Plant species produce litter of varying quality and differ in the quality and quantity of compounds they release from live roots, which both can induce different decomposer growth in the soil. To test whether differences in decomposer growth can forecast the amount of N species acquire from plant litter, as suggested by theory, we grew individuals of three grassland plants—Holcus lanatus, Plantago lanceolata and Lotus corniculatus—in soils into which 15N-labelled litter of either Holcus, Plantago or Lotus was added. We measured the effects of live roots and litter of each species on soil microbes and their protozoan and nematode feeders, and to link decomposer growth and plant nutrient uptake, we measured the amount of N taken up by plants from the added litter. We hypothesised that those species that induce the highest growth of microbes, and especially that of microbial feeders, will also take up the highest amount of N from the litter. We found, however, that although numbers of bacterial-feeding Protozoa and nematodes were on average lower after addition of Holcus than Plantago or Lotus litter, N uptake was higher from Holcus litter. Further, although the effects on Protozoa and bacterial- and fungal-feeding nematodes did not differ between the live plants, litter-N uptake differed, with Holcus being the most efficient compared to Plantago and Lotus. Hence, although microbes and their feeders unquestionably control N mineralization in the soil, and their growth differs among plant species, these differences cannot predict differences in litter-N uptake among plant species. A likely reason is that for nutrient uptake, other species-specific plant traits, such as litter chemistry, root proliferation ability and competitiveness for soil N, override in significance the species-specific ability of plants to induce decomposer growth.  相似文献

Different spatial representations are not stored as a single multipurpose map in the brain. Right brain-damaged patients can show a distortion, a compression of peripersonal and extrapersonal space. Here we report the case of a patient with a right insulo-thalamic disconnection without spatial neglect. The patient, compared with 10 healthy control subjects, showed a constant and reliable increase of her peripersonal and extrapersonal egocentric space representations - that we named spatial hyperschematia - yet left her allocentric space representations intact. This striking dissociation shows that our interactions with the surrounding world are represented and processed modularly in the human brain, depending on their frame of reference.  相似文献

In mammalian cells scavenger receptor class B, type I (SR-BI), mediates the selective uptake of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesteryl ester into hepatic and steroidogenic cells. In addition, SR-BI has a variety of effects on plasma membrane properties including stimulation of the bidirectional flux of free cholesterol (FC) between cells and HDL and changes in the organization of plasma membrane FC as indicated by increased susceptibility to exogenous cholesterol oxidase. Recent studies in SR-BI-deficient mice and in SR-BI-expressing Sf9 insect cells showed that SR-BI has significant effects on plasma membrane ultrastructure. The present study was designed to test the range of SR-BI effects in Sf9 insect cells that typically have very low cholesterol content and a different phospholipid profile compared with mammalian cells. The results showed that, as in mammalian cells, SR-BI expression increased HDL cholesteryl ester selective uptake, cellular cholesterol mass, FC efflux to HDL, and the sensitivity of membrane FC to cholesterol oxidase. These activities were diminished or absent upon expression of the related scavenger receptor CD36. Thus, SR-BI has fundamental effects on cholesterol flux and membrane properties that occur in cells of evolutionarily divergent origins. Profiling of phospholipid species by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry showed that scavenger receptor expression led to the accumulation of phosphatidylcholine species with longer mono- or polyunsaturated acyl chains. These changes would be expected to decrease phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol interactions and thereby enhance cholesterol desorption from the membrane. Scavenger receptor-mediated changes in membrane phosphatidylcholine may contribute to the increased flux of cholesterol and other lipids elicited by these receptors.  相似文献

Scavenger receptor BI, SR-BI, is a physiologically relevant receptor for high density lipoprotein (HDL) that mediates the uptake of cholesteryl esters and delivers them to a metabolically active membrane pool where they are subsequently hydrolyzed. A previously characterized SR-BI mutant, A-VI, with an epitope tag inserted into the extracellular domain near the C-terminal transmembrane segment, revealed a separation-of-function between SR-BI-mediated HDL cholesteryl ester uptake and cholesterol efflux to HDL, on one hand, and cholesterol release to small unilamellar phospholipid vesicle acceptors and an increased cholesterol oxidase-sensitive pool of membrane free cholesterol on the other. To further elucidate amino acid residues responsible for this separation-of-function phenotype, we engineered alanine substitutions and point mutations in and around the site of epitope tag insertion, and tested these for various cholesterol transport functions. We found that changing amino acid 420 from glycine to histidine had a profound effect on SR-BI function. Despite the ability to mediate selective HDL cholesteryl ester uptake, the G420H receptor had a greatly reduced ability to: 1) enlarge the cholesterol oxidase-sensitive pool of membrane free cholesterol, 2) mediate cholesterol efflux to HDL, even at low concentrations of HDL acceptor where binding-dependent cholesterol efflux predominates, and 3) accumulate cholesterol mass within the cell. Most importantly, the G420H mutant was unable to deliver the HDL cholesteryl ester to a metabolically active membrane compartment for efficient hydrolysis. These observations have important implications regarding SR-BI function as related to its structure near the C-terminal transmembrane domain.  相似文献

The forest fragments surrounding the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary (BFMS) in central Ghana shelter small populations of Colobus vellerosus. Little is known about these populations or the ability of the fragments to support them, despite the fact that these fragments represent potentially important habitat for the colobus in this region. We compared the diet of three groups of C. vellerosus in the fragments to two groups in BFMS. We also examined the differences in plant species composition and food abundance among fragments. The study took place from June to November 2003. Dietary data were collected using scan sampling. Plant species composition and food abundance were evaluated using tree plots and large tree surveys. As in BFMS groups, leaves constituted the highest proportion of the diet of fragment groups, yet the colobus in fragments fed on more lianas than did those in BFMS. Over 50% of all species observed eaten by colobus in the fragments were not consumed in BFMS groups during the same season. Food abundance was similar between fragments and BFMS, although species composition differed. There was no relationship between the density of colobus and the density of food trees or percentage of food species, suggesting that other factors may be influencing the number of colobus present. This study highlights the broad dietary range of C. vellerosus, which may be a factor allowing its survival in these fragments.  相似文献
