In bridging the knowledge gap on stress physiology of Nigerian indigenous chickens, this study investigated the effect of exogenous corticosterone (eCORT) as stress inducing agent on the testicular function and mating behavior of Nigerian indigenous cocks. Twenty-four (24) cocks and one hundred and forty four (144) hens (mating ratio of 1 cock: 6 hens) were grouped into four and assigned to each of the four eCORT treatments (0, 2, 4 and 6 mgeCORT/KgBW) daily for 14 days. Semen samples were collected on days 0, 7 and 14 and analyzed for semen volume (SV), progressive sperm motility (PSM), membrane integrity (MI) and sperm abnormality (SA). Mating behaviors were monitored on days 3, 5 and 8. Blood samples, for hormonal (Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Testosterone (TEST) and stress analysis (heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, H/L) were collected from brachial vein on days 7 and 14. On day 15, cocks were euthanized and testes harvested for histomorphometry. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis, one–way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests all in SPSS 23. Administration of 4 mgeCORT/KgBW declined (P<0.05) PSM while 4 mgeCORT/KgBW and 6 mgeCORT/KgBW cocks had reduced (P<0.05) SV and MI with increased SA. Compared to baseline values, progressive sperm motility of cocks administered 6 mgeCORT for 7 and 14 days decreased (P<0.05) by 57.5% and 52.4%, respectively. Exogenous CORT had no significant (P>0.05) influence on the mating behaviors, H/L ratio, FSH and TEST. However, 2 mgeCORT/KgBW enhanced LH levels. Administration of eCORT did not affect the testicular epithelial height and seminiferous tubular diameter. In conclusion, optimal stress induced by eCORT impaired semen quality but with less impact on reproductive hormones, H/L and mating behaviors of intensively raised Nigerian indigenous cocks.  相似文献

The recent outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in West Africa has ravaged many lives. Effective containment of this outbreak relies on prompt and effective coordination and communication across various interventions; early detection and response being critical to successful control. The use of information and communications technology (ICT) in active surveillance has proved to be effective but its use in Ebola outbreak response has been limited. Due to the need for timeliness in reporting and communication for early discovery of new EVD cases and promptness in response; it became imperative to empower the response team members with technologies and solutions which would enable smooth and rapid data flow. The Open Data Kit and Form Hub technology were used in combination with the Dashboard technology and ArcGIS mapping for follow up of contacts, identification of cases, case investigation and management and also for strategic planning during the response. A remarkable improvement was recorded in the reporting of daily follow-up of contacts after the deployment of the integrated real time technology. The turnaround time between identification of symptomatic contacts and evacuation to the isolation facility and also for receipt of laboratory results was reduced and informed decisions could be taken by all concerned. Accountability in contact tracing was ensured by the use of a GPS enabled device. The use of innovative technologies in the response of the EVD outbreak in Nigeria contributed significantly to the prompt control of the outbreak and containment of the disease by providing a valuable platform for early warning and guiding early actions.  相似文献

The histological effect on and stress response of post juvenile Clarias gariepinus exposed to Qua Iboe crude oil and rig wash were investigated. Fish weighing 60–90 g and measuring 16–18 cm were exposed for 7–28 days to 8.00 ml?1 Qua Iboe crude oil and 0.0018 ml–1 rig wash, both being 0.1 of the 96 hr LC50. Blood samples of C. gariepinus were collected every seven days and evaluated for stress by measuring cortisol concentration. The gills and liver were studied and scored for Gill Alteration Index (GAI) and Hepatic Alteration Index (HAI), respectively. There was an increase in cortisol level up to the 7th and 14th day among the group exposed to Qua Iboe crude oil, with a decrease on the 21st and 28th day. The rig wash group increased in cortisol level up to the 7th day and decreased slightly on the 14th day, after which the trend became irregular. The toxic effects of the Qua Iboe crude oil and rig wash were time dependent, as shown by the histopathological alteration index (HAI) of gill and liver. After 28 days of exposure, the gills had irreparable damage due to high frequency of cellular necrosis and degeneration, whereas the liver had from moderate to severe damage due to the high frequency of cellular degeneration and inflammation. Qua Iboe crude oil and rig wash are both toxic to C. gariepinus, therefore their indiscriminate discharge to the environment must be discouraged.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of (TptBu,Me)Yb(BH4)(THF)n (n = 0, 3; n = 1, 4) complexes are reported. The compounds represent rare examples of lanthanide (II) tetrahydroborate complexes. The X-ray crystal structure of complex 4 has been determined and it shows a monomeric, formally seven coordinate ytterbium center, bearing one κ3 bonded TptBu,Me ligand, a tetrahydroborate ligand and a coordinated THF molecule. The tetrahydroborate ligand binds in a κ3 fashion, via three bridging hydrogen atoms. IR spectroscopy data are consistent with the solid-state structure and the corresponding BD4 analog of 4 shows the expected IR isotope shifts. The 1H NMR spectra of 3 and 4 shows one set of resonances each for the BH4 and the pyrazolylborate ligands indicating dynamic solution behavior. For complex 3, although X-ray quality crystals could not be obtained, the IR and NMR data are consistent with its formulation as the solvent-free analog of complex 4 with κ3-bonded BH4 ligand.  相似文献

The activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in 30 fish tissues and 30 meat organs have been determined using high purity germanium (HPGe) detector. For the fish tissues, the mean activity concentrations of 238U and 232Th were highest in Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) with values of 5.31 ± 1.30 and 6.09 ± 0.91 Bq/kg, respectively. The lowest mean activity concentrations of 238U and 232Th were seen in Titus (Scomberomorus tritor) and Croaker (Micropogonias undulatus), Croaker with values of 1.51 ± 2.08 and 64.42 ± 6.33 Bq/kg, respectively. The mean activity concentration of 40K was highest in Micropogonias undulatus and lowest in Tilapia (Oreohronis niloticus) with values of 64.42 ± 6.33 and 6.53 ± 0.98 Bq/kg. For the meat organs, the highest mean activity concentration of 238U, 232Th, and 40K was highest in kidney, liver, and heart, respectively with values of 2.82 ± 0.47, 4.57 ± 0.69, and 52.07 ± 7.81 Bq/kg. Small intestine had the lowest mean activity concentrations of 238U and 232Th with values of 1.14 ± 0.16 and 0.89 ± 0.08 Bq/kg, respectively. Beef had the lowest mean activity concentration of 40K with a value of 17.61 ± 2.14 Bq/kg.  相似文献

Previous studies have revealed that morin (MOR), a neuroactive bioflavonoid, with proven psychotropic and neuroprotective properties reduced schizophrenic-like behaviors in mice. This study further evaluated the ability of MOR to prevent and reverse ketamine-induced schizophrenic-like behaviors and the underlying neurochemical changes and increased oxidative/nitrergic stress in mice. In the preventive protocol, mice received intraperitoneal injection of MOR (100 mg/kg), reference antipsychotic drugs [haloperidol (1 mg/kg), risperidone (0.5 mg/kg)], or saline daily for 14 consecutive days prior to i.p. injection of ketamine (KET) (20 mg/kg/day) from the 8th to the 14th day. In the reversal protocol, the animals received KET or saline for 14 days prior to MOR, haloperidol, risperidone, or saline treatments. Schizophrenic-like behaviors: positive (open-field test), negative (social-interaction test) and cognitive (Y-maze test) symptoms were evaluated. Thereafter, the brain levels of dopamine, glutamate, 5-hydroxytryptamine and acetyl-cholinesterase, as well as biomarkers of oxidative/nitrergic stress were measured in the striatum, prefrontal-cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HC). Morin prevented and reversed KET-induced hyperlocomotion, social and cognitive deficits. Also, MOR or risperidone attenuated altered dopaminergic, glutamatergic, 5-hydroxytryptaminergic and cholinergic neurotransmissions in brain region-dependent manner. The increased malondialdehyde and nitrite levels accompanied by decreased glutathione concentrations in the striatum, PFC and HC in KET-treated mice were significantly attenuated by MOR or risperidone. Taken together, these findings suggest that the anti-schizophrenic-like activity of MOR may be mediated via mechanisms related to attenuation of neurochemical changes and oxidative/nitrergic alterations in mice.  相似文献

Molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. and Enterocytozoon bieneusi has improved our understanding of the transmission of both organisms in humans. In this study, to infer possible infection sources, Cryptosporidium spp. and E. bieneusi in fecal specimens from 90 HIV‐infected patients attending antiretroviral clinics in Lagos, Nigeria were detected and genotyped by PCR and DNA sequencing. Cryptosporidium spp. and E. bieneusi were identified in four and five patients, respectively, including the occurrence of subtype IeA11T3G3 of Cryptosporidium hominis in two patients, subtype IIcA5G3k of Cryptosporidium parvum in one patient, and Type IV of E. bieneusi in four patients. Among the remaining positive patients, one had mixed infection of Cryptosporidium meleagridis and C. hominis and one had mixed E. bieneusi genotypes. These data highlight a possible difference in major transmission routes (anthroponotic vs. zoonotic) between Cryptosporidium spp. and E. bieneusi in HIV+ patients in the study area.  相似文献

