We investigated the patterns of taxonomic (TD) and functional (FD) α and β‐diversities of ants in a mountainous landscape along three dimensions, namely one temporal (seasonal) and two spatial dimensions: between habitats – grassland and forest habitats (horizontal), and among elevation bands (vertical). In addition, we tested the effects of environmental variables (mean elevation and temperature, and normalised difference vegetation index – NDVI) on taxonomic and functional α‐ and β‐diversities.
  2. β diversities among the two spatial dimensions are the main components of TD. Conversely, FD is almost entirely composed by the α‐diversity component, with a very low contribution of β‐diversity.
  3. Regarding environmental drivers, the decrease in temperature caused by increased elevations and seasonal variations had a negative effect on taxonomic α‐diversity. There were no effects of environmental variables on ant functional α‐diversity.
  4. Despite the high turnover of ant species occurring along spatial dimensions, the communities were functionally redundant. The changes in species richness and composition patterns in this mountain were strongly influenced by variables correlated with elevation and habitat structure.
  5. Species composition changed across all dimensions, but the core traits and functions remained unchanged. Differences observed in the composition of ant communities over relatively short geographic distances highlight the importance to conserve the entire mountain, ensuring the maintenance of the ant diversity and associated ecosystem functions.

Architectural analysis of 840 Slovenian walnut (Juglans regia L.) genotypes was performed to determine the most typical and frequent morphological types and to evaluate their vegetative and generative potential. Four branching and fruiting patterns (I-IV) were detected. A 3-year-old fruiting branch, consisting of a 3-year-old shoot plus corresponding 2-year-old and 1-year-old shoots, was used as a structural unit for quantitative analysis. In the intermediate fruit-bearing types with mesotonic and acrotonic branching pattern (types II and III), the total lengths of 3-, 2- and 1-year-old shoots were 385 and 380 cm, respectively, compared with 275 and 253 cm in the terminal and lateral-fruiting types (types I and IV). In type I, 1-year-old shoots had significantly fewer nodes than in other types. In addition, they had a thinner basal diameter than types III and IV, and their angles were the most erect (39 degrees ). Only 0.4 out of 3.6 1-year-old shoots were flowering with one mixed bud with 1.9 female flowers. In type IV, 2-year-old shoots had significantly more nodes and a larger basal diameter than other types. One-year-old shoots in type IV are thicker than those in other types. Ratios between the number of flowering and the total number of 1-year-old shoots were 0.7 in type IV, 0.6 in type III, 0.5 in type II and 0.1 in type I. On 1-year-old shoots in type IV, 1.7 mixed buds with a mean of three female inflorescences per bud were counted. Consequently, the generative potential is highest in type IV and lowest in type I. In types II and III, growth and the ability to bear fruits are more balanced.  相似文献

Rolling-circle replication of plasmid pLS1 is initiated by the plasmid-encoded RepB protein, which has nicking-closing (site-specific DNA strand transferase) enzymatic activity. The leading-strand origin of pLS1 contains two regions, (i) the RepB-binding site, constituted by three directly repeated sequences (iterons or the bind region), and (ii) the sequence where RepB introduces the nick to initiate replication (the nic region). A series of plasmids, belonging to the pLS1 family, show features similar to those of pLS1 and have DNA sequences homologous to the pLS1 nic region. In addition, they all share homologies at the level of their Rep proteins. However, the bind regions of these plasmids are, in general, not conserved. We tested the substrate specificity of purified RepB of pLS1. The RepB protein has a temperature-dependent nicking-closing action on supercoiled pLS1, as well as on recombinant plasmid DNAs harboring the pLS1 nic region. The DNA strand transferase activity of pLS1-encoded RepB was also assayed on two plasmids of the pLS1 family, namely, pE194 and pFX2. DNAs from both plasmids were relaxed by RepB, provided they had a proper degree of supercoiling; i.e., it was necessary to modulate the supercoiling of pE194 DNA to achieve RepB-mediated DNA relaxation. Single-stranded oligonucleotides containing the nic regions of various plasmids belonging to the pLS1 family, including those of pE194 and pFX2, were substrates for RepB. In vitro, the RepB protein does not need to bind to the iterons for its nicking-closing activity.  相似文献

