The hormones 17β-estradiol, 17α-hydroxy-20β-dihydroprogesterone(17α, 20β-P), 11-ketotestosterone, testosterone, gonadotropin and also vitellogenin, were determined during the spawning migration of wild pink salmon in the Fraser and Thompson Rivers in British Columbia. This stock of pink salmon takes approximately 2 weeks to migrate the 333 km upstream to the spawning grounds. Both sexes were at an advanced stage of sexual development when they entered fresh water. In females both the 17β-estradiol and vitellogenin levels fell precipitously during the migration, to be very low at spawning, whereas the 17α,20β-P level rose rapidly, to be highest at arrival on the spawning grounds. The gonadotropin level also rose rapidly during the migration, and was highest in spent fish. Testosterone was at a high level throughout, although this level decreased steadily during migration. In many respects similar endocrine changes were observed in the male. For example, in the case of androgen levels, both testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone fell steadily during migration but were still relatively high at spawning, whereas both gonadotropin and 17α, 20β-P levels rose markedly as migration progress. However, although the qualitative changes were often similar between the sexes, the levels of 17α, 20β-P, testosterone, and gonadotropin were considerably higher throughout in females than in males. It is concluded that this stock of pink salmon is at an advanced stage of sexual development when it enters fresh water. The endocrine changes observed during this study represent those controlling the final stages of reproduction, specifically final oocyte maturation and ovulation in females, and the final stages of spermatogenesis and spermiation in males.  相似文献

Bacterial transport systems are traditionally treated as enzymes exhibiting a saturable binding site giving rise to an apparent K(m)of transport, whereas the maximal rate of transport is regarded equivalent to the V(max)of enzymatic reactions. Thus, the Michaelis-Menten theory is usually applied in the analysis of transport data and K(m)and V(max)are derived from the treatment of data obtained from the rate of transport at varying substrate concentrations. Such an analysis tacitly assumes that the substrate recognition site of the transport system is freely accessible to substrate. However, this is not always the case. In systems endowed with high affinity in the micro M range or those recognizing large substrates or those exhibiting high V(max), the diffusion through the outer membrane may become rate determining, particularly at low external substrate concentrations. In such a situation the dependence of the overall rate of transport (from the medium into the cytoplasm) on the substrate concentration in the medium will no longer follow Michaelis-Menten kinetics. By analysing the deviation of transport data from the corresponding ideal Michaelis-Menten plot we developed a method that allows us to determine diffusion limitation through the outer membrane. The method allows us to find the correct K(m)of the transport system functioning at the inner membrane even under conditions of strong diffusion limitation through the outer membrane. The model was tested and validified with the Escherichia coli binding protein-dependent ABC transporter for maltose. The corresponding systems for sn -glycerol-3-phospate of Escherichia coli and the alpha -cyclodextrin transport of Klebsiella oxitoca were used as test systems.  相似文献

In contrast to HIV-infected humans, naturally SIV-infected sooty mangabeys (SMs) very rarely progress to AIDS. Although the mechanisms underlying this disease resistance are unknown, a consistent feature of natural SIV infection is the absence of the generalized immune activation associated with HIV infection. To define the correlates of preserved CD4(+) T cell counts in SMs, we conducted a cross-sectional immunological study of 110 naturally SIV-infected SMs. The nonpathogenic nature of the infection was confirmed by an average CD4(+) T cell count of 1,076 +/- 589/mm(3) despite chronic infection with a highly replicating virus. No correlation was found between CD4(+) T cell counts and either age (used as a surrogate marker for length of infection) or viremia. The strongest correlates of preserved CD4(+) T cell counts were a low percentage of circulating effector T cells (CD28(-)CD95(+) and/or IL-7R/CD127(-)) and a high percentage of CD4(+)CD25(+) T cells. These findings support the hypothesis that the level of immune activation is a key determinant of CD4(+) T cell counts in SIV-infected SMs. Interestingly, we identified 14 animals with CD4(+) T cell counts of <500/mm(3), of which two show severe and persistent CD4(+) T cell depletion (<50/mm(3)). Thus, significant CD4(+) T cell depletion does occasionally follow SIV infection of SMs even in the context of generally low levels of immune activation, lending support to the hypothesis of multifactorial control of CD4(+) T cell homeostasis in this model of infection. The absence of AIDS in these "CD4(low)" naturally SIV-infected SMs defines a protective role of the reduced immune activation even in the context of a significant CD4(+) T cell depletion.  相似文献

