Zingiberanamalayanum sp. nov. (Zingiberaceae) from India

Zingiber anamalayanum (Zingiberaceae), a new species from the southern western Ghats, India is described and illustrated. A phenetic analyses to assess the similarity indices and the uniqueness of the new species have been performed. A diagnostic key to Zingiber spp. in south India is provided.     

Body water relations in two species of gerbil (Tatera indica indica andMeriones hurrianae) of the Indian desert

Summary The relative body water conservation efficiency of two Indian desert gerbil species,Meriones hurrianae (diurnal/crepuscular) andTatera indica (nocturnal), has been examined under near-natural conditons in different seasons.A mean urine osmolarity of 3180 mosmol/l (maximum 4645 mosmol/l) inM. hurrianae and a mean value of 5128 mosmol/l (maximum 7547 mosmol/l) inT. indica have been recorded during summer.Urine osmolarity and urea levels indicated that whileM. hurrianae remain sufficiently hydrated mainly by virtue of their feeding habit,Tatera indica may depend on the relatively higher concentrating capacity of their kidneys.     

Two forms of aspartate aminotransferase in rat liver and kidney mitochondria

1. Butan-1-ol solubilizes that portion of rat liver mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1) that cannot be solubilized by ultrasonics and other treatments. 2. A difference in electrophoretic mobilities, chromatographic behaviour and solubility characteristics between the enzymes solubilized by ultrasonic treatment and by butan-1-ol was observed, suggesting the occurrence of two forms of this enzyme in rat liver mitochondria. 3. Half the aspartate aminotransferase activity of rat kidney homogenate was present in a high-speed supernatant fraction, the remainder being in the mitochondria. 4. A considerable increase in aspartate aminotransferase activity was observed when kidney mitochondrial suspensions were treated with ultrasonics or detergents. 5. All the activity after maximum activation was recoverable in the supernatant after centrifugation at 105000g for 1hr. 6. The electrophoretic mobility of the kidney mitochondrial enzyme was cathodic and that of the supernatant enzyme anodic. 7. Cortisone administration increased the activities of both mitochondrial and supernatant aspartate aminotransferases of liver, but only that of the supernatant enzyme of kidney.     

Possible interrelationship between vitamins E and b12 in the disturbance in methylmalonate metabolism in vitamin E deficiency.

The presence of three major proteins alpha, beta and gamma in rat ventral prostate was demonstrated by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels containing sodium dodecyl sulphate. Their regulation by androgens was studied by measuring the rates of synthesis of the proteins in minced prostatic tissue by using L-[35S]methionine. The three proteins account for 30-40% of the proteins synthesized in the gland. After castration, their rates of synthesis rapidly decline to about 1% that of normal animals, and this cannot be accounted for by the accompanying decrease in general protein synthesis. Testosterone reverses these changes in castrated animals, so that after 4 days normal synthesis is restored. The regulation is specific for androgens, since cyproterone acetate, an anti-androgen, is inhibitory and oestradiol-17beta and corticosterone are without effect. Preliminary characterization of the proteins indicates that protein alpha (mol.wt. 22000, pI unknown) is a glycoprotein containing glucose and/or mannose residues and occurs in both the mitochondrial and cytosol fractions. Protein beta (mol.wt. 12000, pI5.4) is also a glycoprotein, but is found exclusively in the cytosol fraction. Protein gamma (mol.wt. 8000, pI5.4) is also a glycoprotein, but is found exclusively in the cytosol fraction. Protein gamma (mol.wt. 8000, pI5.4) is also found exclusively in the cytosol fraction.     

Development of thermotolerance in Neurospora crassa by heat shock and other stresses eliciting peroxidase induction.

Hyperthermia, CdCl2, sodium arsenite, and H2O2 led to the rapid appearance of high levels of peroxidase in Neurospora crassa cultures and induced tolerance toward normally lethal temperatures in 60-h-old colonies. Intracellular superoxide dismutase levels did not correlate with the development of thermotolerance.     

Effect of pH on the phase behavior of DMPC bilayers

We have studied the effect of acidic pH on the phase behavior of the zwitterionic lipid 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) using differential scanning calorimetry and x-ray scattering. Dispersions of DMPC in HCl solutions of pH = 4 and 3 behave identical to dispersions in water. The main transition temperature increases sharply and the pre-transition disappears at lower pH. An untilted gel phase is observed at pH = 2 and 1, in contrast to the tilted gel phase found at higher pH. The relatively large periodicity of the untilted gel phase, in comparison to that of the tilted gel phase occurring near neutral pH, clearly demonstrates the simultaneous charging and dehydration of the headgroups as the pH approaches the pK of the phosphate group. Headgroup dehydration at low pH also leads to the formation of DMPC crystallites and the inverted hexagonal phase at low and high temperatures, respectively, after a few days of incubation. These results show the significant effect of acidic pH on the phase behavior of zwitterionic lipids.