Abstract This review summarises current information on rolling circle replicating plasmids originally isolated from Gram-positive bacteria with a low guanine and cytosine content in their DNA. It focuses on the peculiar biological features of these small, high copy number plasmids that replicate via an asymmetric RC mechanism. The oviposition behavior of single females of Drosophila melanogasterwas studied in population cages over 24 h. Each female shows a different behavior, but they can be arbitrarily separated into those which concentrate their egg laying in only one tube and those which spread it over more than two tubes. A comparison is made between females extracted from the Valdivian population and flies from lines selected for high and low aggregation. When one-tube females were grouped and compared with more-than-one-tube females, the aggregation indices between these groups were significantly different.  相似文献

Promiscuous, rolling-circle replication plasmid pMV158 determines tetracycline resistance to its host and can be mobilized by conjugation. Plasmid pLS1 is a deletion derivative of pMV158 that has lost its conjugative mobilization ability. Both plasmids replicate efficiently and are stably inherited in Streptococcus pneumoniae. We have analyzed the effect of pMV158 and pLS1 carriage on the bacterial growth rate. Whereas the parental plasmid does not significantly modify the cell doubling time, pLS1 slows down the growth of the bacterial host by 8-9%. The bases of the differential burden caused by pMV158 and pLS1 carriage are not yet understood. The negligible cost of the pMV158 parental natural plasmid on the host might explain the prevalence of small, multicopy, rolling-circle replication plasmids, even though they lack any selectable trait.  相似文献

To investigate the radiation sensitivity of the natronobacterium Natronomonas pharaonis in comparison with Escherichia coli strains (N. pharaonis DSM 2160T, E. coli strains AB1157 and K12 lambda s) were exposed to gamma-radiation (60Co-gamma-source, 100 Gy min-1) in the presence of oxygen (air) and under strongly reduced oxygen conditions (argon-saturated medium). After irradiation, the colony-forming ability (dose-survival curves) and the D37 dose were determined. The oxygen content of the solutions containing high NaCl concentrations was measured with an oxygen electrode (Clark electrode). It was found that N. pharaonis can tolerate a remarkably higher irradiation dose than the two E. coli strains (approx. 1.5-fold of K12 lambda s and approx. 4-fold of AB1157). The oxygen enhancement ratio (OER) is 2.8 for N. pharaonis and 2.6 for both E. coli strains. Therefore the higher radiation resistance of the N. pharaonis is not due to the low oxygen content of the cell solution (high salt concentration) but is probably related to the higher DNA repair ability of this archaebacteria strain.  相似文献

Symbiosis, the living‐together of unlike organisms, underlies every major transition in evolution and pervades most ecological dynamics. Among examples of symbioses, the simultaneous occupation of a termite nest by its builder termites and intruding invertebrate species (so‐called termitophily) provides suitable macroscopic scenarios for the study of species coexistence in confined environments. Current evidence on termitophily abounds for dynamics occurring at the interindividual level within the termitarium, but is insufficient for broader scales such as the community and the landscape. Here, we inspect the effects of abiotic disturbance on termitophile presence and function in termitaria at these broader scales. To do so, we censused the termitophile communities inhabiting 30 termitaria of distinct volumes which had been exposed to increasing degrees of fire‐induced disturbance in a savanna‐like ecosystem in southeastern Brazil. We provide evidence that such an abiotic disturbance can ease the living‐together of termitophiles and termites. Putative processes facilitating these symbioses, however, varied according to the invader. For nonsocial invaders, disturbance seemed to boost coexistence with termites via the habitat amelioration that termitaria provided under wildfire, as suggested by the positive correlation between disturbance degree and termitophile abundance and richness. As for social invaders (ants), disturbance seemed to enhance associational defenses with termites, as suggested by the negative correlation between the presence of ant colonies and the richness and abundance of other termitarium‐cohabiting termitophiles. It is then apparent that disturbance‐modulated distinct symbioses in these termite nests.  相似文献
