Plantains (Musa spp., AAB group) are an important food crop and an integral component of the farming systems in the lowland humid forest zone of West and Central Africa. A group of 24 plantain cultivars, representing the major variability in West Africa, was evaluated for nine quantitative characters. The association between growth and yield parameters in this African plantain germplasm was examined to determine if the pattern of quantitative variation in inflorescence and vegetative traits agreed with taxonomic groupings based on inflorescence type and plant size. Phenotypic correlations between these traits were calculated. Giant cultivars were taller, their pseudostem thicker, and they flowered much later than medium-sized cultivars. Giant cultivars produced more foliage, resulting in heavier bunches with more hands and fruits. Groupings that resulted following principal component analysis (PCA) supported conventional taxonomic groupings of plantains. PC A was based mainly on time to flowering, pseudostem height, and number of fruits. The last two traits, in combination with the number of hermaphrodite flowers and the persistence of the male bud, sufficed to group plantain cultivars.  相似文献

Summary For 28 years, the survival up to fledging of Eider ducklings has been determined in the Dutch colony on Vlieland. On average 0.342 (0.001–1.528) ducklings per female fledged yearly. Within the ranges observed, the total number of ducklings that fledged seemed to be independent of the number of breeding females (range 800–2700) and the number of Herring Gulls in the study period. Indications were found of a sex-linked mortality occurring in some years. Correlations with a number of environmental factors suggested that low temperature in winter, high temperature at the end of May and the beginning of June, calm weather in May and June, and a high number of Herring Gulls were profitable for fledgling success. However, a stepwise multiple regression indicated only the temperature at the beginning of June as significant, explaining about 18 % of the total variance. The absence of a negative relation with breeding gull numbers confirms the interpretation of the role of the Herring Gull as a secondary mortality factor. Experiments showed that Goose Virus Hepatitis (syn. Goose Influenza or Goose Pest) was a primary cause of mortality among ducklings older than one week. The effect of diseases in the field was difficult to establish as diseased and weakened ducklings were usually eaten by gulls. A long-lasting fledgling failure was recorded from 1966 up to and including 1977. In the same period changes were noted in the biological systems in the North Sea.
Zusammenfassung In einer Eiderenten-Kolonie auf der holländischen Insel Vlieland wurden die Überlebensraten der Küken 28 Jahre lang erfaßt. Im Mittel wurden jährlich 0.342 (0.001–1.528) Küken pro Weibchen flügge. Die Gesamtzahl der Küken war offensichtlich von der Anzahl brütender Weibchen (800–2700) sowie der Anzahl der Silbermöwen unabhängig. In einigen Jahren gab es Anzeichen für eine geschlechtsabhängige Sterblichkeit. Beziehungen zwischen der Rate flügger Jungvögel und einigen Umweltparametern, wie niedriger Temperatur im Winter, hoher Temperatur Ende Mai bis Anfang Juni, windarmes Wetter im Mai und Juni sowie der Präsenz vieler Silbermöwen ließen sich aufzeigen. Eine stufenweise multiple Regression zeigte jedoch, daß nur die Temperatur Anfang Juni einen signifikanten Einfluß hatte. Das Fehlen einer negativen Korrelation mit der Anzahl brütendee Möwen stützt die Annahme, daß die Rolle dere Silbermöwe als zweitrangig einzustufen ist. Versuche belegten, daß der Virus der Gänsehepatitis die Sterblichkeit von mindestens eine Woche alten Kücken unmittelbar bestimmte. Der Einfluß von Krankheiten konnte im Feld nur bedingt festgestellt werden, weil Möwen kranke und geschwächte Kücken üblicherweise fressen. Ein anhaltender Tiefstand des Aufzuchterfolges von 1966 bis 1977 fiel zeitlich mit allgemeinen Veränderungen der biologischen Verhältnisse der Nordsee zusammen.

We recently reported that Adenosine-5′-triphosphate (ATP) is able to inhibit the inflammatory reaction in stimulated whole blood. Many diseases, in which inflammatory reactions are involved, are associated with oxidative stress. In the present study, we therefore, investigated the effect of ATP on cytokine release in stimulated whole blood under conditions of oxidative stress, as simulated by pre-incubation of blood with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In the presence of H2O2, ATP at concentrations of 100 and 300 μM inhibited Tumour Necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) release and stimulated IL-10 release in LPS-PHA stimulated whole blood. Moreover, electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements showed that ATP and its breakdown product Adenosine-5′-diphosphate (ADP) attenuated spin trap-hydroxyl radical adduct formation in the Fenton reaction. Our results demonstrate that even in circumstances of severe oxidative stress, ATP has marked anti-inflammatory properties in stimulated whole blood. Moreover, the inhibition of the hydroxyl radical ESR signal indicates a direct attenuation of oxidative stress by ATP.  相似文献

The Cam River mouth (Haiphong Province) is one of the main river mouths of the Red River System, which is one of the most important water resources in Northern Vietnam. Over the past 50 years, the strong socio-economic development in the area has caused a considerable contamination with heavy metals (Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and arsenic. In this study, the vertical and horizontal distributions of heavy metals and arsenic in sediments from the Cam River mouth were investigated. In addition, the history, origin, and degree of contamination were assessed. Normalized (with respect to Al) heavy metal and arsenic concentrations in sediment cores and absolute dates obtained from the 137Cs analysis were used to reconstruct the pollution history of the river mouth. As, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn concentrations increase rapidly by approximately two times or more from 1954 to 1975, and then remain nearly unchanged from 1975 until 2008, whereas Co, Cr, and Ni concentrations slightly increase from 1954 until 2008. In addition, background values for heavy metals and arsenic have also been determined with regard to the period before 1954. In the study area, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Mn, and Zn are evaluated as minorly enriched, whereas As and Pb are classified as moderately enriched. Generally, the anthropogenic activities in the Haiphong harbor and industrial zone locally contribute to the contamination by heavy metals and arsenic in the Cam River mouth.  相似文献

