Kinetics of serotonin in platelets in essential hypertension.

In a study of the kinetics of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in platelets in 26 hypertensive subjects with a mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure of 153.9 +/- 26.9 and 106.9 +/- 9.1 mm Hg respectively, it has been observed that in hypertensive platelets there was a marked decrease in 5-HT uptake and content, an increase in 5-HT efflux and an accompanying increase in Plasma 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels. Regression analysis of the data indicated a significant correlation between rise in diastolic blood pressure and these changes in 5-HT kinetics.     

Effect of hypocholesterolemic agents of plant origin on catecholamine biosynthesis in normal and cholesterol fed rabbits

The effect of lipid lowering agents of plant origin garlic oil and guggulipid on the levels of catecholamine and dopamine Β-hydroxylase activity of normal and cholesterol fed rabbit tissues has been studied. The catecholamine levels and enzyme activity were found to be decreased in cholesterol (500 mg/kg body wt) fed animals. The feeding of garlic oil (5 mg/kg body wt) and guggulipid (100 mg/kg body wt) an exudate ofCommiphora mukul, to normal rabbits caused significant increase in the dopamine-Β-hydroxylase activity and catecholamine levels, while the feed helped the hypercholesterolemic rabbits to recover the decrease in catecholamine biosynthesis C.D.R.I. Communication No. 3435.     

Synthesis of novel steroidal D-ring substituted isoxazoline derivatives of 17-oxoandrostanes

A facile synthesis of isoxazoline derivatives of 17-oxoandrostane at the side chain of D-ring is reported. The scheme involves the transformation of the starting dehydroepiandrosterone acetate (ketone) to the Knoevenegel product, reduction to the nitrile, and elimination to the carboxaldehyde. Cycloaddition of nitrileoxides across olefinic aldehyde intermediate led to the synthesis of novel side chain isoxazoline derivatives.     

Biosorption of dyes using dead macro fungi: effect of dye structure, ionic strength and pH

Biosorbents prepared from dead macro fungi, namely Fomes fomentarius and Phellinus igniarius, were applied for the uptake of Methylene Blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RB). Equilibrium isotherm data could be well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Methylene Blue was found to be more adsorbable than Rhodamine B. Langmuir monolayer coverage was determined as 204.38-232.73 mg/g and 25.12-36.82 mg/g for MB and RB, respectively. Molecular structure and ionic radius of dyes were found to be responsible for differences in their uptakes. Results showed that sorption of MB increased while that of RB decreased as pH of respective dye solutions changed from 3 to 11. An increase in ionic strength also exhibited an adverse effect on dye sorption capacity. Ionic strength and pH affected the sorption of MB more as compared to the sorption of RB. The presence of carboxylic (-ve) and amino (+ve) groups in RB could explain the lower sorption of RB compared to MB.
