Response of lentil to VA Mycorrhizal inoculation and plant available P levels of unsterile soils

Summary Responses of lentil in unsterile soils at low, medium and high levels of plant available soil P toGlomus fasciculatum inoculation were evaluated. It was observed that growth, dry matter accumulation, nodulation, and nitrogen fixation were considerably improved in VAM inoculated plants over uninoculated control at low and medium levels of plant available soil P.     

Thorium induced testicular changes in rats.

Daily intraperitoneal administration of thorium nitrate produced progressive morphological and biochemical alterations with the increase in thorium concentration in rat testis. The degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules increased with the duration of treatment and after 90 days calcification occurred in about 25% of the tubules and in the connective tissue of the tunica albuginea. The activity of adenosine triphosphatase and alkaline phosphatase increased markedly as a result of thorium administration. An attempt has been made to interrelate histopathological and enzymatic changes and the metal concentration in the testicular tissue.     

In vitro regeneration of plants from hypocotyl segments of Amaranthus paniculatus

Hypocotyl segments, 5 to 8 mm length from 4 to 7 day old seedlings, callused on B₅ medium supplemented with Kn (0.5 ppm) and NAA (0.1 ppm). Even without transfer, shoots were formed in such cultures. About 20% of the cultures produced multiple shoots. In medium with 1 ppm each of Kn and NAA direct shoots were formed at one end of the hypocotyl segment and callusing was initiated at the other end. Operations for portal hypertension due to extrahepatic obstruction: results and 10 year follow up.

Between 1976 and 1984, 136 patients with portal hypertension due to extrahepatic obstruction were operated on. Twenty two patients had emergency and 114 elective operations. The operative mortality was 9% and 1%, respectively. Altogether 117 patients (86%) were followed up for from two to 10 years: 17 rebled, none developed encephalopathy or sepsis after splenectomy, and 90% and 75% were alive at five and 10 years respectively. Unlike endoscopic sclerotherapy and treatment with propranolol, operative treatment of variceal bleeding can usually be completed during one admission and carries a low mortality and a fairly low morbidity. Operation seems to be the best form of treatment for poor patients living far from medical facilities in developing countries and may be the treatment of choice in developed countries as well.     

Ascorbic acid levels in the proglottides of four species of cestode parasites of mammals and birds in relation to their sexual maturity

Ascorbic acid levels were found to be closely related to different stages of growth and maturity of Avitellina centripunctata, Moniezia expansa, and Stilesia globipunctata from goats and sheep and of Raillietina echinobothrida from fowl. The ascorbic acid level in avian parasites was higher than that in mammalian. The level was highest in immature proglottides and lowest in gravid proglottides.     

Photo-osmosis through liquid membrane bilayers generated by bacteriorhodopsin

Liquid membrane bilayers, generated by bacteriorhodopsin on a supporting membrane, exhibit photo osmosis. The phenomenon has been shown to be a consequence of light-induced electrical potential differences which develop across the liquid membrane bilayer due to the light-driven proton pumping action of bacteriorhodopsin. The variations of photo osmotic velocity with wavelength, intensity of light, and proton acceptor concentrations has been studied.     

Effects on pregnancy in mice of passive immunization against ovine LH and human chorionic gonadotrophin

Mice given daily i.p. injections of immunoglobulins against ovine LH on Days 3-7 of pregnancy were devoid of implantation sites on Day 8 whereas mice treated with antibodies to hCG had embryos of normal number and appearance on Day 8. These antibody treatments reduced the mean +/- s.d. serum progesterone concentrations from 65.4 +/- 15.3 ng/ml (control globulins) to 8.6 +/- 4.9 ng/ml (anti-LH) and 9.2 +/- 3.1 ng/ml (anti-hCG) on Day 8 and had no differential effect on serum oestrogen levels on Day 4. However, the mice treated with anti-hCG did not litter; resorption of the embryos took place between Days 10 and 14 of pregnancy. Indirect immunofluorescence and quantitative immunoenzymic assays showed the presence of anti-ovine LH and anti-hCG reacting antigens in the mouse feto-placental unit. On Day 6, the values of reacting antigens (mean +/- s.d. absorbance units/10 micron section of embryo) were 0.050 +/- 0.002 with control globulins, 0.059 +/- 0.002 with anti-hCG-Ig and 0.196 +/- 0.018 with anti-LH-Ig; the corresponding values on Day 12 were 0.075 +/- 0.009, 0.402 +/- 0.02 and 0.416 +/- 0.015. The quantitative disposition of the reacting antigens to the two types of anti-gonadotrophins seems to bear a temporal relationship to their respective antifertility action. The pregnancy terminating action of immunoglobulins to ovine LH (Days 6, 7 & 8) and hCG (Days 8, 9 & 10) was counteracted by administration of 2 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate on Days 6, 9 and 12, indicating the importance of progesterone in the maintenance of pregnancy in the mouse.     

Levonorgestrel as a new radioligand for determination of sex hormone binding globulin in human plasma

Levonorgestrel which binds with high affinity to SHBG, is suggested as a new radioligand for estimation of SHBG in human plasma. Using 3H-levonorgestrel as a ligand, a number of samples from men, women pregnant and non-pregnant were analysed. The SHBG content was lowest in men, low in women and rose to higher level during pregnancy. The results of the present study suggest that levonorgestrel appears to be a better ligand than dihydrotestosterone for measuring SHBG.     

Relationship between calcium and agar on vitrification and shoot-tip necrosis of quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) shoots in vitro

Shoot-tip cultures of Quince C (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) initiated on Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium containing 5 M BA and 0.6% Phytagar showed both shoot-tip necrosis and severe vitrification. Culturing explants on medium containing 1.2% Phytagar and Ca levels of 3 mM (MS medium), 18 mM and 30 mM showed a decrease in growth with increasing medium Ca levels, being especially severe at 30 mM. The Ca content of the explants increased linearly with increasing medium Ca. Culturing explants on medium containing 3 mM, 9 mM, and 18 mM Ca at 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2% agar resulted in reduction in growth, shoot-tip necrosis, and vitrification when either factor was increased. The reduction in shoot-tip necrosis could be accounted for primarily by an increase in medium Ca levels but may also be affected by a change in explant growth. Increasing Ca concentration in the medium resulted in a linear increase in explant K, Ca, Mg, and B levels and a decrease in Mn and Na. Although increasing medium Ca or agar levels reduced vitrification, it is unclear whether they were the direct cause of the reduction in vitrification or whether this response was an effect of the reduction in culture fresh weight.Approved by publication by the Director, West Virginia Agriculture anf Forestry Experimental Station as Scientific Article No. 2199