Members of social groups need to coordinate their behaviour when choosing between alternative activities. Consensus decisions enable group members to maintain group cohesion and one way to reach consensus is to rely on quorums. A quorum response is where the probability of an activity change sharply increases with the number of individuals supporting the new activity. Here, we investigated how meerkats (Suricata suricatta) use vocalizations in the context of movement decisions. Moving calls emitted by meerkats increased the speed of the group, with a sharp increase in the probability of changing foraging patch when the number of group members joining the chorus increased from two up to three. These calls had no apparent effect on the group's movement direction. When dominant individuals were involved in the chorus, the group's reaction was not stronger than when only subordinates called. Groups only increased speed in response to playbacks of moving calls from one individual when other group members emitted moving calls as well. The voting mechanism linked to a quorum probably allows meerkat groups to change foraging patches cohesively with increased speed. Such vocal coordination may reflect an aggregation rule linking individual assessment of foraging patch quality to group travel route.  相似文献

Spatially explicit individual-based models are widely used in ecology but they are often difficult to treat analytically. Despite their intractability they often exhibit clear temporal and spatial patterning. We demonstrate how a spatially explicit individual-based model of scramble competition with local dispersal can be approximated by a stochastic coupled map lattice. The approximation disentangles the deterministic and stochastic element of local interaction and dispersal. We are thus able to understand the individual-based model through a simplified set of equations. In particular, we demonstrate that demographic noise leads to increased stability in the dynamics of locally dispersing single-species populations. The coupled map lattice approximation has general application to a range of spatially explicit individual-based models. It provides a new alternative to current approximation techniques, such as the method of moments and reaction-diffusion approximation, that captures both stochastic effects and large-scale patterning arising in individual-based models.  相似文献

1. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) exerts considerable control on U.K. weather. This study investigates the impact of the NAO on butterfly abundance and phenology using 34 years of data from the U.K. Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS).2. The study uses a multi-species indicator to show that the NAO does not affect overall U.K. butterfly population size. However, the abundance of bivoltine butterfly species, which have longer flight seasons, were found to be more likely to respond positively to the NAO compared with univoltine species, which show little or a negative response.3. A positive winter NAO index is associated with warmer weather and earlier flight dates for Anthocharis cardamines (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), Melanargia galathea (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), Aphantopus hyperantus (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), Pyronia tithonus (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), Lasiommata megera (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) and Polyommatus icarus (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae). In bivoltine species, the NAO affects the phenology of the first generation, the timing of which indirectly controls the timing of the second generation.4. The NAO influences the timing of U.K. butterfly flight seasons more strongly than it influences population size.  相似文献

Rapidly spreading infectious diseases are a serious risk to public health. The dynamics and the factors causing outbreaks of these diseases can be better understood using mathematical models, which are fit to data. Here we investigate the dynamics of a Hepatitis E outbreak in the Kitgum region of northern Uganda during 2007 to 2009. First, we use the data to determine that [Formula: see text] is approximately 2.25 for the outbreak. Secondly, we use a model to estimate that the critical level of latrine and bore hole coverages needed to eradicate the epidemic is at least [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] respectively. Lastly, we further investigate the relationship between the co-infection factor for malaria and Hepatitis E on the value of [Formula: see text] for Hepatitis E. Taken together, these results provide us with a better understanding of the dynamics and possible causes of Hepatitis E outbreaks.  相似文献
