Cervical spine injuries such as wedge, burst, and tear drop fractures are often associated with compressive axial loads delivered to the human head-neck complex. Understanding the injury mechanisms, the kinematics of the anatomic structure, and the tissue tolerances can improve clinical prognosis and facilitate a better design for anthropomorphic devices. The axial compressive response of human cadaveric preparations was compared with the 50th percentile anthropomorphic Hybrid III manikin under various loading rates. Ten fresh human cadavers were used in the study. Intact cadaver torsos, head-cervical spines, and ligamentous cervical columns were tested. The head-neck structure and the neck (without head) of the Hybrid III manikin were also tested. Responses of the human cadaveric preparations and manikin structures were nonlinear at all rates of loading. However, axial stiffness, a measure of the ability of the structure to withstand external force, was higher under all rates of loading for manikin preparations when compared with the human cadaveric tissues.  相似文献

During an outbreak of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), in California in 1997, nine populations were collected from the major broccoli areas throughout the state. Populations were assayed for their susceptibility to currently used materials (Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki, permethrin, and methomyl) and to newer materials that had not yet been commercially used in California (spinosad, emamectin benzoate, and chlorfenapyr). For the currently used insecticides, elevated levels of resistance were seen only with permethrin and seven of the nine populations had tolerance ratios (TR) of > 100. With the newer chemistries, TR values were all < 15. To compare potential cross-tolerance, TR values of the currently used insecticides were compared with TR values of the newer insecticides. There were significant relationships found between: methomyl and emamectin benzoate, methomyl and spinosad, and permethrin and spinosad. Further biochemical studies are needed to confirm the actual mechanisms that lead to these relationships and field tests are needed to determine what impact, if any, such TR levels would have on control in the field. These data indicate that resistance to at least one of the commonly used insecticides (permethrin) may have played a role in the outbreak during 1997. However, other factors may have been at least equally important. The winter of 1996-1997 was warmer than normal, and during the period from February through August of 1997 the amount of rainfall was < 50% of normal. Hot and dry conditions are known to be conducive to outbreaks of P. xylostella. These data add to an overall knowledge about the geographic variation of resistance in P. xylostella populations within the United States. They also serve as a baseline for monitoring changes in susceptibility to these newer insecticides and can also help explain the occurrence of outbreaks caused by factors other than insecticide resistance.  相似文献

We conducted two studies to improve preservation of rabbit semen. The objective of the first study was determine whether a glucose- and fructose-based extender with two different amounts of gelatin would solidify at 15 degrees C, and to evaluate the influence of gelatin supplementation on sperm motility parameters after storing semen up to 10 days at 15 degrees C. The fertility of rabbit semen diluted in the best gelatin-supplemented extender established in Study 1 and stored for up to 5 days was evaluated in the second study. In Study 1, semen was collected with an artificial vagina from 40 bucks. Each ejaculate was diluted to (80-100) x 10(6) spermatozoa/mL (1:3, semen/extender) at 37 degrees C in one of the three following glucose- and fructose-based extenders: control (standard liquid extender), semi-gel or gel (0.7 or 1.4 g gelatin in 100 mL extender, respectively). Pools of semen were allocated among 0.6 mL plastic artificial insemination (AI) guns. Thirty (10 per extender group) AI doses were immediately analyzed (0 h) and the remainder stored in a refrigerator (15 degrees C) for 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, or 240 h. All doses with gelatin extenders solidified at 15 degrees C. Semen samples, prewarmed to 37 degrees C, were evaluated with a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system. The percentage of motile cells was significantly lower using the liquid compared to the gel extenders during semen storage from 0 to 96 h. Although significance was lost, these differences persisted after 240 h of storage. Motility of spermatozoa in the semi-gel extender was intermediate between that of liquid and gel extender throughout the study. Study 2 was performed on 1250 multiparous lactating does. Five homogeneous groups of 250 does previously synchronized were inseminated using semen previously stored for 120, 96, 72, 48 or 24 h, respectively. Rabbit does receiving 24 h-stored semen (diluted with the control extender used in Study 1) served as controls. The remaining females received seminal doses supplemented with 1.4 g/100mL gelatin (gel extender used in Study 1). Kindling rates for rabbit does inseminated with gelatin-supplemented (solid) semen doses stored for 48 h (88%) or 72 h (83%) were similar to those recorded for liquid controls stored for 24 h (81%), whereas rates significantly decreased when the semen was solid and stored for 96 h (64%) or 120 h (60%) before AI. In conclusion, rabbit spermatozoa were effectively stored in the solid state at 15 degrees C, with fertility preserved for up to 5 days. Solid storage of rabbit semen would facilitate commercial distribution.  相似文献

Biomechanical properties of human lumbar spine ligaments.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Biomechanical properties of the six major lumbar spine ligaments were determined from 38 fresh human cadaveric subjects for direct incorporation into mathematical and finite element models. Anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments, joint capsules, ligamentum flavum, interspinous, and supraspinous ligaments were evaluated. Using the results from in situ isolation tests, individual force-deflection responses from 132 samples were transformed with a normalization procedure into mean force-deflection properties to describe the nonlinear characteristics. Ligament responses based on the mechanical characteristics as well as anatomical considerations, were grouped into T12-L2, L2-L4, and L4-S1 levels maintaining individuality and nonlinearity. A total of 18 data curves are presented. Geometrical measurements of original length and cross-sectional area for these six major ligaments were determined using cryomicrotomy techniques. Derived parameters including failure stress and strain were computed using the strength and geometry information. These properties for the lumbar spinal ligaments which are based on identical definitions used in mechanical testing and geometrical assay will permit more realistic and consistent inputs for analytical models.  相似文献

Pesticide use was simulated to determine the amount and location of pesticide residues within lettuce heads at harvest and to determine whether wrapper leaf removal reduced head residues. Excessive application of insecticides adversely affected head weight and total yield, independent of the direct effects of pests. Highest residues resulted from excessively high field use and minimum preharvest intervals. Wrapper leaf removal resulted in a low or residue-free head across all materials studied.  相似文献

This study is focused to evaluate the threshold of injury to an intervertebral joint based on its mechanical response. The load-deflection behavior of the intervertebral joint indicated non-linear and sigmoidal characteristics with continuously changing stiffness (a measure of the ability to withstand external force). The load corresponding to the point of zero stiffness was identified, according to the classical theories of mechanics, as the maximum load carrying capacity. Further, the initiation of trauma was defined to occur at the point on the load-deflection curve at which the stiffness begins to decrease for the first time. The load, stiffness and energy absorbing capabilities of normal and degenerated intervertebral joints at the initiation of trauma was determined. Axial compressive load experiments were conducted on nine intervertebral joints of fresh human male cadavers and the resulting load-deflection responses were transformed into stiffness-deflection responses using the derivative principle. Energy characteristics were also derived. Load, stiffness and energy at the initiation of trauma were found to be 9.0 kN, 2850 N mm-1, and 10.2 J for normal and 4.4 kN, 1642 N mm-1, and 5.8 J for degenerated segments, respectively. The load and energy values at failure were 11.0 kN, and 18.0 J for normal and 5.3 kN and 5.7 J for degenerated intervertebral joints, respectively.  相似文献
