Several EU countries import wood pellets from the south‐eastern United States. The imported wood pellets are (co‐)fired in power plants with the aim of reducing overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from electricity and meeting EU renewable energy targets. To assess whether GHG emissions are reduced and on what timescale, we construct the GHG balance of wood‐pellet electricity. This GHG balance consists of supply chain and combustion GHG emissions, carbon sequestration during biomass growth and avoided GHG emissions through replacing fossil electricity. We investigate wood pellets from four softwood feedstock types: small roundwood, commercial thinnings, harvest residues and mill residues. Per feedstock, the GHG balance of wood‐pellet electricity is compared against those of alternative scenarios. Alternative scenarios are combinations of alternative fates of the feedstock materials, such as in‐forest decomposition, or the production of paper or wood panels like oriented strand board (OSB). Alternative scenario composition depends on feedstock type and local demand for this feedstock. Results indicate that the GHG balance of wood‐pellet electricity equals that of alternative scenarios within 0–21 years (the GHG parity time), after which wood‐pellet electricity has sustained climate benefits. Parity times increase by a maximum of 12 years when varying key variables (emissions associated with paper and panels, soil carbon increase via feedstock decomposition, wood‐pellet electricity supply chain emissions) within maximum plausible ranges. Using commercial thinnings, harvest residues or mill residues as feedstock leads to the shortest GHG parity times (0–6 years) and fastest GHG benefits from wood‐pellet electricity. We find shorter GHG parity times than previous studies, for we use a novel approach that differentiates feedstocks and considers alternative scenarios based on (combinations of) alternative feedstock fates, rather than on alternative land uses. This novel approach is relevant for bioenergy derived from low‐value feedstocks.  相似文献

Tuber formation and carbohydrate metabolism in potatoes were studied using transgenic potato plants carrying the Agrobacterium tumefaciens ipt gene, involved in cytokinin biosynthesis. Three independent transformants, viz. clones 1, 11 and 13, whose cytokinin and auxin content had previously been shown to be different from each other and from the wild-type, were analysed in vitro. Clones 11 and 13 showed a higher ability to form stolons and tubers, as evident from: (1) stolon development in whole plants grown under non-inductive conditions, (2) total number and weight of tubers formed by cuttings of this clone in darkness, (3) tubers appeared earlier than tubers of wild-type plants and at a lower sucrose concentration in the medium. Clone 1 did not form stolons or tubers under any conditions tested, but rather formed short shoots. A series of metabolic changes, known to be characteristic for tubers, were analysed in leaves, stems and developing buds. It was found that the short type of shoots, formed by clone 1, had metabolic characteristics very similar to tubers formed in wild-type or clones 11 and 13, including glucose, fructose, sucrose, and starch levels, and activities of invertase, sucrose synthase and fructokinase. It is concluded that the regulation of the stolon swelling and of carbohydrate metabolism, normally occurring simultaneously, can be uncoupled, and are thus, at least partly independent phenomena. The present data obtained with a high-cytokinin line indicate that cytokinins (probably in concert with auxins) might be mainly involved in the regulation of tuber morphology.  相似文献

The effects of concentrations of volatile fatty acids on an anaerobic, glucose-limited, and pH-controlled growing culture of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis were studied. Suddenly increasing volatile fatty acids to the concentrations representative of the ceca of 15-day-old broiler chickens caused washout of serovar Enteritidis. In contrast, a sudden increase to the volatile fatty acid concentrations representative of the ceca of younger broiler chickens caused a reduction in the biomass but not washout. Gradually increasing volatile fatty acids caused a gradual decrease in the biomass of serovar Enteritidis. We conclude that the concentrations of volatile fatty acids present in the ceca of broilers with a mature microflora can cause washout of serovar Enteritidis in an in vitro system mimicking cecal ecophysiology.  相似文献

The effects of proline and caffeic acid on the survival of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157:H7 strain ATCC 43895 in a model apple juice medium were studied. It is hypothesized that the inhibitory effect of caffeic acid may explain why almost all outbreaks of STEC O157:H7 infections linked to apple juice or cider have occurred in October or November.  相似文献

