Conversion of xanthoxin to abscisic Acid by cell-free preparations from bean leaves

Cell-free extracts from the leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris L. convert xanthoxin to abscisic acid. The enzyme activity in dialyzed or acetone-precipitated extracts shows a strong dependence on either NAD or NADP. The enzyme activity appears to be cytosolic with no significant activity observed in chloroplasts. The activity was observed in extracts from roots of Phaseolus vulgaris, and also in extracts prepared from the leaves of Pisum sativum L., Zea mays L., Cucurbita maxima Duchesne, and Vigna radiata L. Neither water stress nor cycloheximide appear to significantly affect the level of enzyme activity in leaves. No intermediates between xanthoxin and abscisic acid were detected.     

Mammalian sulfoconjugate metabolism

Sulfoconjugates occur ubiquitously as sulfopolysaccharides, sulfolipids and sulfoproteins. A variety of sulfotransferases catalyze the sulfation process with 3’-phosphoadenosine 5’-phosphosulfate as the sulfate donor. Sulfatases that catalyze the desulfation of different sulfoconjugates are known to be deficient in a number of genetic storage disorders.     

Resolution of genetic and uterine environmental effects in a family study of new dermatoglyphic measure: sole pattern ridge counts

The heritability of sole pattern ridge counts was examined in two family studies of endogamous castes from peninsular India. The phenotypes included ridge counts for each of the eight configurational areas separately, all areas combined, and only distal areas combined. Differences in heritability estimates were found between populations as well as among the individual configurational areas. Although some ridge counts do not show familial resemblance, others appear to be moderately heritable. Estimates of h2 range from 0.36 to 0.63 in one family series and from 0.22 to 0.51 in the other. In addition, significant uterine environmental effects were detected in one family series but not in the other.
