the deeper pelagic and profundal zone in 2007. The abundance of large‐bodied zooplankton increased and the abundance of benthic invertebrates decreased in the same period, suggesting that the habitat shift was not induced by food limitation. 4. Ruffe shifted from the littoral and upper profundal zones towards the deep profundal zone, likely reflecting an increased predation risk in the littoral zone and better oxygen conditions in the deep profundal. 5. Our results indicate that enhanced risk of predation in the upper pelagic and the littoral zones and perhaps improved oxygen concentrations in the deeper profundal zone at decreasing turbidity are responsible for the observed habitat shift. The results indicate that fish respond rapidly to changes in nutrient state, both in terms of community structure and habitat use.  相似文献
