The increased population of the Wild Boar (Sus scrofa L.) in Europe

In this paper the recent population changes of the Wild Boar in different European countries is analysed through the study of hunting statistics. A simultaneous increase in numbers is observed throughout the whole area during the period 1965–1975. From 1975 onwards the population stabilizes itself apart from in peripheral areas like Finland. Potentially favourable factors which play a part in this process are discussed and certain reproductive and dispersive characteristics which favour its invasive behaviour are discussed.     

Changes in the Microflora of Irradiated Petrale Sole (Eopsetta jordani) Fillets Stored Aerobically at 0.5 C

The microfloral changes on irradiated petrale sole fillets during aerobic (packaged with oxygen-permeable film), refrigerated storage were determined by the identification of bacterial and yeast isolates to the generic level. The samples were irradiated at 0.0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 Mrad by use of a cobalt-60 gamma source, were stored at 0.5 C, and were examined periodically for spoilage, total microbial population, and composition. The preirradiation flora of the fresh fillets consisted of coryneforms, Achromobacter, Micrococcus, Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas, and Lactobacillus. Immediately after irradiation, Micrococcus, Achromobacter, coryneforms, and Bacillus were predominant. The flora of the nonirradiated fillets at the time of spoilage consisted of Pseudomonas and Achromobacter. The flora of the irradiated fillets at the time of spoilage consisted of Achromobacter and Trichosporon.     

Possible role of the V3 domain of gp120 in resistance to an amphotericin B derivative (MS8209) blocking human immunodeficiency virus entry.

MS8209, an amphotericin B derivative blocking human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) entry after CD4 binding, neutralized the HIV-2 strains EHO and ROD10 but not ROD(CEM). In the V3 domain of gp120, ROD(CEM) differed from ROD10 at two positions (a threonine instead of an isoleucine at position 312 and an arginine instead of a glutamine at position 329), and drug resistance was conferred to HIV-1 by substitution of the ROD(CEM) V3 but not the ROD10 V3. V3 mutations may prevent the interaction of gp120 with MS8209 or modify the mechanism of virus entry, rendering it less accessible to neutralization.     

Amphotericin B derivative blocks human immunodeficiency virus type 1 entry after CD4 binding: effect on virus-cell fusion but not on cell-cell fusion.

The antiviral effect of MS8209, an amphotericin B derivative, was studied in CD4+ cells transfected with a lacZ gene inducible upon human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. MS8209 was shown to block virus entry after receptor binding and probably before virus-cell membrane fusion, but it had no effect on syncytium formation, although both processes are mediated by HIV-1 envelope proteins and CD4.     

Late treatment with polyene antibiotics can prolong the survival time of scrapie-infected animals.

Amphotericin B (AmB) is one of the few drugs able to prolong survival times in experimental scrapie and delays the accumulation of PrPres, a specific marker of this disease in the brain in vivo. Previous reports showed that the AmB effect is observed only if the drug is administered around the time of infection. In the present study, intracerebrally infected mice were treated with AmB or one of its derivatives, MS-8209, between 80 and 140 days postinoculation. We observed an increased incubation time and a delay in PrPres accumulation and glial fibrillary acidic protein gene expression. Treatment starting at 80 days postinoculation was as efficient as long-term treatment starting the day of inoculation. Our results indicate that polyene antibiotics may interfere, throughout the course of the experimental disease, with the propagation of the scrapie agent.     

Genetic control of igG2a production in the response to sheep erythrocytes

A low IgG2a response in B10 mice during the primary response to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) is described. Analysis of the response in B10 × BALB/c hybrid progenies and in congenic strains indicates that this low response is a dominant phenotype placed under the control of a single Mendelian gene or a group of closely linked genes. This gene(s) is neither linked to CH allotypes orH2 haplotypes, nor is it sex-linked. It can be considered as an isotype- and antigenspecific regulatory gene of the immune response.     

False positive non-synonymous polymorphisms of G-protein coupled receptor genes

Polymorphisms of G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) genes are associated with disease risk and modification, and the response to receptor-directed therapy. Genomic sequencing ( approximately 1700 automated runs) from as many as 120 chromosomes from 60 multiethnic individuals was performed to confirm non-synonymous coding polymorphisms reported in the dbSNP database from 25 randomly selected GPCR genes. These polymorphisms were in regions of the receptors responsible for structural integrity, ligand binding, G-protein coupling and phosphoregulation. However, most of these putative polymorphisms could not be confirmed (false positive rate of 68%). Based on these results, we suggest that the variability of the superfamily is not well defined, and we caution against exclusive reliance on databases for selection of candidate GPCR polymorphisms for disease association and pharmacogenetic studies.     

Highly stereoselective synthesis and biological properties of nucleoside analogues bearing a spiro inserted oxirane ring

Starting from 2',5'-di-O-TBDMS-3'-ketouridine 1 or its thymine analogue 2, both xylo (3-10) and ribo (20) epimers of a series of 3"-substituted 3'-spironucleosides have been obtained in good yields and with a total stereoselectivity. Most new compounds were moderately cytotoxic with in some cases slightly selective antiproliferative activities. None of these compounds was active against HIV, but some other antiviral activities against HSV-2, CMV, EBV, or VZV, in the micromolar range, were noted in specific cases.
