Use of additional/alternative food source to predators is one of the widely recognised practices in the field of biological control. Both theoretical and experimental works point out that quality and quantity of additional food play a vital role in the controllability of the pest. Theoretical studies carried out previously in this direction indicate that incorporating mutual interference between predators can stabilise the system. Experimental evidence also point out that mutual interference between predators can affect the outcome of the biological control programs. In this article dynamics of additional food provided predator–prey system in the presence of mutual interference between predators has been studied. The mutual interference between predators is modelled using Beddington–DeAngelis type functional response. The system analysis highlights the role of mutual interference on the success of biological control programs when predators are provided with additional food. The model results indicate the possibility of stable coexistence of predators with low prey population levels. This is in contrast to classical predator–prey models wherein this stable co-existence at low prey population levels is not possible. This study classifies the characteristics of biological control agents and additional food (of suitable quality and quantity), permitting the eco-managers to enhance the success rate of biological control programs.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze a variation of a standard predator-prey model with type II functional response which represents predator-prey dynamics in the presence of some additional food to the predator. The aim is to study the consequences of providing additional food on the system dynamics. We conclude that handling times for the available foods play a key role in determining the eventual state of the ecosystem. It is interesting to observe that by varying the quality and quantity of additional food we can not only control and limit the prey, but also limit and eradicate the predators. In the context of biological pest control, the results caution the manager on the choice of quality and quantity of the additional food used for this purpose. An arbitrary choice may have opposite effects leading to increase in pest concentration and eradication of the predator. This study offers insight into the possible management strategies that involve manipulation of quality and supply level of additional food to predators, for the benefit of biological control. The theoretical conclusions agree with results of some practical biological control experiments.  相似文献

This study focuses on the dynamic flow through the fetal aortic arch driven by the concurrent action of right and left ventricles. We created a parametric pulsatile computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the fetal aortic junction with physiologic vessel geometries. To gain a better biophysical understanding, an in vitro experimental fetal flow loop for flow visualization was constructed for identical CFD conditions. CFD and in vitro experimental results were comparable. Swirling flow during the acceleration phase of the cardiac cycle and unidirectional flow following mid-deceleration phase were observed in pulmonary arteries (PA), head-neck vessels, and descending aorta. Right-to-left (oxygenated) blood flowed through the ductus arteriosus (DA) posterior relative to the antegrade left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) stream and resembled jet flow. LVOT and right ventricular outflow tract flow mixing had not completed until approximately 3.5 descending aorta diameters downstream of the DA insertion into the aortic arch. Normal arch model flow patterns were then compared to flow patterns of four common congenital heart malformations that include aortic arch anomalies. Weak oscillatory reversing flow through the DA junction was observed only for the Tetralogy of Fallot configuration. PA and hypoplastic left heart syndrome configurations demonstrated complex, abnormal flow patterns in the PAs and head-neck vessels. Aortic coarctation resulted in large-scale recirculating flow in the aortic arch proximal to the DA. Intravascular flow patterns spatially correlated with abnormal vascular structures consistent with the paradigm that abnormal intravascular flow patterns associated with congenital heart disease influence vascular growth and function.  相似文献

Negative dielectrophoretic (n-DEP) cell manipulation is an efficient way to pattern human liver cells on micro-electrode arrays. Maintaining cell viability is an important objective for this approach. This study investigates the effect of low conductivity medium and the optimally designed microchip on cell viability and cell adhesion. To explore the influence of conductivity on cell viability and cell adhesion, we have used earlier reported dielectrophoresis (DEP) buffer with a conductivity of 10.2 mS/m and three formulated media with conductivity of 9.02 (M1), 8.14 (M2), 9.55 (M3) mS/m. The earlier reported isotonic sucrose/dextrose buffer (DEP buffer) used for DEP manipulation has the drawback of poor cell adhesion and cell viability. A microchip prototype with well-defined positioning of titanium electrode arrays was designed and fabricated on a glass substrate. The gap between the radial electrodes was accurately determined to achieve good cell patterning performance. Parameters such as dimension of positioning electrode, amplitude, and frequency of voltage signal were investigated to optimize the performance of the microchip.  相似文献

