Background
It has been suggested that ethnicity can make a significant difference to the likelihood of thromboembolic stroke related to atrial fibrillation. Ethnic differences have been shown to alter inflammatory and haemostatic factors; however, this may all be confounded by differences in cardiovascular risk factors between different ethnicity. The impact of different ethnicities on the thrombogenic profile is not known. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in markers of inflammation, endothelial function and tissue remodelling between Caucasian and Indian populations with supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).Methods
Patients with structurally normal hearts undergoing catheter ablation for SVT were studied. This study included 23 Australian (Caucasian) patients from the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, Australia and 24 Indian (Indian) patients from the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. Blood samples were collected from the femoral vein, and right and left atria. Blood samples were analysed for the markers of endothelial function (ADMA, ET-1), inflammation (CD40L, VCAM-1, ICAM-1), and tissue remodelling (MMP-9, TIMP-1) using ELISA.Results
The study populations were well matched for cardiovascular risk factors and the absence of structural heart disease. No difference in the echocardiographic measurements between the two ethnicities was found. In this context, there was no difference in markers of inflammation, endothelial function or tissue remodelling between the two SVT populations. Conclusion
Caucasian and Indian populations demonstrate similar inflammatory, endothelial function or tissue remodelling profiles. This study suggests a lack of an impact of different ethnicity in these populations in terms of thrombogenic risk. 相似文献5.

Vanillic acid (VA) is found in high concentrations in various plants and used as traditional medicine for various diseases. The aim of the existing study is to illustrate the protective effects of VA against benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P)‐induced lung cancer in Swiss albino mice. B(a)P (50 mg/kg b.wt.) was given orally to induce lung cancer in mice. The body weight, tumor incidence, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), neuron‐specific enolase (NSE), and enzymatic/nonenzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione) were estimated. Further histochemical investigation through hematoxylin and eosin staining was also carried out. B(a)P administered groups showed increased levels of serum pathological markers CEA, NSE along with reduced final body weight as well as decreased tissue enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants activities, whereas VA treatment (200mg/kg/b.wt) along with B(a)P showed significantly reverted the above changes, which proves as prominent anticancer effects in experimentally induced lung cancer. Overall, these results suggest that VA has an efficient preventive action against B(a)P‐induced lung cancer, and this is attributed to its free‐radical scavenging antioxidant activities. 相似文献

Background
Higher prevalence of atherosclerosis and higher cardiovascular risk is observed in HIV-infected individuals. The biological mechanisms underlying these processes are unclear. Several studies have implicated genetic variants in the inflammatory genes in cardiovascular disease and in HIV natural course infection. Methods & Findings
In this study we have tested the possible association between genetic variants in several inflammatory genes and asymptomatic cardiovascular disease measured by carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) and atherosclerotic plaque presence as dependent variables in 213 HIV-infected individuals. A total of 101 genetic variants in 25 candidate genes have been genotyped. Results were analyzed using Plink and SPSS statistical packages. We have found several polymorphisms in the genes ALOX5 (rs2115819 p = 0.009), ALOX5AP (rs9578196 p = 0.007; rs4769873 p = 0.004 and rs9315051 p = 0.0004), CX3CL1 (rs4151117 p = 0.040 and rs614230 p = 0.015) and CCL5 (rs3817655 p = 0.018 and rs2107538 p = 0.018) associated with atherosclerotic plaque. cIMT mean has been associated with CRP (1130864 p = 0.0003 and rs1800947 p = 0.008), IL1RN (rs380092 p = 0.002) and ALOX5AP (rs3885907 p = 0.02) genetic variants.Conclusions
In this study we have found modest associations between genetic variants in several inflammatory genes and atherosclerotic plaque or cIMT. Nevertheless, our study adds evidence to the association between inflammatory pathway genetic variants and the atherosclerotic disease in HIV-infected individuals. 相似文献7.

A series of potent, benzimidazole-based SCD inhibitors which demonstrate selectivity for the hSCD1 enzyme over the hSCD5 isoform are described. The compounds possess suitable cellular activity and pharmacokinetic properties which render them capable of inhibiting liver SCD activity in a mouse pharmacodynamic assay. These 2-aryl benzimidazoles may serve as valuable tools for studying selective hSCD1-inhibition. 相似文献

Fish meal grades SL1 and SL2 from Sardine (Sardinella longiceps) and NJ from Pink Perch (Nemipterus japonicas) were evaluated as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen in the medium for alkaline protease production by Bacillus pumilus MTCC 7514. The analysis of the fish meal suggests that the carbon and nitrogen contents in fish meal are sufficient to justify its choice as replacement for other nutrients. Protease production increased significantly (4,914 U/ml) in medium containing only fish meal, compared with the basal medium (2,646 U/ml). However, the elimination of inorganic salts from media reduced the protease productivity. In addition, all the three grades of fish meal yielded almost the same amounts of protease when employed as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. Nevertheless, the best results were observed in fish meal SL1 medium. Furthermore, protease production was enhanced to 6,966 U/ml and 7,047 U/ml on scaling up from flask (4,914 U/ml) to 3.7 and 20 L fermenters, respectively, using fish meal (10 g/l). Similarly, the corresponding improvement in productivities over flask (102.38 U/ml/h) was 193.5 and 195.75 U/ml/h in 3.7 and 20 L fermenters, respectively. The crude protease was found to have dehairing ability in leather processing, which is bound to have great environmental benefits. 相似文献