A highly synchronised in-vitro tuberisation system, based on single-node cuttings containing an axillary bud, was used to investigate the activity patterns of enzymes involved in the conversion of sucrose to hexose-phosphates during stolon-to-tuber transition of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Two different non-tuberising systems were included to distinguish between changes that are or are not tuber-specific. At tuberisation the activity of soluble acid invertase decreased (13-fold) and of sucrose synthase increased (12-fold). The activity of both enzymes remained unchanged in the non-tuberising treatments. Based on the opposite patterns and large difference in activity of these two sucrolytic enzymes, we conclude that sucrose synthase constitutes the predominant route of sucrose breakdown after tuber initiation. During the period before tuberisation, the activity of cell-wall-bound invertase and of hexokinase showed a highly positive correlation (r 2 = 0.96 in all the three treatments, suggesting coordinated coarse control of both enzyme activities. After the onset of tuberisation cell-wall-bound invertase activity decreased to a very low level, a change not observed in the non-tuberising systems, indicating that cell-wall-bound invertase is presumably not involved in the unloading mechanism and/or short-distance transport of sucrose within the perimedulla of growing tubers. The overall activity of fructokinase and of hexokinase both showed a fourfold increase after tuber initiation, but remained unchanged in the non-tuberising systems. The increase of fructokinase suggests that the phosphorylation of fructose by fructokinase down-regulates the cytosolic fructose content in order to maintain a high sucrose-synthase-catalysed net flux of sucrose to phosphorylated hexoses during rapid tuber growth. The increase of total glucose-phosphorylating potential could be a response to the tuberisation-related starch accumulation process. The activity of UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase showed no developmental change. The level of UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase activity is very likely the result of metabolic regulation. During cultivation on a mixture of xylose and glucose, Bacteroides xylanolyticus X5-1 showed neither diauxic growth nor a substrate preference. Xylose-limited continuous-culture cells were able to consume xylose and glucose both as single substrates and as mixed substrates without any lag phase. When glucose was the growth-limiting substrate, the microorganism was unable to consume xylose. However, in the presence of a small amount of glucose or pyruvate, xylose was utilized after a short lag phase. In glucose-limited cells, xylose isomerase was present at low activity but xylulose kinase activity could not be detected. On addition of a mixture of xylose and glucose, xylose isomerase was induced immediately and xylulose kinase was induced after about 30 min. The induction of the two enzymes was sensitive to chloramphenicol, showing de novo synthesis. Xylose uptake in glucose-grown cells was very low, but the uptake rate could be increased when incubated with a xylose-glucose mixture. The increase in the uptake rate was not affected by chloramphenicol, indicating that a constitutive uptake system had to be activated. The inability of B. xylanolyticus X5-1 cells undergoing glucose-limited continuous culture to induce the xylose catabolic pathway after the addition of only xylose probably was caused by energy limitation.  相似文献

The interpretation of optical remote sensing data of estuaries and tidal flat areas is hampered by optical complexity and often extreme turbidity. Extremely high concentrations of suspended matter, chlorophyll and dissolved organic matter, local differences, seasonal and tidal variations and resuspension are important factors influencing the optical properties in such areas. This review gives an overview of the processes in estuaries and tidal flat areas and the implications of these for remote sensing in such areas, using the Wadden Sea as a case study area. Results show that remote sensing research in extremely turbid estuaries and tidal areas is possible. However, this requires sensors with a large ground resolution, algorithms tuned for high concentrations of various substances and the local specific optical properties of these substances, a simultaneous detection of water colour and land–water boundaries, a very short time lag between acquisition of remote sensing and in situ data used for validation and sufficient geophysical and ecological knowledge of the area.  相似文献

The role of drift and diffusion as driving forces for charge carrier extraction in flat heterojunction organic solar cells is examined at the example of devices showing intentional S‐shaped current–voltage (J‐V) characteristics. Since these kinks are related to energy barriers causing a redistribution of the electric field and charge carrier density gradients, they are suitable for studying the limits of charge extraction. The dynamics of this redistribution process are experimentally monitored via transient photocurrents, where the current response on square pulses of light is measured in the μs to ms regime. In combination with drift‐diffusion simulation data, we demonstrate a pile‐up of charge carriers at extraction barriers and a high contribution of diffusion to photocurrent in the case of injection barriers. Both types of barrier lead to S‐kinks in the J‐V curve and can be distinguished from each other and from other reasons for S‐kinks (e.g. imbalanced mobilities) by applying the presented approach. Furthermore, it is also helpful to investigate the driving forces for charge extraction in devices without S‐shaped J‐V curve close to open circuit to evaluate whether their electrodes are optimized.  相似文献

Competitive exclusion of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis by a mixed culture of Lactobacillus crispatus and Clostridium lactatifermentans was studied in a sequencing fed-batch reactor mimicking the cecal ecophysiology of broiler chickens. Growth of serovar Enteritidis was inhibited by a mixed culture of L. crispatus and C. lactatifermentans at pH 5.8 but not by a monoculture of L. crispatus at the same pH. Moreover, experiments performed at pH 7.0 did not show growth inhibition of serovar Enteritidis. L. crispatus fermented lactose to lactate, and C. lactatifermentans fermented the lactate to acetate and propionate in a mixed culture of L. crispatus and C. lactatifermentans growing on lactose. In contrast, only lactate was produced from lactose by a monoculture of L. crispatus. At pH 5.8 considerable concentrations of acetate and propionate were present as undissociated acids, whereas only trace levels of undissociated lactate were present at pH 5.8 due to the low pK(a) of lactate. At pH 7.0 all three acids were present in their dissociated forms. We conclude that a mixed culture of L. crispatus and C. lactatifermentans inhibits growth of serovar Enteritidis under cecal growth conditions. The undissociated forms of acetate and propionate produced in the mixed culture inhibited the growth of serovar Enteritidis.  相似文献