Establishing geochemical background concentrations to distinguish the natural background from anthropogenic concentrations of heavy metals in sediments and soils is necessary to develop guidelines for environmental legislation. Due to the fact that the background concentrations strongly depend on geological characteristics such as mineral composition, grain size distribution and organic matter content, several normalization methods have been developed. Empirical (geochemical), theoretical (statistical) and integrated methods (combining both empirical and theoretical methods) are the main approaches described in literature for determination of geochemical background concentrations. In this review paper, the different approaches as well as the main normalization methods for heavy metal concentrations in sediments and soils will be discussed. Both geochemical background concentrations and added risk level (maximum permissible addition) should be taken into account for setting up legal threshold limits. Moreover, different approaches to evaluate the pollution status of heavy metals in sediments and soils, from Sediment/Soil Quality Guidelines to quantitative indices (Geo-accumulation Index-Igeo, Enrichment Factor-EF, Pollution Load Index-PLI and Risk assessment Code-RAC) will be presented. Although guidelines to establish whether a sediment or soil is polluted or not are generally only related to total metal concentrations, the available/reactive pool i.e., availability/reactivity of metals should be taken into account for sediment/soil pollution assessment.  相似文献

We report the use of chemical derivatization with MALDI-MS/MS analysis for de novo sequence analysis. Using three frequently used homology-based search algorithms, we were able to identify more than 40 proteins from banana, a nonmodel plant with unsequenced genome. Furthermore, this approach allowed the identification of different isoforms. We also observed that the identification score obtained varied according to the position of the peptide sequences in the query using the MS-Blast algorithm.  相似文献

Two putative promoters from Australian banana streak badnavirus (BSV) isolates were analysed for activity in different plant species. In transient expression systems the My (2105 bp) and Cv (1322 bp) fragments were both shown to have promoter activity in a wide range of plant species including monocots (maize, barley, banana, millet, wheat, sorghum), dicots (tobacco, canola, sunflower, Nicotiana benthamiana, tipu tree), gymnosperm (Pinus radiata) and fern (Nephrolepis cordifolia). Evaluation of the My and Cv promoters in transgenic sugarcane, banana and tobacco plants demonstrated that these promoters could drive high-level expression of either the green fluorescent protein (GFP) or the -glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene (uidA) in vegetative plant cells. In transgenic sugarcane plants harbouring the Cv promoter, GFP expression levels were comparable or higher (up to 1.06% of total soluble leaf protein as GFP) than those of plants containing the maize ubiquitin promoter (up to 0.34% of total soluble leaf protein). GUS activities in transgenic in vitro-grown banana plants containing the My promoter were up to seven-fold stronger in leaf tissue and up to four-fold stronger in root and corm tissue than in plants harbouring the maize ubiquitin promoter. The Cv promoter showed activities that were similar to the maize ubiquitin promoter in in vitro-grown banana plants, but was significantly reduced in larger glasshouse-grown plants. In transgenic in vitro-grown tobacco plants, the My promoter reached activities close to those of the 35S promoter of cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV), while the Cv promoter was about half as active as the CaMV 35S promoter. The BSV promoters for pregenomic RNA represent useful tools for the high-level expression of foreign genes in transgenic monocots.  相似文献

Summary Plant genetic transformation technologies rely upon the selection and recovery of transformed cells. Selectable marker genes used so far have been either antibiotic resistance genes or herbicide tolerance genes. There is a need to apply alternative principles of selection, as more transgenic traits have to be incorporated into a transgenic crop and because of concern that the use of conventional marker genes may pose a threat to humans and the environment. New classes of marker genes are now available, conferring metabolic advantage of the transgenic cells over the non-transformed cells. The new selection systems, as described in this review, are being used with success and superior performance over the traditional marker systems.  相似文献

Fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) was used to determine the number and distribution of the 18S-25S and 5S rDNA sites on mitotic chromosomes of 6 wild and 2 edible diploid (2n=22) accessions belonging to the two banana species, Musa acuminata and M. balbisiana. FISH with the 18S-25S probe resulted in signals on one pair of chromosomes, the position of signals corresponded to the secondary constriction at the end of a short arm. The intensity of labelling was different between the homologues and the larger site corresponded to a larger secondary constriction. This labelling pattern was observed consistently in all genotypes. On the other hand, differences in the number of 5S sites were observed between the accessions. While in some of the wild seeded species, the 5S rDNA was localised on two pairs of chromosomes, hybridisation signals appeared on three pairs of chromosomes in other wild accessions. Quite unexpectedly, only five sites of 5S rDNA were reproducibly observed in the two vegetatively propagated diploid edible cultivars, Pisang Mas and Niyarma Yik, evidence for structural heterozygosity. A dual colour FISH showed that in all accessions, the satellite chromosomes carrying the 18S-25S loci did not carry the 5S loci. The results demonstrate that molecular cytogenetics can be applied to Musa and that physical cytogenetic maps can be generated.
