In Victoria, Australia, both dryland salinity and salinity in irrigation regions are serious agricultural problems. One option
to control the latter is to pump groundwater to maintain it below the surface. However, this leaves a saline wastewater for
disposal, probably into local streams or wetlands. This review of the salt sensitivity of the biota of Australian streams
and wetlands gives information of interest to those responsible for developing controls on these discharges. The review addresses
the lethal and sub-lethal effects of salinity on microbes (mainly bacteria), macrophytes and micro-algae, riparian vegetation,
invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds. Data suggest that direct adverse biological effects are likely
to occur in Australian river, stream and wetland ecosystems if salinity is increased to around 1 000 mg L−1. The review highlights a general lack of data on the sensitivity of freshwater plants and animals to salinity increases. 相似文献

We aimed to determine whether the copepod assemblages in lakes and ponds of northern Québec, Canada, were closer in composition to those found in southern Québec, or to those reported from the subarctic and arctic. Six calanoid and five cyclopoid species were identified from 37 ponds and lakes located in the region between 55° N and 59° N. Species diversity was generally low, ranging from 0 to 4 species per lake. Dominant species were Leptodiaptomus minutus and Acanthocyclops vernalis. The species assemblages showed high affinity with those found in forested regions of southern Québec. Exceptions were Leptodiaptomus tyrrelli, previously only recorded west of Hudson Bay, and Hesperodiaptomus arcticus, hitherto recorded north of 58° N. Relationships between the lakes, species, and environmental variables were explored using multivariate analysis. Lakes situated along the coast and on two offshore islands clustered together and were characterised by higher conductivity and pH than those lakes located further inland. Leptodiaptomus tyrrelli was common in these coastal lakes. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed statistically significant relationships between copepod distributions and conductivity, dissolved organic carbon and pH. These three variables accounted for 70% of the variation in the species' distribution. 相似文献

The presence of crustaceans in some Antarctic lakes adds a level of complexity to the food webs of these environments. The
grazing pressure of the crustaceans on phytoplankton and other protists, and the role they play in controlling food web structure,
has not yet been examined in any detail. This paper presents the first data on grazing pressure of crustacean zooplankton
in continental Antarctic lakes. In this study the grazing rates of Paralabidocera antarctica in saline Ace Lake, Vestfold Hills, were assessed using a radio-tracer method. Clearance rates ranged from approximately
1 to 8 ml ind.−1 day−1, depending on developmental stage. Due to their high abundance, nauplii exhibited the highest daily carbon ingestion rates.
The population cleared about 3% of the water column per day, accounting for a significant fraction of primary production.
P. antarctica has a considerable impact on the carbon cycle in Ace Lake and, by inference, in the other lakes in which it occurs.

parthenogenetically by the production of ameiotic subitaneous eggs. This note reports the presence of male D. studeri and the production of ephippial (sexual) eggs in a number of lakes of the Vestfold and Larsemann Hills, which indicate the

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the power to improve our lives through a wide variety of applications, many of which fall into the healthcare space; however, a lack of diversity is contributing to limitations in how broadly AI can help people. The UCSF AI4ALL program was established in 2019 to address this issue by targeting high school students from underrepresented backgrounds in AI, giving them a chance to learn about AI with a focus on biomedicine, and promoting diversity and inclusion. In 2020, the UCSF AI4ALL three-week program was held entirely online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, students participated virtually to gain experience with AI, interact with diverse role models in AI, and learn about advancing health through AI. Specifically, they attended lectures in coding and AI, received an in-depth research experience through hands-on projects exploring COVID-19, and engaged in mentoring and personal development sessions with faculty, researchers, industry professionals, and undergraduate and graduate students, many of whom were women and from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds. At the conclusion of the program, the students presented the results of their research projects at the final symposium. Comparison of pre- and post-program survey responses from students demonstrated that after the program, significantly more students were familiar with how to work with data and to evaluate and apply machine learning algorithms. There were also nominally significant increases in the students’ knowing people in AI from historically underrepresented groups, feeling confident in discussing AI, and being aware of careers in AI. We found that we were able to engage young students in AI via our online training program and nurture greater diversity in AI. This work can guide AI training programs aspiring to engage and educate students entirely online, and motivate people in AI to strive towards increasing diversity and inclusion in this field. 相似文献

The ruminal bacterium Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens is being engineered by the introduction of heterologous xylanase genes in an attempt to improve the utilization of plant material in ruminants. However, relatively little is known about the diversity and distribution of the native xylanase genes in strains of B. fibrisolvens. In order to identify the most appropriate hosts for such modifications, the xylanase genotypes of 28 strains from the three 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) subgroups of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens have been investigated. Only 4 of the 20 strains from 16S rDNA group 2 contained homologues of the strain Bu49 xynA gene. However, these four xynA-containing strains, and two other group 2 strains, contained members of a second xylanase gene family clearly related to xynA (subfamily I). Homologues of xynB, a second previously described xylanase gene from B. fibrisolvens, were identified only in three of the seven group 1 strains and not in the group 2 and 3 strains. However, six of the group 1 strains contained one or more members of the two subfamilies of homologues of xynA. The distribution of genes and the nucleotide sequence relationships between the members of the two xynA subfamilies are consistent with the progenitor of all strains of B. fibrisolvens having contained a xynA subfamily I gene. Since many xylanolytic strains of B. fibrisolvens did not contain members of either of the xynA subfamilies or of the xynB family, at least one additional xylanase gene family remains to be identified in B. fibrisolvens. 相似文献

There is now considerable evidence that, as the climate continues to warm, bushfires are becoming more common and severe, particularly in regions such as south-eastern Australia. The extraordinary Australian bushfires over the summer of 2019/2020 resulted in the burning of habitats such as highland peat swamps and intertidal estuarine wetlands over unprecedented spatial scales. Across New South Wales, these bushfires affected 183 ha of saltmarshes and 23 ha of mangroves in 19 estuaries. The percentage of fire-affected saltmarsh ranged from 51% to 81% in the worst impacted estuaries, although typically ≤15% of mapped saltmarsh was damaged. Just over 50% of mangroves were burnt in Wonboyn Lake (although this constituted <0.2 ha), whereas in all other estuaries, ≤5% of mangroves were burnt. At the state-wide scale, the likelihood of saltmarshes being affected by fire was unrelated to adjacent terrestrial vegetation; however, mangroves adjacent to burnt wet sclerophyll forest were more likely to burn than not. Burnt mangroves were almost exclusively associated with extreme or high severity fires in adjacent terrestrial vegetation, yet saltmarshes were also impacted in some cases by moderate or low-intensity fires. Many species of saltmarsh plants had re-sprouted or germinated after 6–24 months, but the extent of any recovery or changes in species composition were not quantified. The majority of fire-affected mangrove trees appeared to be dead 24 months after the fires, despite observations of epicormic growth on some trees after six months. Bushfire impacts to estuarine wetlands are likely to become more frequent and results from our work can help target hazard reduction burning that might be considered for minimising damage to mangroves. More work is required to better understand potential longer term impacts and the capacity for natural recovery of estuarine wetlands from bushfires. 相似文献
