In the present work the extent and variation of Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Hg loading in undisturbed surface soil (0–5 cm) and the vertical transport of the metals in soil profiles are studied in the vicinity of a zinc smelter in Norway. Three major controlling factors on the metal concentrations in soil have been assessed: 1) distance from the anthropogenic point source; 2) organic matter content (O.M.); and 3) the prevailing wind directions. Moreover metal distributions in proximal soil profiles in 1972 and 2003 are compared. Current concentrations of Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Hg in surface soil reach 14000, 60, 980, 430, and 7.0 mg·kg ? 1 , respectively, near the smelter and decrease regularly with distance in the northerly direction according to the regression model (y = ax? b ). The Zn concentrations are significantly different from the background range up to 30 km from the smelter, whereas the other metals approach background at only 10 km distance. Subsurface concentration peaks of Pb, Cu, and Hg are found at greater depth in soil profiles than peaks of Zn and Cd. Levels of Zn, Cd, and Pb in surface soil seem to have decreased from 1972 to 2003, whereas for Cu the levels appear not to be significantly different.  相似文献

Sr-85 and 134Cs in aqueous solution of the chlorides were administered daily to four pregnant reindeer during the last part of gestation. Radionuclide concentrations were determined in calves sacrificed at birth, and secretion of the nuclides was measured in milk. Although the gastrointestinal absorption of 85Sr was low, an apparently higher transfer of the absorbed fraction of 85Sr than 134Cs from the mother to the foetus led to similar accumulation of 85Sr and 134Cs in foetuses. At birth 1.4–1.6 and 1.5–2.5% of the total administered activities of 85Sr and 134Cs, respectively, were present in the calves‘ bodies. Transfer coefficients (F m) for 85Sr and 134Cs from feed to milk were estimated at 0.0218±0.0026 and 0.185±0.025 day kg−1, respectively, and the observed ratio (ORmilk-diet) for 85Sr was 0.124±0.037. Transfer of radiostrontium to reindeer milk was in agreement with previously reported relationships between Ca intake and radiostrontium transfer in ruminants. These relationships suggest that the transfer of radiostrontium to foetuses and milk of free-ranging reindeer can be 3–4 times higher than observed in this experiment (due to lower Ca intake with natural forage), but the transfer to milk will not be as high as that of ionic 134Cs. The concentrations of 85Sr in milk suggested that the does mobilized skeletal stores of Ca and 85Sr for milk production, although the diet appeared to satisfy the Ca requirements. In reindeer with radiostrontium intake during the whole year, radiostrontium concentrations in milk will therefore be higher than indicated by the F m value observed in our study. No differences in half-times for 85Sr and 134Cs secretion in milk were detected. Both nuclides were secreted with short- and long-term half-times of 1–2 and 12–19 days, respectively. For 85Sr, 80–90% of the activity was excreted with the short half-time, whereas the corresponding value for 134Cs was 30–50%.  相似文献

Some species of macromycetes (mushrooms) consistently are found to contain high concentrations of toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg), and consumption of wild-growing mushrooms is acknowledged as a significant source for Cd and Hg in humans. Yet little is known about the speciation of Cd and Hg in mushroom tissues. Here we present the first evidence of peptides of the phytochelatin family being responsible for binding a large fraction of Cd in caps of the macromycete Boletus edulis exposed to excess metals. Concentrations of Cd, Zn, Cu and Hg, as well as cytosolic Cd-binding capacity (CCBC), glutathione (GSH) and free proline (Pro) were quantified in fruiting bodies of B. edulis differentially exposed to a wide range of metals. Metal distribution among cytosolic compounds were investigated by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), followed by metal determinations with atomic absorption chromatography (AAS) and HR-ICP-MS. Cd-binding compounds in SEC elutates were investigated further by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). CCBC was >90 times higher in the exposed group relative to the reference group (Mann-Whitney's P < 0.001), whereas concentrations of free Pro were almost identical for the two groups. For the whole study selection, CCBC correlated positively with metal exposure (Spearman's P < 0.001 for all four metals), suggesting dose-dependent induction of Cd-binding compounds by exposure to these metals, possibly as a defense mechanism. The presence of phytochelatins (PCs), a family of cystein-rich oligopeptides, was confirmed in Cd-containing SEC fractions by HPLC-MS. The appearance of more complex PCs was coupled to declining concentrations of GSH. To our knowledge this is the first report demonstrating the presence of PCs in a macromycete.  相似文献

The induction of defense systems against metal exposure was investigated in 48 wild-growing fruiting bodies of the king bolete (Boletus edulis) from two areas polluted with several transition metals from smelters, as well as five reference areas. To determine the degree of metal exposure, cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) were determined in caps of fruiting bodies by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), whereas mercury (Hg) was determined by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CVAFS). Caps were analyzed further with respect to relative activities of the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as concentrations of total glutathione (GSHTOT = GSH + GSSG) and relative concentrations of heat shock protein 70 kDa (HSP70). The results showed that concentrations of the four metals, as well as SOD, CAT and HSP70, were significantly elevated in the exposed group (Mann-Whitney, P < or = 0.001). In contrast, GSHTOT was significantly lowered in the exposed group (P < or = 0.05). Significant positive correlations were established between concentrations of Cd, Zn, Hg, or Cu and activities of SOD (Spearman's P < or = 0.01 for the association between SOD and Cd, P < or = 0.001 for all other metal exposure parameters), CAT (P < or = 0.001 for all exposure parameters), or expression of HSP70 (P < or = 0.001 for all exposure parameters). Significant negative correlations were found between total GSH and Cd (P < or = 0.001), Zn (P < or = 0.001), or Hg (P < or = 0.05). We conclude that antioxidant enzymes are induced in wild-growing B. edulis exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of potentially toxic transition metals; whereas the net consumption of GSH that occurs with increasing metal exposure may reflect GSH consumption by mechanisms of metal detoxification. Finally, the induction of HSP70 suggests that the antioxidant response and the mechanisms in which GSH is consumed are insufficient for protection against the harmful effects of severe metal stress.  相似文献

