Based on its proven anabolic effects on bone in osteoporosis patients, recombinant parathyroid hormone (PTH1-34) has been evaluated as a potential therapy for skeletal repair. In animals, the effect of PTH1-34 has been investigated in various skeletal repair models such as fractures, allografting, spinal arthrodesis and distraction
osteogenesis. These studies have demonstrated that intermittent PTH1-34 treatment enhances and accelerates the skeletal repair process via a number of mechanisms, which include effects on mesenchymal
stem cells, angiogenesis, chondrogenesis, bone formation and resorption. Furthermore, PTH1-34 has been shown to enhance bone repair in challenged animal models of aging, inflammatory arthritis and glucocorticoid-induced
bone loss. This pre-clinical success has led to off-label clinical use and a number of case reports documenting PTH1-34 treatment of delayed-unions and non-unions have been published. Although a recently completed phase 2 clinical trial of PTH1-34 treatment of patients with radius fracture has failed to achieve its primary outcome, largely because of effective healing
in the placebo group, several secondary outcomes are statistically significant, highlighting important issues concerning the
appropriate patient population for PTH1-34 therapy in skeletal repair. Here, we review our current knowledge of the effects of PTH1-34 therapy for bone healing, enumerate several critical unresolved issues (e.g., appropriate dosing regimen and indications)
and discuss the long-term potential of this drug as an adjuvant for endogenous tissue engineering. 相似文献

- Animal behavior is elicited, in part, in response to external conditions, but understanding how animals perceive the environment and make the decisions that bring about these behavioral responses is challenging.
- Animal heads often move during specific behaviors and, additionally, typically have sensory systems (notably vision, smell, and hearing) sampling in defined arcs (normally to the front of their heads). As such, head‐mounted electronic sensors consisting of accelerometers and magnetometers, which can be used to determine the movement and directionality of animal heads (where head “movement” is defined here as changes in heading [azimuth] and/or pitch [elevation angle]), can potentially provide information both on behaviors in general and also clarify which parts of the environment the animals might be prioritizing (“environmental framing”).
- We propose a new approach to visualize the data of such head‐mounted tags that combines the instantaneous outputs of head heading and pitch in a single intuitive spherical plot. This sphere has magnetic heading denoted by “longitude” position and head pitch by “latitude” on this “orientation sphere” (O‐sphere).
- We construct the O‐sphere for the head rotations of a number of vertebrates with contrasting body shape and ecology (oryx, sheep, tortoises, and turtles), illustrating various behaviors, including foraging, walking, and environmental scanning. We also propose correcting head orientations for body orientations to highlight specific heading‐independent head rotation, and propose the derivation of O‐sphere‐metrics, such as angular speed across the sphere. This should help identify the functions of various head behaviors.
- Visualizations of the O‐sphere provide an intuitive representation of animal behavior manifest via head orientation and rotation. This has ramifications for quantifying and understanding behaviors ranging from navigation through vigilance to feeding and, when used in tandem with body movement, should provide an important link between perception of the environment and response to it in free‐ranging animals.

Thirty-two strains of opine-utilizing rhizobacteria were evaluated for physiological traits which have been related to plant growth-promoting activity. Tests included antibiosis against two bacterial and eight fungal pathogens of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), production of hydrogen cyanide and fluorescent pigment production. On average, 71 and 12% of the bacteria inhibited the growth of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora and Agrobacterium tumefaciens, respectively. The growth of Botrytis sp. was inhibited by 62% of the bacteria, and half of these produced an inhibition zone of more than 7 mm in diameter. Fusarium solani, Colletotrichum coccodes, Phoma exigua, Verticillium dahliae, F. oxysporum, V. albo-atrum and F. sambucinum were antagonized by 43, 34, 31, 25, 19, 18, and 12% of the bacteria, respectively. Only four strains produce hydrogen cyanide. The inhibition of a plant pathogen was not correlated to the production of fluorescent pigment. No strain produced a hypersensitive reaction whereas only three strains induced soft-rot and two produced polygalacturonase. Cancer is one of the main challenges of the health system around the world. This disease is increasing in developing countries and imposes heavy costs on patients and governments. On the other hand, despite various drugs, the death rate among cancer patients is still high and the current treatments have many harmful effects. In the traditional medicine of different countries, there are many medicinal plants that can be effective in the treatment of cancer. Ferula plants are traditionally used as spices and food or for medicinal purposes. Ferula assa-foetida is one of the famous plants of this genus, which has been used for the treatment of various diseases since ancient times. Among the main compounds of this plant, we can mention monoterpenes, sulfide compounds and polyphenols, which can show different therapeutic effects. This article has been compiled with the aim of collecting evidence and articles related to the anti-cancer effects of extracts, derived compounds, essential oils and nanoparticles containing Ferula assa-foetida. This review article was prepared by searching the terms Ferula assa-foetida and cancer, and relevant information was collected through searching electronic databases such as ISI Web of Knowledge, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Fort unately, the results of this review showed that relatively comprehensive studies have been conducted in this field and shown that Ferula assa-foetida can be very promising in the treatment of cancer. 相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the capacities of 37 fungi to utilize various crown gall opines as their sole carbon and nitrogen source. One strain of Fusarium solani, two of Cylindrocarpon destructans, and six of Cylindrocarpon heteronema catabolized octopine, mannopine, octopinic acid, succinamopine, or a combination of these opines. One C. heteronema and one Fusarium dimerum strain grew only on succinamopine. None of the fungal isolates had the ability to grow on nopaline. The catabolism of opines by fungi was confirmed by the disappearance of the opine from the growth medium and by an increase in final mycelial dry weight with rising initial concentration of test substrate. The use of a fixed dosage schedule was compared with the use of activated clotting time (ACT) for determining heparin and protamine dosages during and after cardiopulmonary bypass disease. Use of the ACT resulted in a statistically significant increase in heparin dosage and a statistically significant reduction of postoperative blood loss. With ACT use, chest tubes were retained for a shorter period of time, and the incidence of serious postoperative hemorrhage was reduced from 44% to 18%. These results confirm the superiority of the ACT method for monitoring intraoperative anticoagulation in pediatric patients with congenital heart disease. 相似文献

Endothelial cells have been implicated as key cells in promoting the pathogenesis and spread of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. This study describes the isolation and culture of rat brain endothelial cells (RBEC) and further evaluates the infectious potential of a Malaysian rat CMV (RCMV ALL-03) in these cultured cells. Brain tissues were mechanically fragmented, exposed to enzymatic digestion, purified by gradient density centrifugation, and cultured in vitro. Morphological characteristics and expression of von Willebrand factor (factor VIII-related antigen) verified the cells were of endothelial origin. RBEC were found to be permissive to the virus by cytopathic effects with detectable plaques formed within 7 d of infection. This was confirmed by electron microscopy examination which proved the existence of the viral particles in the infected cells. The susceptibility of the virus to these target cells under the experimental conditions described in this report provides a platform for developing a cell-culture-based experimental model for studies of RCMV pathogenesis and allows stimulation of further studies on host cell responses imposed by congenital viral infections. 相似文献
