Identification of the sex pheromone of Ostrinia palustralis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
By means of gas chromatography with electroantennographic detection, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and a series of bioassays, (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:OAc) and (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14:OAc) at a ratio of 99:1 were identified as female sex pheromone components of Ostrinia palustralis. The average amounts of E11- 14:OAc and Z11-14:OAc in a single sex pheromone gland were 37.2±24.4 ng and 0.3±0.2 ng, respectively. In a wind-tunnel bioassay, the binary blend of E11- and Z11-14:OAc elicited the same male behavioral responses as did virgin females.  相似文献

Inheritance patterns of female sex pheromone production and male behavioral response were studied in Ostrinia orientalis. Results showed that the production of the female sex pheromone in O. orientalis was mainly controlled by a single autosomal factor, while the male behavioral response was controlled by a sex‐linked major gene.  相似文献

The small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus, immigrates annually into Japan over the East China Sea from the Asian mainland. It is not known whether this long-distance dispersal has any effect on the genetic structure of Japanese L. striatellus populations. The dispersal of L. striatellus is suspected to be relevant to the population dynamics of infection with the parasitic bacterium Wolbachia, which causes cytoplasmic incompatibility in L. striatellus. Wolbachia infection has spread within and among Japanese L. striatellus populations due to this cytoplasmic incompatibility. In the present study, the geographic differences among 11 L. striatellus populations from Japan and Taiwan was investigated using allozyme polymorphism. FST values on three enzyme loci (GPI, PGM, and AK) indicated a geographically differentiated population structure. Significant differentiation was found even among populations located along the course of the long-distance dispersal. The results indicated that long-range dispersal of L. striatellus does not occur regularly over the main islands of Japan and that it does not have a large effect on the population structure of L. striatellus. This conclusion is in agreement with the geographically variable life history of L. striatellus adapted to local climates. The short-term rice stripe epidemic, which is vectored by L. striatellus, in northwestern Kyushu, Japan, during 1985 and 1986 corresponds to these results. Based on the present findings, short-distance dispersal was considered to drive the spatial spread of Wolbachia infection among L. striatellus populations.  相似文献

The twisted-wing parasite Elenchus japonicus is a major parasitoid of rice planthoppers (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), including the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens, the white-backed planthopper Sogatella furcifera, and the small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus. Another Elenchus species, E. yasumatsui, which is considered to be synonymous with E. japonicus, has also been described in southern Asia. However, limited biological and molecular data on this important parasitoid of rice planthoppers are available. In this study, E. japonicas-stylopized planthoppers were obtained from various regions in Asia and Japan. Sequences of the nuclear 18S ribosomal RNA gene and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene of the strepsipterans were analyzed from 40 samples of E. japonicus: 14 from N. lugens, 6 from S. furcifera and 20 from L. striatellus. Sequence analysis of these samples revealed three genotypes of E. japonicus. Of the three types of E. japonicus, one was isolated only from L. striatellus from northern Japan. The other two types were found in all three rice planthopper species collected from a wide area in Asia. These results suggest that the three different genotypes of Elenchus can be associated with a particular geographical region and/or planthopper species. The relationship between two previously described Elenchus species and the present three genotypes needs to be elucidated.  相似文献

Specimens of ocean skaters Halobates were collected off the south coast of Japan in the East China Sea in 1995, and from the Kumano‐nada Sea to the East China Sea in 1998 and 1999. Three species were identified: H. micans, H. germanus and H. sericeus. We found two species co‐occurring in comparable densities in different years, a phenomenon not hitherto reported in other regions of the ocean. We discuss distributions of the three Halobates species with special reference to the influence of the Kuroshio Current, temporal variations of sea‐surface temperature, and monsoonal winds.  相似文献