Recently, iron deficiency has been connected with a heterogeneous accumulation of manganese in the rat brain. The striatum is particularly vulnerable, for there is a significant negative correlation between accumulated manganese and gamma-aminobutyric acid levels. The effect of dietary iron deficiency on the distribution of zinc and copper, two other divalent metals with essential neurobiological roles, is relatively unexplored. Thus, the primary goal of this study was to examine the effect of manipulating dietary iron and manganese levels on the concentrations of copper, iron, manganese and zinc in five rat brain regions as determined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis. Because divalent metal transporter has been implicated as a transporter of brain iron, manganese, and to a lesser extent zinc and copper, another goal of the study was to measure brain regional changes in transporter levels using Western blot analysis. As expected, there was a significant effect of iron deficiency (P < 0.05) on decreasing iron concentrations in the cerebellum and caudate putamen; and increasing manganese concentrations in caudate putamen, globus pallidus and substantia nigra. Furthermore, there was a significant effect of iron deficiency (P < 0.05) on increasing zinc concentration and a statistical trend (P = 0.08) toward iron deficiency-induced copper accumulation in the globus pallidus. Transporter protein in all five regions increased due to iron deficiency compared to control levels (P < 0.05); however, the globus pallidus and substantia nigra revealed the greatest increase. Therefore, the globus pallidus appears to be a target for divalent metal accumulation that is associated with dietary iron deficiency, potentially caused by increased transporter protein levels.  相似文献

Recently there has been a renewed interest in biological scaling relationships between parameters, such as those between, for example, body mass, dry matter intake and biological half-times of radionuclides that are useful in predicting the transfer of radiocaesium to different animal species, particularly to wild animals. However, there is still a considerable unexplained variability in transfer coefficient estimates between individuals of the same species. This paper discusses the physiological parameters that affect the transfer of radiocaesium to ruminants, and it shows how a better understanding of these parameters may help to reduce the within-species variability in radiocaesium transfer coefficients. In light of the improved understanding during the past 10-15 years of the importance of source-dependent bioavailability on absorption of radiocaesium from the gastrointestinal tract, it is concluded that further studies are required on the effects of feed digestibility and physiological factors on absorption and endogenous faecal excretion of radiocaesium to better understand the variability in transfer coefficients.  相似文献

Strontium was determined in trout scales from a river where it is often difficult to distinguish between sea trout and resident brown trout by coloration or other visual marks. Sr values were compared with values in scales from brown trout caught above the anadromous stretch of the same river and in scales from a river where sea trout coloration is typical. In the first river, the Sr concentration was generally low, and as a mean only 50 ppm higher in scales from individuals classified as sea trout from the anadromous stretch than in brown trout scales from the upper stretch. There was no consistency between fish coloration and Sr concentration in scales from presumed sea trout on the anadromous stretch. Individuals with a typical sea trout coloration could have a lower concentration of Sr than individuals that were classified as uncertain sea trout by coloration. Fish weight did not seem to influence Sr levels. The mean Sr concentration in scales from the typical sea trout colored population in the second river was 2.8 times higher than that of the anadromous part of the first river. The high variability of Sr concentration in sea trout scales may be explained by differences in individual and population life history. The Sr levels reflect differences in saltwater exposure, either expressed by length of stay or concentration of salt in marine habitats. The study has shown that fish coloration is an inadequate mean to distinguish between resident and migratory trout. Nor is Sr determination of scales alone sufficient, because of low inter-group and high intra-group variability in some rivers. However, Sr values can give valuable information on individual and population migration on a large scale.  相似文献

This study aims at assessing the suitability of Hylocomium splendens as a biomonitor for heavy metal deposition and contributing to the understanding of mineral nutrient uptake mechanisms in forest floor bryophytes. Concentrations of Ca, Mg, K, Cd, Cu and Pb were determined in Hylocomium splendens segment samples collected at 196 permanent vegetation plots from eleven monitoring areas, where the vegetation-environment relationships had previously been thoroughly studied. Element concentrations in Hylocomium splendens were related to environmentally interpreted vegetational gradients, cover of understorey vascular plants, and local environmental conditions, including element concentrations in humus, soil moisture and tree impact, by means of correlation analyses performed separately for each area. A combined test was performed for each Hylocomium splendens variable over all eleven areas, showing that concentrations of Ca, Cd and Mg in Hylocomium splendens were strongly correlated with the main vegetational gradient and with pH and concentrations of Ca and total N in humus, indicating considerable uptake of nutrients by Hylocomium splendens from water that has been in contact with humus. These relationships were less strong in the climatically most humid areas. Concentrations of all elements were more or less strongly correlated with one or more variables reflecting tree influence (tree density as measured by basal area and two crown influence indices) reflecting that throughfall precipitation, modified by leaching from the canopy, partly accounts for input of elements, especially for K, Cd and Mg. Only concentrations of Pb, Cd and Cu were significantly correlated, negatively, with vascular plant cover, indicating that supply of elements by leaching from understorey vascular plant foliage is negligible. The concentration of Cu in Hylocomium splendens was only weakly correlated, and the concentration of Pb unrelated to vegetational gradients and most environmental conditions. The results indicate that atmospheric deposition accounts for most of the input of Pb, confirming the suitability of Hylocomium splendens as a biomonitor for this element. For elements such as Cd local environmental conditions should be carefully considered, even when data from regional moss surveys are to be interpreted.
