The influence of low temperature on the operation of the xanthophyll cycle and energy dissipation activity, as ascertained through measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence, was examined in two broad-leaved evergreen species, Vinca minor L. and Euonymus kiautschovicus Loessner. In leaves examined under laboratory conditions, energy dissipation activity developed more slowly at lower leaf temperatures, but the final, steady-state level of such activity was greater at lower temperatures where the rate of energy utilization (through photosynthetic electron transport) was much lower. The rate at which energy dissipation activity increased was similar to that of the de-epoxidation of violaxanthin to antheraxanthin and zea-xanthin at different temperatures. However, leaves in the field examined prior to sunrise on mornings following cold days and nights exhibited a retention of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin that was associated with sustained decreases in photosystem II efficiency. We therefore suggest that this phenomenon of ‘photoinhibition’ in response to light and cold temperatures during the winter results from sustained photoprotective thermal energy dissipation associated with the xanthophyll cycle. Such retention of the de-epoxidized components of the xanthophyll cycle responded to day-to-day changes in temperature, being greatest on the coldest mornings (when photoprotective energy dissipation might be most required) and less on warmer mornings when photosynthesis could presumably proceed at higher rates. 相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The tnierodistribution of Gammarus species is size assortative: larger animals are associated with larger substrate particles. Using an artificial stream with scrubbed substrate we investigate the hypothesis that the assortative mechanism is stimulated by current avoidance rather than food searching.
2. In uniformly mixed substrate, G. pulex tend to move upstream, but in patchy substrate they are found in a predictable substrate grade. There is no discrimination between patches by different size classes of G. pulex in static water. The size assortative field pattern can only be reproduced under flow conditions in the laboratory. It occurs in the absence of food and irrespective of the sequence or location of substrate patches.
3. As density increases, G. pulex are displaced from the optimal patches but move into the open stream rather than into the cover of alternative patch types.

In field experiments seed tubers affected with powdery scab cankers were planted and the effect on disease incidence of timing of irrigation and some seed-tuber fungicides was investigated over 3 yr. For 2 yr, irrigation to maintain soil wetter than—20 centibars (—20 kPa) during the first half of the growing season increased disease compared to unirrigated plots. Disease incidence was not affected by irrigation at 2 wk intervals or when applied during the second half of the season. Little disease developed in 1983 even in irrigated plots, probably because of high soil temperatures. None of the fungicides tested gave consistent disease control. Common scab and silver scurf were both decreased by irrigation but in two years, black dot was increased. The relative importance of black dot could increase in irrigated crops where fungicides are used to control silver scurf. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Granulosis virus-infected Trichoplusia ni (Hûbner) larvae exhibited an increased larval life span with no supernumerary moult and no pupation. Weight gain was not affected. Insects infected shortly after hatching were slower in reaching the fourth and fifth stadia than were control insects. Haemolymph ecdysteroid titres were lower in virus-infected insects than control insects, but these differences were only significant ( P <0.05) in the fifth stadium. Electron microscopic examination of the pro thoracic glands revealed extensive granulosis virus infection, and glands from virus-infected insects produced no RIA-detectable ecdysteroids in vitro. Injection of 20-OII-ecdysone into virus-infected larvae at various concentrations and times did not induce pupation. 相似文献

In field experiments in 1981 and 1982, uninoculated seed tubers (cv. Désirée) and those inoculated with Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica at the rose (apical) or heel (stolon attachment) ends were planted at normal (35 cm) or double spacing; in additional plots, inoculated and uninoculated tubers were planted alternately. Inoculation, especially at the rose end, decreased plant height and sometimes resulted in blackleg symptoms. Individual plant yields were recorded at the end of the season. In plots of uniform seed type at normal spacing, inoculation decreased total yield compared with uninoculated by 12–13% (heel-end inoculation) or 26–40% (rose-end inoculation). At double spacing, yields increased compared with normal spacing by 44–58% (uninoculated or heel-end inoculation) or 30–39% (rose-end inoculation). When rose-end-inoculated and uninoculated seed tubers were planted alternately, inoculated plants yielded less and uninoculated plants more than in plots planted throughout with the same seed treatment. D -values of a heterofermentative beer spoilage lactobacillus were measured at 55°C, 60°C and 65°C in beers containing <0·05% to 4·4% v/v ethanol. Z -values for the different beers varied between 9·17 and 12·13°C. At each temperature an increase in ethanol reduced the measured D -value. The maximum, 5·01 min was observed in alcohol-free beer (<0·05%) at 55°C and the minimum, 0·31 min, at 60°C and 65°C in beer containing 4·4% ethanol. D -values could be increased by prior growth in the presence of ethanol. They could be reduced by adding ethanol to alcohol-free beer or by increasing its hop extract content. The flush technique that recently has come into use is probably the most satisfactory method available for measuring blood pressures in infants and is of great aid in diagnosis of diseases associated with hypertension or hypotension. Rheumatic fever occurs in native of Southern California and is a cause of death. The incidence of streptococcosis in Los Angeles is approximately equal to that in three other major cities in the United States where rheumatic fever is known to occur commonly. Manifestations of rheumatic fever may range from mild to severe. It is suggested that a greater percentage of patients in Southern California have symptoms of rheumatic fever that are more mild. Differentiation between prolonged, uncomplicated streptococcosis and rheumatic fever is a major problem. The judicious use of a battery of tests, acute phase reactants, on the same blood sample will frequently help to establish the diagnosis in borderline situations so common to Southern California. 相似文献
