Summary A study was done to evaluate the influence of soil moisture and rainfall on root and microbial biomass production under the canopy of the desert shrub Zygophyllum dumosum. During the study period the root biomass production increased following the early rains but subsequently declined, remaining fairly constant thoroughout the season. In contrast microbial biomass and soil organic matter increased during the rainy season and declined with the onset of the dry summer period. Based on our results we suggest that the moisture event and not the amount and the organic matter content regulate root and microbial biomass production at the 0 to 10 cm soil layer.Contribution of the Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Center, Bet Dagan, Israel. paper no. 2617-E, 1989 series  相似文献

Abstract— Our knowledge of fundamental angiosperm interrelationships is still very incomplete. The absence of a narrowly circumscribed gymnosperm outgroup, ideally the sister group, makes character evaluation, necessary for a cladistic analysis, difficult. According to current views the superorder Magnoliiflorae with a number of other groups, for example the monocotyledons, may represent a complex of families near the base of the angiosperms. Interrelationships of groups within the monocotyledons are much better understood than those between groups within the dicotyledons. A cladogram of monocotyledon orders based on earlier work by R. Dahlgren, H. T. Clifford, and F. N. Rasmussen is presented. A data matrix for a sample of the angiosperms with 61 characters for 49 taxa, mostly magnoliifloran and related families, is presented. The characters are polarized mainly according to the current view that the primitive angiosperm morphotype is a woody dicotyledon with strobiloid flowers. As an alternative the matrix is adjusted following W. C. Burger's conjecture that the primitive angiosperm was a herbaceous monocotyledon with trimerous flowers. Both matrices were run in a computerized parsimony analysis, resulting in numerous equally parsimonious solutions. This result is illustrative of the great homoplasy in the available character information, and also of how little actually is known about fundamental angiosperm interrelationships or phylogeny.  相似文献

In order to study the relationships among mammalian alpha-globin genes, we have determined the sequence of the 3' flanking region of the human alpha 1 globin gene and have made pairwise comparisons between sequenced alpha-globin genes. The flanking regions were examined in detail because sequence matches in these regions could be interpreted with the least complication from the gene duplications and conversions that have occurred frequently in mammalian alpha-like globin gene clusters. We found good matches between the flanking regions of human alpha 1 and rabbit alpha 1, human psi alpha 1 and goat I alpha, human alpha 2 and goat II alpha, and horse alpha 1 and goat II alpha. These matches were used to align the alpha-globin genes in gene clusters from different mammals. This alignment shows that genes at equivalent positions in the gene clusters of different mammals can be functional or nonfunctional, depending on whether they corrected against a functional alpha-globin gene in recent evolutionary history. The number of alpha-globin genes (including pseudogenes) appears to differ among species, although highly divergent pseudogenes may not have been detected in all species examined. Although matching sequences could be found in interspecies comparisons of the flanking regions of alpha- globin genes, these matches are not as extensive as those found in the flanking regions of mammalian beta-like globin genes. This observation suggests that the noncoding sequences in the mammalian alpha-globin gene clusters are evolving at a faster rate than those in the beta-like globin gene clusters. The proposed faster rate of evolution fits with the poor conservation of the genetic linkage map around alpha-globin gene clusters when compared to that of the beta-like globin gene clusters. Analysis of the 3' flanking regions of alpha-globin genes has revealed a conserved sequence approximately 100-150 bp 3' to the polyadenylation site; this sequence may be involved in the expression or regulation of alpha-globin genes.   相似文献

The ability of Sertoli cells to metabolize 3H-estradiol-17 beta was investigated utilizing Sertoli cell cultures isolated from 18d rat testes. The Sertoli cells converted estradiol-17 beta to estriol as shown by recrystallization of estriol from samples containing cells and media but not from cell-free control media. The effect of FSH treatment on such metabolism was investigated and was shown to be similar to nontreated samples. This is the first demonstration that 16 alpha-hydroxylase is present in Sertoli cells and that this enzyme activity is not under the influence of FSH.  相似文献

A plasmid from Erwinia amylovora strain Ea322, pCPP60, was studied for its involvement in the phytopathogenicity of this strain. Eviction through incompatibility and curing with acridine orange did not affect the pathogenic capability of Ea322. The plasmid was characterized as self-transmissible with a narrow host range. Hybridization of its origin of replication with plasmids of different incompatibility groups revealed affiliation with IncF. The exact subgroup was not determined, although it does not belong to IncFI, IncFII, IncFIV, or IncFV. A sequence of 800 bp, required for conjugation in cis, was cloned in pUC9. A "miniplasmid" containing the origin of replication in a 1.2-kb sequence was constructed. Its high copy number was in contrast with the stringently controlled copy number of the native plasmid of one to three copies per chromosome equivalent.  相似文献

Four cases of Crouzon syndrome, one familial and three sporadic, were investigated for mutations in exon B of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene. In the familial case, a mutation was found at codon 340 that exchanged tyrosine for histidine. Mutations at codon 342, detected in the three sporadic cases, replaced a cysteine by another amino acid. While three of the mutations have been described before, the fourth mutation, a CG transversion at codon 342 in one of the sporadic cases, has not been recognized previously. Compilation of all exon B mutations in Crouzon syndrome described to date revealed that 6 of the 8 sporadic and 2 of the 9 familial cases have mutations in codon 342. These mutations caused the substitution of cysteine for another amino acid. Given that a mutation in codon 342 was found in 8 out of 17 cases and that in 9 cases the mutation occurred at five additional positions, codon 342 of exon B of the FGFR2 gene may be predisposed to mutations in Crouzon syndrome.  相似文献

Summary We examined the role of subterranean termites in decomposition of cattle dung, various herbaceous plant species and wood in a Chihuahuan desert ecosystem. From July–September, termites removed dung at a rate of 0.63 g day-1 accounting for a percent mass loss of 19.5–100%. During the autumn subterranean termites consumed more than 50% of the leaves of the shrub Larrea tridentata, the grass Erioneuron pulchellum and annual plant Lepidium lasiocarpum and Baileya multiradiata but used very little of two other annuals Eriastrum diffusum and Eriogonum trichopes. Yucca inflorescence stalks on plots with termites lost 23% of their original mass in 30 months while those on termite free soils lost 11%. Elimination of termites resulted in reduction of fluff grass, Erioneuron pulchellum biomass, thereby affecting the structure of the ecosystem.  相似文献

Studies on the secretion of inhibin and its mode of action were carried out in vitro, utilizing cell cultures. Isolated rat Sertoli cells secreted an inhibin-like heat-labile, non-dialysable substance, Sertoli Cell Factor (SCF), which could selectively suppress FSH secretion by rat anterior pituitary cells. SCF selectively suppressed the basal and GnRH-stimulated FSH release as well as the de-novo synthesis of FSH by acting directly on the pituitary cells. In 1 out of 5 experiments, SCF also suppressed the synthesis of LH, possibly by affecting the overall protein synthesis. Under similar culture conditions, Sertoli cells isolated from animals between 18 and 90 days of age secreted comparable amounts of SCF. In contrast, anterior pituitary cells from adult rats (60-90 days old) were considerably more sensitive to SCF than pituitary cells obtained from younger (18-33 days old) animals, suggesting that decline in circulating FSH level, occurring at approximately 35 days of age, may result from increased pituitary sensitivity to inhibin. Besides identifying the Sertoli cells as the site of inhibin production in the testis, these studies demonstrated direct action of inhibin at the pituitary cell level, resulting in suppression of FSH synthesis and release.  相似文献
