Role of the body in primary signal processing by the electroreceptor system of the skate

Using a mathematical modeling technique, possible spatial mechanisms of processing information by the ampullae of Lorenzini were investigated in the skate during detection of the dipole electric field corresponding in the first approximation to the bioelectric fields of marine vertebrates and invertebrates. Stationary voltage distribution in the inhomogeneous environment was calculated numerically. An unlimited volume of seawater was used as the environment into which a slim disk was placed simulating the body of the fish, which served to create inhomogeneity. When the dipole axis was on the same plane as the disk, distortion in the voltage distribution was negligible. On occasions when the dipole was perpendicular to the plane of the disk, the electrical field energy absorbed by ampullary groups decreased significantly. Calculations suggested that by reorienting its body the fish is able to phase out signals coming from dipoles with their axes on different planes from that of the skate's body.I. P. Study of the antigenic structure of human immunodeficiency virus using synthetic peptides]

In a search for synthetic peptide antigens fit to detect anti-HIV antibodies, a set of algorithms were used to predict the probable antigenic determinants of gag, pol, env and nef proteins of HIV-1 and HIV-2. Over forty peptides were synthesized by the solid-phase method. The reactivity of the peptide antigens was evaluated in ELISA on panels of HIV-1/2-positive sera. Application of the synthetic peptides for the early HIV diagnostics was examined.

Specific features of source-sink relations in alloplasmic hybrid of winter wheat with alien cytoplasm of goatgrass with emphasis on resistance to low temperature stress

We studied the influence of alien cytoplasm of spring goatgrass Aegilops ovata L. on some physiological parameters in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), Mironovskaya 808, under normal conditions and in the case of modified source-sink relations. Measurements of relative rates of plant dry matter growth and its distribution among organs, CO₂ exchange (photosynthesis upon light saturation and dark respiration), content of sugars (sucrose + glucose + fructose) and their ratio in leaves, frost hardiness, and indices of membrane stability and damage of leaves by frost have shown that, on average, alloplasmic hybrid differed from the initial cultivar by almost all parameters. Reduced frost hardiness, increased index of leaf damage by frost, lowered leaf content of sugars, and reduced sucrose/(glucose + fructose) ratio in the alloplasmic hybrid were combined with higher roots/leaves ratio, relative rate of dry matter growth, and photosynthesis and respiration rates. The alloplasmic hybrid was more tolerant to decreased source strength in source-sink relations as compared to the initial cultivar.

The level of lymphocytes in the peripheral blood as a criterion of the degree of severity of acute radiation sickness (based on materials from the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station)

A study was made of the peripheral blood lymphocyte level as a function of gamma-radiation dose after single gamma-radiation attack resulted from Chernobyl disaster. After the initial drop an average level of lymphocytes was stabilized by day 2 after exposure and no further systematic decrease in the number of lymphocytes occurred. The accuracy of prognostication of the severity of acute radiation sickness, determined by the average lymphocyte level on days 3-6 amounted to as low as 50%. However, when the neighbouring, by the severity, groups of patients were taken into account, the accuracy was 88%.     

Search of tandem repeats with insertion and deletions in the <Emphasis Type="Italic">A. thaliana</Emphasis> genome

A new mathematical method was used for the first time to search for tandem repeats with insertions and deletions in the full-length sequence of the A. thaliana genome. The method is based on a new algorithm for multiple alignment of sequences of certain periods without using paired comparisons of sequences. We identified 13997 periodic sites 2 to 50 characters long, only approximately 30% of which were known earlier. The possible origin and use of the identified sites with tandem repeats are discussed.