We studied six clinical isolates of Candida albicans. All six isolates showed high level resistance to fluconazole (minimum inhibitory concentrations 64 microg/ml) with varying degrees of cross-resistance to other azoles but not to amphotericin B. Neither higher dosage nor upregulation of the gene encoding the cytochrome P- 450 lanosterol 14 alpha-demethylase (CYP51A1 or P-450LDM) was responsible for fluconazole resistance. The resistant and the susceptible isolates accumulated similar amounts of azoles. To examine whether resistance to fluconazole in these clinical isolates of C. albicans is mediated by an altered target of azole action, we cloned the structural gene encoding P-450LDM from the fluconazole resistant isolates. The amino acid sequences of the P-450LDMs from the isolates were deduced from the gene sequences and compared to the P-450LDM sequence of the fluconazole-susceptible C. albicans B311. The enzymes from the clinical isolates showed 2 to 7 amino acid variations scattered across the molecules encompassing 10 different loci. One-half of the amino acid changes obtained were conserved substitutions (E116D, K143R, E266D, D278E, R287K) compared to the susceptible strain. Non-conserved substitutions were T128K, R267H, S405F, G450E and G464S, three of which are in and around the hemebinding region of the molecule. R287K is the only amino acid change that was found in all six clinical isolates. One or more of these mutational alterations may lead to the expression of an azole-resistant enzyme.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the response of cervical muscles to physiologic tensile stretch of cervical facet joint capsule (FJC) at a quasi-static displacement rate of 0.5 mm/s. In vivo caprine left C5–C6 FJC preparations were subjected to an incremental tensile displacement paradigm. EMG activity was recorded during FJC stretch from the right trapezius (TR) and multifidus (MF) muscle groups at the C5 and C6 levels and bilaterally from the sternomastoid (SM) and longus colli (LC) muscle groups at the C5–C6 level. Onset of muscular activity was later analyzed using visual and computer-based methods. Capsule load and strain at the time of onset were recorded and compared between the muscle groups. Results indicated capsule load was a better indicator of the tensile stretch thresholds for muscular recruitment than capsule strain. MF responded at significantly smaller capsule loads than TR and LC, while TR and LC activation loads were not significantly different. SM did not respond to physiologic FJC stretch. Muscle group recruitment order reflected the muscles’ fiber type compositions and functional roles in the spine. This study provides the first evidence that the cervical ligamento-muscular reflex pathways are activated via tensile FJC stretch and extend to superficial and deep musculature on the anterior and posterior aspects of the neck, ipsilateral and contralateral to the side of FJC stretch.  相似文献

Necessity to understand the role of additional food as a tool in biological control programs is being increasingly felt, particularly due to its eco-friendly nature. A thorough mathematical analysis in this direction revealed the vital role of quality and quantity of the additional food in the controllability of the predator–prey systems. In this article controllability of the additional food—provided predator–prey system is studied from perspectives of pest eradication and biological conservation. Time optimal paths have been constructed to drive the state of the system to a desired terminal state by choosing quantity of the additional food as control variable. The theory developed in this article has been illustrated by solving problems related to pest eradication and biological conservation.  相似文献

In this paper we study the bio-economics of a renewable resource with governing dynamics described by two distinct growth functions (viz., logistic and Gompertz growth functions) in a seasonally varying environment. Seasonality is introduced into the system by taking the involved ecological parameters to be periodic. In this work, we establish a procedure to obtain the optimal path and compute the optimal effort policy which maximizes the net revenue to the harvester for a fairly general optimal control problem and apply this procedure to the considered models to derive some important conclusions. These problems are solved on the infinite horizon. We find that, for both the models, the optimal harvest policy and the corresponding optimal path are periodic after a finite time. We also obtain optimal solution, a suboptimal harvesting policy and the corresponding suboptimal approach path to reach this optimal solution. The key results are illustrated using numerical simulations and we compare the revenues to the harvester along the optimal and suboptimal paths. The general procedure developed in this work, for obtaining the optimal effort policy and the optimal path, has wider applicability.  相似文献
