Seedlings of eleven varieties of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) showed differences in utilization of K+ from a full nutrient solution containing 3.0 mM K+. The K+ content of both roots and shoots was proportional to the fresh weights and dry weights after a week in the nutrient solution. The K+ use-efficiency ratio, which indicates the efficiency of nutrient utilization (mg dry weight produced per mg K+ absorbed), differed significantly among the varieties. There was no correlation between influx of Rb+ and the content of K+. It is suggested that there are wide varietal differences in such genetically-determined properties as ion influx and efflux and net ion transport to the shoot. Further-more, the influx of Rb+ was closely linked to transpiration, probably due to a variety-specific non-metabolic part of Rb+ influx. Varietal differences in influx of Rb+ were more pronounced in high-K+ roots than in low-K+ roots with maximum rate of Rb+ uptake, but the rank of varieties was the same in each case. – Criteria for the selection of K+ use-efficient varieties of barley are discussed.  相似文献

Uptake of Rb+ was investigated in 12-day-old intact plants of sunflower (Helianthus annum L. var. californicus) which had been cultivated or pretreated in nutrient solutions with various K+ concentrations. The relationship between Rb+ influx and K+ concentration of the roots indicated regulation of Rb+ uptake by allosteric inhibition of the uptake mechanism. A constant passive influx occurred contemporaneously with the active uptake as shown by experiments at 0°C or with 2,4-dinitrophenol. The allosteric regulation of ion carrier activity occurred after a time lag of up to 1 h after the change of external solution. In experiments involving Rb+ treatments of K+-deficient plants, the synthesis of carriers for transport of Rb+ could be demonstrated. A model including allosteric regulation of Rb+ uptake in roots is discussed.  相似文献

Consistent, repeatable segregation of plant species along hydrological gradients is an established phenomenon that must in some way reflect a trade‐off between plants' abilities to tolerate the opposing constraints of drought and waterlogging. In C3 species tissue carbon isotope discrimination (δ13C) is known to vary sensitively in response to stomatal behaviour, reflecting stomatal limitation of photosynthesis during the period of active growth. However, this has not been studied at fine‐spatial scale in natural communities. We tested how δ13C varied between species and sexes of individuals in the family Restionaceae growing along a monitored hydrological gradient. Twenty Restionaceae species were investigated using species‐level phylogeny at two sites in the Cape Floristic Region, a biodiversity hotspot. A spatial overlap analysis showed the Restionaceae species segregated significantly (P < 0.001) at both sites. Moreover, there were significant differences in δ13C values among the Restionaceae species (P < 0.001) and between male and female individuals of each species (P < 0.01). However, after accounting for phylogeny, species δ13C values did not show any significant correlation with the hydrological gradient. We suggest that some other variable (e.g. plant phenology) could be responsible for masking a simple response to water availability.  相似文献

The leaf, stem, root, tuber and dropper anatomy of the orchid tribe Diseae (including the subtribes Satyriinae, Disinae, Brownlecinac, Huttonaeinae and Coryciinae) is reviewed. The study is largely based on investigations of 123 species, and data from several previous publications have also been incorporated. Two characters were identified as being taxonomically valuable: (1) the presence of sclerenchyma caps associated with leaf vascular bundles, and (2) the degree of dissection of the siphonostele of the tuber ('polystelic' or 'monostelic'). The phylogenetic analysis shows that anatomical characters do not change the basic structure of a cladogram that is based on morphological characters. The taxa of Diseae are discussed on the basis of anatomical data. Subtribes Satyriinae (excluding the anatomically unusual genus Pachites), Brownleeinae, Huttonaeinae, and Coryciinae are uniform in. critical anatomical characters. However, subtribe Disinae is rather diverse in vegetative anatomy. Disa sect. Micranthae differs from the rest of the genus in its leaf anatomy. The occurrence of foliar sclerenchyma bundle caps and 'polystelic' tubers supports the incorporation of Herschelianthe in Disa sect. Stenocarpa.  相似文献

