Background  

One of the greatest challenges facing the early land vertebrates was the need to effectively interpret a terrestrial environment. Interpretation was based on ocular adaptations evolved for an aquatic environment millions of years earlier. The Australian lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri is thought to be the closest living relative to the first terrestrial vertebrate, and yet nothing is known about the visual pigments present in lungfish or the early tetrapods.  相似文献

Indiscriminate discharge of pharmaceutical waste into the aquatic ecosystem may pose serious health challenges to aquatic biota. The effect of acute exposure to ibuprofen was evaluated using changes in behaviour and haematological parameters under static bio-assay method in Clarias gariepinus. Test specimens were exposed to acute concentrations of ibuprofen (0.28, 0.33, 0.38, 0.43 and 0.48 mg l?1) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h durations respectively. Behavioural and phenotypic changes were observed in surviving fish. There were significant (p < 0.05) concentration and duration-dependent increases in erythrocyte (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb), pack cell volume (PCV) and leukocytes (WBC) in treated fish compared to the control. Insignificant decreases (p > 0.05) in mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were observed in treated fish compared to the control. Ibuprofen elicited dose and duration- dependent decrease in neutrophil counts with the decreases being significant (p < 0.05) in the higher doses of 0.43 and 0.48 mg l?1. Ibuprofen did not elicit any significant changes in monocytes, basophils and eosinophils. Changes observed in this study showed that ibuprofen negatively affected the health of the fish and we recommend that discharge of ibuprofen into the aquatic environment should be monitored and controlled.  相似文献

Background

We present a performance per watt analysis of CUDAlign 4.0, a parallel strategy to obtain the optimal pairwise alignment of huge DNA sequences in multi-GPU platforms using the exact Smith-Waterman method.

Results

Our study includes acceleration factors, performance, scalability, power efficiency and energy costs. We also quantify the influence of the contents of the compared sequences, identify potential scenarios for energy savings on speculative executions, and calculate performance and energy usage differences among distinct GPU generations and models. For a sequence alignment on chromosome-wide scale (around 2 Petacells), we are able to reduce execution times from 9.5 h on a Kepler GPU to just 2.5 h on a Pascal counterpart, with energy costs cut by 60%.

Conclusions

We find GPUs to be an order of magnitude ahead in performance per watt compared to Xeon Phis. Finally, versus typical low-power devices like FPGAs, GPUs keep similar GFLOPS/w ratios in 2017 on a five times faster execution.

The effects of light quality on growth, biochemical composition and photosynthetic production in Cyclotella caspia Grunow and Tetraselmis gracilis (Kylin) Butcher were evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions. Cyclotella caspia had the highest values for maximum growth rate in blue-green light, whereas T. gracilis grew faster in red light. The highest cellular contents of chlorophylls [a, (c1 + c2)] and carotenoids of C. caspia were found respectively in red and blue-green light, while protein content did not change in response to spectral quality. Tetraselmis gracilis cells were more stimulated to synthesize pigments and protein when incubated in white light. For both species, pigment ratios showed intermediate values in white regime. The maximum values for photosynthetic rates were obtained in blue-green and red regimes in C. caspia and in red light in T. gracilis. The chromatic adaptive mechanisms shown for both species are compared and discussed in light of recent works presented for different phytoplankters, with emphasis on ecophysiological responses obtained in distinct spectral regimes.  相似文献

The life cycle and behavior of Amblyomma rotundatum were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The experiment started with four engorged females collected from toads (Rhinella schneideri) naturally infested at the Pirapitinga Ecological Station in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Developmental periods of free-living stages were assessed in an incubator at 27 ± 1 °C, >80 % RH and darkness. The complete life cycle, including pre-attachment periods for each parasitic stage, ranged from 126 to 228 days. The pre-attachment, feeding and molting periods increased as the life cycle progressed from larva to adult female. Oviposition lasted about 20 days, with the peak occurring on days 4 and 5. Longevity of nymphs and adult females was quite similar (approximately 250 and 240 days, respectively) and slightly longer than that of larvae. Lesions caused by tick feeding are discussed and a list of known hosts, including new host records for A. rotundatum, is offered.  相似文献
