Specific antibodies and mycobacterial antigens in pulmonary tuberculosis patients sera. Note I

206 sera collected from different groups of subjects were analyzed by immunoenzymatic methods regarding the content of Mycobacterium tuberculosis specific antibodies and mycobacterial antigens. The results underlined that two assays offered improved serologic diagnosis of tuberculosis over a single antibody test. BCG vaccination interferes with serologic tests for tuberculosis when polyspecific antibodies or mixture of common and specific antigens are used as immunologic reagents. A mycobacterial antigens circadian variation in correlation with vesperal fever in tuberculous patients was not revealed. The mycobacterial antigens seem to become undetectable, in sera, after 6 months of efficient treatment.     

Noninvasive genetic studies of brown bears using power poles

One difficulty in the conservation of endangered wildlife is the lack of reliable information on its status. This lack of knowledge can often be attributed to financial and logistic constraints as well as the lack of trained personnel to collect data. We test a simple method to study bears in the southern Balkans by inspecting power poles, which are used by bears for marking and rubbing purposes. We created a network of barbed-wire fitted poles for the collection of hair samples, evenly distributed throughout six study areas. During 87 sampling sessions in the main study area, we collected 191 samples and identified six microsatellite loci that were variable enough for individual bear identification. The most and best-quality hair samples were collected during the mating period, and DNA was most successfully extracted from samples remaining <4 weeks in the field. In the six study areas, we identified 47 bears. An advantage of using power poles for hair sampling is their availability and accessibility; no bait is required, and the network can be easily set up. A drawback may be an unequal capture probability of sex and age classes of bears. Despite this limitation, using power poles proved to be a simple and cheap method for the noninvasive genetic study of bears that did not require any prior knowledge on habitat use and activity patterns. The method is suitable for large-scale surveys to estimate distribution and relative densities of bears and could also be applied for studying other species.     

Turning the other cheek: the viewpoint dependence of facial expression after-effects

How do we visually encode facial expressions? Is this done by viewpoint-dependent mechanisms representing facial expressions as two-dimensional templates or do we build more complex viewpoint independent three-dimensional representations? Recent facial adaptation techniques offer a powerful way to address these questions. Prolonged viewing of a stimulus (adaptation) changes the perception of subsequently viewed stimuli (an after-effect). Adaptation to a particular attribute is believed to target those neural mechanisms encoding that attribute. We gathered images of facial expressions taken simultaneously from five different viewpoints evenly spread from the three-quarter leftward to the three-quarter rightward facing view. We measured the strength of expression after-effects as a function of the difference between adaptation and test viewpoints. Our data show that, although there is a decrease in after-effect over test viewpoint, there remains a substantial after-effect when adapt and test are at differing three-quarter views. We take these results to indicate that neural systems encoding facial expressions contain a mixture of viewpoint-dependent and viewpoint-independent elements. This accords with evidence from single cell recording studies in macaque and is consonant with a view in which viewpoint-independent expression encoding arises from a combination of view-dependent expression-sensitive responses.     

An antibacterial hydroxy fusidic acid analogue from Acremonium crotocinigenum

A fusidane triterpene, 16-deacetoxy-7-beta-hydroxy-fusidic acid (1), was isolated from a fermentation of the mitosporic fungus Acremonium crotocinigenum. Full unambiguous assignment of all (1)H and (13)C data of 1 was carried out by extensive one- and two-dimensional NMR studies employing HMQC and HMBC spectra. Compound 1 was tested against a panel of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains and showed minimum inhibitory concentration values of 16 microg/ml.