An improved understanding of the response of forest ecosystems to elevated levels of CO2 in the atmosphere is crucial because atmospheric CO2 concentration continues to increase at an accelerating rate and forests are an important sink in the global carbon cycle. Several CO2‐enrichment experiments have now been running for more than 10 years, with highly variable short‐term results after the first decade. Responses to rising [CO2] over the next few decades will depend on several plant and ecosystem feedbacks that are inadequately understood. In this study, we conduct a sensitivity analysis, within the context of the simulated CO2 response, using a new version of the G'DAY ecosystem model, with an improved decomposition submodel, applied to a nitrogen‐limited Norway spruce forest site in the north of Sweden. The new decomposition model incorporates important modifications to soil processes, including some that constitute negative feedbacks on an ecosystem's growth response to elevated [CO2]. The sensitivity analysis reveals key parameters and processes that are important for the simulated CO2 response on the short term and others that are more important on the long term. A process that has a strong impact on the short‐term response is a change in decomposer composition, potentially in response to altered litter quality. Parameters that become increasingly important in the long term are carbon allocation to root exudates that are directly or indirectly associated with atmospheric N2 fixation, and the rate of humification of soil organic matter. We identify factors intrinsic to species and site (microbes and resources) and ecosystem nutrient supply that determine the duration of the enhanced simulated growth response to elevated [CO2].  相似文献

The objective of the study was to investigate the interactive effects of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, [CO2], and temperature on the wood properties of mature field-grown Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) trees. Material for the study was obtained from an experiment in Flakaliden, northern Sweden, where trees were grown for 3 years in whole-tree chambers at ambient (365 μmol mol−1) or elevated [CO2] (700 μmol mol−1) and ambient or elevated air temperature (ambient +5.6 °C in winter and ambient +2.8 °C in summer). Elevated temperature affected both wood chemical composition and structure, but had no effect on stem radial growth. Elevated temperature decreased the concentrations of acetone-soluble extractives and soluble sugars, while mean and earlywood (EW) cell wall thickness and wood density were increased. Elevated [CO2] had no effect on stem wood chemistry or radial growth. In wood structure, elevated [CO2] decreased EW cell wall thickness and increased tracheid radial diameter in latewood (LW). Some significant interactions between elevated [CO2] and temperature were found in the anatomical and physical properties of stem wood (e.g. microfibril angle, and LW cell wall thickness and density). Our results show that the wood material properties of mature Norway spruce were altered under exposure to elevated [CO2] and temperature, although stem radial growth was not affected by the treatments.  相似文献

The rate of light saturated photosynthesis of Nitzschia palea was reduced by crude oil, naphthalene and benzene. A decrease in the rate of photosynthesis at weak irradiance was also found with crude oil and naphthalene and high concentrations of benzene. On a mg/1 basis naphthalene decreased photosynthesis to a greater extent than did crude oil and crude oil to a greater extent than did benzene. A linear proportionality was found between the decrease in light saturated photosynthesis and the concentrations of aromatic hydrocarbons. The effects on photosynthesis were generally reversible, but a concentration of 700 mg benzene/1 stopped photosynthesis completely and irreversibly.  相似文献

Components of the initial uptake and active transport of rubidium were studied in potassium-starved and potassium-rich wheat plants. A metabolism-linked component of the initial uptake in the root was identified by means of DNP-treatment. It was shown that there is a direct proportionality between the magnitude of the metabolism-linked component of the initial uptake and the rate of active uptake. It is suggested that, in the free space, this metabolism-linked ion binding represents an initial step of the active ion transport preceding the subsequent carrier-mediated transport across the plasmalemma.  相似文献

The various methods for chlorophyll determination, found in the literature, may give chlorophyll values differing by as much as 20%. Not only the choice of solvent and equations but also the routines and conditions for processing of samples can be large sources of errors. In the present paper some recommendations are given concerning sampling and storage of plant material, extraction and determination of chlorophylls. A simple and fast method for chlorophyll determinations is described and recommended as a suitable method for most ecological and eco-physiological investigations in which chlorophylls are determined. The principle of the method is that the total amount of chlorophylls is determined in a colorimeter calibrated for chlorophyll measurements. Results from a prototype of the “Chlorophyllometer” are presented and compared with spectrophotometric determinations.  相似文献