The sex pheromone blend of the butterbur borer, Ostrinia zaguliaevi (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was analyzed by means of gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD), GC-mass spectrometry and a series of wind-tunnel bioassays. Four EAD-active compounds were detected in the female sex pheromone gland extract, and these were identified as tetradecyl acetate (14:OAc), (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:OAc), (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:OAc) and (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14:OAc). The average amounts ± s.d. of the four compounds in a single sex pheromone gland were 7.9±3.7 ng, 10.1±3.2 ng, 1.1±0.5 ng and 11.6±5.1 ng, respectively. In a wind-tunnel bioassay, the ternary blend of Z9-, E11- and Z11-14:OAc at a ratio found in the sex pheromone gland (45:5:50) elicited the same behavioral responses from the males as did virgin females and pheromone gland extract. Removal of any single compound from the ternary blend significantly diminished the pheromonal activity, whereas addition of 14:OAc to the ternary blend had no effect on the males' behavioral responses. Therefore, it was concluded that the sex pheromone blend of O. zaguliaevi is composed of Z9-14:OAc, E11-14:OAc and Z11-14:OAc at a ratio of 45:5:50.  相似文献

We surveyed female-biased sex ratio traits (SR traits) in a moth, Ostrinia scapulalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) from six geographic locations in Japan. A small proportion (8.3%) of females showed the SR trait. About half of them were associated with a Wolbachia infection (SRw+), whereas the remaining ones were not (SRw-). No significant differences in frequencies were detected among locations and years for either SRw+ or SRw- females. In SRw+ matrilines, the SR trait was inherited. Curing the Wolbachia infection by tetracycline at the larval stages resulted in all-male broods in the next generation. These characteristics were identical to the Wolbachia-induced SR trait observed previously in the related species Ostrinia furnacalis. The Wolbachia strain in O. scapulalis was indistinguishable from that in O. furnacalis in terms of the wsp and ftsZ gene sequences, suggesting either that infection originated from a common ancestor of the two hosts or that Wolbachia was transmitted horizontally between the host species. In SRw- matrilines, on the other hand, the SR trait was not due to bacterial infection but some other maternally inherited element, since antibiotic treatment had no effect and bacterial PCR did not give the characteristic product. In these matrilines, the SR trait occasionally failed to show, suggesting the presence of nuclear factor(s) suppressing the SR trait.  相似文献

To contribute to the understanding of the genus Ostrinia (Lepidoptera; Pyralidae) in Japan, we collected larvae of Ostrinia spp. from known host plants and plants not recorded as hosts, and we examined the morphology and sex pheromones of the adults obtained. Consequently, the host plant ranges of the 7 Ostrinia spp. in Japan were clarified, and the sex pheromones of the 5 species O. scapulalis, O. zealis, O. zaguliaevi, O. palustralis and O. latipennis were identified in addition to that of the Asian corn borer O. furnacalis. The phylogenetic relationships of Japanese Ostrinia spp., with reference to the European corn borer O. nubilalis, are discussed based on these findings and results of molecular phylogenetic analyses.  相似文献

It has been widely assumed that the stepwise increase in the exoskeleton size of larval insects approximately follows a geometric progression from instar to instar, known as Dyar's Rule. However, it is not clear whether the per-instar increase in body size follows this rule. In insects, Dyar's Rule has been identified either by regressing the log-scaled size on the instar number (log-linear regression analysis) or by comparing the postmolt/premolt size ratio between instars (growth rate analysis). A previous study on the body mass of caterpillars showed the methodological pitfall that Dyar's Rule was statistically supported by log-linear regression analysis, but not at all by growth rates analysis. I considered this concern here by examining the per-stage growth rates of head and body sizes for larvae of the beetle Trypoxylus dichotomus using both methods and compared the resulting growth rates for body size within and between taxonomic orders. Dyar's Rule was statistically supported by the log-linear regression analysis but not by growth rate analysis for both the head and body sizes in T. dichotomus. The body size growth rate in T. dichotomus decreased as the instar progressed. This developmental pattern was also found in reported data for the other six scarabs, but not in data for Lepidoptera or Hymenoptera. These findings confirm that the per-stage growth rate of body size does not follow Dyar's Rule in a wide range of insects, and suggest that developmental change in the body size growth rate varies among insect groups.  相似文献
