At present there is little knowledge about how density regulates population growth rate and to what extent this is determined by life-history patterns. We compared density dependent population consequences in the Nicholsonian sense based on experimental observations and life-history modeling for the earthworms Lumbricus terrestris and Eisenia fetida . Both species differ in their life-histories, L. terrestris being a relatively long-lived species with slow reproduction and occurring at low densities compared to E. fetida which has a more opportunistic strategy with a high reproductive output. E. fetida is able to colonise new habitats rapidly and may occur at relatively high population densities. Density dependency of population growth rate was estimated by incorporating density dependent effects on reproduction and growth using a modified Euler equation. The results point out that E. fetida was not as strongly impacted by density as compared to L. terrestris . Population growth rate in E. fetida was hardly affected at low and moderate density, being reduced only at high level, this compares to L. terrestris where even relatively small density effects resulted in a strong negative effect on population growth rate. Our findings indicate that density-dependent regulation in earthworms can be quantified using life-history analysis. The outcomes are in agreement with empirical field observations for populations (i.e. L. terrestris occurs ar low density, E. fetida at high density). Consideration of the potential importance of Nicholsonian density dependence for field populations of these two species in light of their known biology however produces counterintuitive conclusions. In E. fetida , although density tolerant, rapid population growth may mean this species may be subject to density dependeny regulation. In L. terrestris , although density sensitive, complex behavioural ecology (surface activity, territoriality) may limit of feedback influence on population size.  相似文献

Chick embryo tRNA, prepared by a simple large-scale method, was fractionated on three different ion-exchange columns. In all cases simple chromatographic patterns for various tRNA species were observed, indicating the presence of only a few major species of tRNA for each amino acid. By repeated chromatography one species of alanine tRNA was purified to approx. 80% purity. T1 ribonuclease digest of this purified tRNA gave a simple chromatographic pattern. Because of the simplicity of the method of preparation of tRNA from this readily available source and the presence of only a few species of tRNA for each amino acid, chick embryo is suited for the study of tRNA and its various functions in higher systems.  相似文献

Hatchery augmentation has been used to mitigate declines in fish populations worldwide, especially for sturgeon species. Information regarding stocking success including survival, dispersal, and growth of sturgeon post‐stocking may refine sturgeon augmentation programs and facilitate recovery. Pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus populations have been supplemented by hatchery‐reared stocks for 25 years in the Missouri River, USA. We assessed survival, dispersal patterns, and growth characteristics of post‐stocked pallid sturgeon in the lower Missouri River. Hatchery‐reared pallid sturgeon stocked at age‐1 (4.1%) and > age‐1 (2.9%) were recaptured at a higher frequency than fish stocked at age‐0 (0.3%). Post‐stocking dispersal patterns suggested dispersal range increase as age increased, but individuals tended to remain in the same river segment as their stocking location. Growth rates varied by year class with younger year classes having truncated growth trajectories compared to older year classes. Post‐stock survival of pallid sturgeon varied by age‐at‐stocking and suggest age‐1 survival has declined through time. Augmentation of pallid sturgeon may benefit from considering dispersal from stocking location and by stocking older individuals which appear to have increased survival post‐stocking. A better understanding regarding environmental drivers of growth and specific habitat features used is needed to better predict optimal timing and location of future stockings.  相似文献

It is commonly believed that colonization of early-season cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., by overwintered boll weevils, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman, is concentrated on field margins. However, supporting experimental evidence is not available. In 1999 and 2000, we examined colonization patterns of overwintered boll weevils in Central Texas cotton on the bases of adult collections by a pneumatic sampler and hand collections of abscised infested squares. Samples were taken from sites arranged in a grid that extended inward >70 m from the field margin. Adults were collected from shortly after seedling emergence until the flowering stage, and infested squares were collected during the one-third grown square stage. Despite numerical trends, the numbers of adult weevils collected were not significantly different between years or sexes, or among plant phenological stages. Field-to-field variation among collections was considerable and likely prevented detection of differences among these factors. Spatial patterns represented by adult weevil and infested square collections were examined by logistic regressions fitted to the respective probabilities of weevil detection at each designated sample site. Although we observed trends for slightly decreased probability of weevil detection with increased distance from the field margin, these trends were too weak to be demonstrated statistically. Our results indicate the boll weevil does not consistently exhibit a strong edge-oriented colonization pattern, and that management tactics that are predicated on these patterns, such as border sprays, should be used with caution.  相似文献