Specimens of the characid Brycinus nurse (N = 980) were collected in Asa reservoir, Nigeria, from November 1991 to October 1993. The diet was analyzed from stomach contents using the frequency of occurrence, numerical and gravimetric methods. Fish sex affected occurrence, number and weight of food items. The relative importance index (RI) indicates that diet varied seasonally. There was also a noticeable switch from insectivorous habits in small fish (less than 18 cm) to herbivorous feeding habits in larger fish. The ability of the fish to evolve trophic strategies that ensure optimum foraging despite seasonal changes can account for its success in the lake.  相似文献

Although several reports have demonstrated the acutely toxic and genotoxic effects of landfill leachates in microbial organisms, plants and aquatic animals, the effects of pollutants present in these leachates have not been clarified yet in terrestrial animals. This study mainly aimed to evaluate a potential genetic effect of raw and simulated leachates from Orita-Aperin and Oworonsoki landfills in south-west Nigeria by use of the murine sperm-head abnormality test. These landfills neither have a synthetic membrane liner at the bottom, nor a natural layer of compacted soil with the desired hydraulic conductivity, nor a run-off control system. As a result, the leachates produced are discharged into the environment. Samples designated as Orita-Aperin Raw Leachate (OARL), Orita-Aperin Simulated Leachate (OASL), Oworonsoki Raw Leachate (OWRL) and Oworonsoki Simulated Leachate (OWSL) were analyzed in the sperm-head abnormality test at concentrations (v/v) of 1%, 2.5%, 5%, 10% and 25%. Mice were given 0.5 ml sample per day for five consecutive days by intraperitoneal injection. Each dose group comprised seven mice, and a 5-week exposure period was utilized. The data show that the test mixtures induced a dose-dependent, statistically significant increase (P<0.05) in the number of sperm with abnormal morphology. Physico-chemical analysis of the test samples shows that they contained constituents that are capable of inducing mutation in biologic system. The interaction of some of these constituents with the genetic material in the differentiating cells during spermatogenesis may be responsible for these observations. This is relevant in environmental waste management, and for the assessment of the hazardous effects of the chemicals in landfill leachates.  相似文献

Objective

To evaluate the rate and factors associated with attrition of patients receiving ART in tertiary and secondary hospitals in Nigeria.

Methods and Findings

We reviewed patient level data collected between 2007 and 2010 from 11 hospitals across Nigeria. Kaplan-Meier product-limit and Cox regression were used to determine probability of retention in care and risk factors for attrition respectively. Of 6,408 patients in the cohort, 3,839 (59.9%) were females, median age of study population was 33years (IQR: 27–40) and 4,415 (69%) were from secondary health facilities. The NRTI backbone was Stavudine (D4T) in 3708 (57.9%) and Zidovudine (ZDV) in 2613 (40.8%) of patients. Patients lost to follow up accounted for 62.7% of all attrition followed by treatment stops (25.3%) and deaths (12.0%). Attrition was 14.1 (N = 624) and 15.1% (N = 300) in secondary and tertiary hospitals respectively (p = 0.169) in the first 12 months on follow up. During the 13 to 24 months follow up period, attrition was 10.7% (N = 407) and 19.6% (N = 332) in secondary and tertiary facilities respectively (p<0.001). Median time to lost to follow up was 11.1 (IQR: 6.1 to 18.5) months in secondary compared with 13.6 (IQR: 9.9 to 17.0) months in tertiary sites (p = 0.002). At 24 months follow up, male gender [AHR 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01–1.37, P = 0.038]; WHO clinical stage III [AHR 1.30, 95%CI: 1.03–1.66, P = 0.03] and clinical stage IV [AHR 1.90, 95%CI: 1.20–3.02, p = 0.007] and care in a tertiary hospital [AHR 2.21, 95% CI: 1.83–2.67, p<0.001], were associated with attrition.

Conclusion

Attrition could potentially be reduced by decentralizing patients on ART after the first 12 months on therapy to lower level facilities, earlier initiation on treatment and strengthening adherence counseling amongst males.  相似文献
