Are Roots a Source of Abscisic Acid for the Shoots of Flooded Pea Plants?   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
Flooding the soil for 2–5 d decreased stomatal conductancesof pea plants (Pisum sativum L., cv. Sprite) with six or sevenleaves. This coincided with slower transpiration, increasedleaf water potentials and increased concentrations of abscisicacid (ABA) in the leaves. No increase in ABA was found in theterminal 20 mm of roots of flooded plants over the same timeperiod. Small stomatal conductances associated with increases in foliarABA were also found in plants grown in nutrient solution whenaeration was halted, causing the equilibrium partial pressuresof dissolved oxygen to fall below 05 It Pa. No increase in ABAconcentration in young secondary roots of the non-aerated plantswas detected after 24, 48 or 72 h, even when the shoot, thepresumed site of deposition for any ABA from the roots, wasremoved 5–6 h before analysis. Similarly, ABA concentrations in roots were not increased whenthe nutrient solution was de-oxygenated by continuous purgingwith nitrogen gas. The abscisic acid concentration in leaf epidermis,the tissue most likely to be the recipient of any ABA movingin the transpiration stream from oxygen-deficient roots, waslower than in the remaining parts of the leaf when examinedin the mutant Argenteum which possesses easily removable epidermallayers. It is concluded that the leaves of plants subjectedto flooding of the soil or oxygen shortage in the root environmentare not enriched substantially with ABA from the roots. Role of Cytokinin in Vessel Regeneration in Wounded Coleus Internodes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Cytokinin was found to be a controlling or limiting factor invessel regeneration around a wound in internodes of Coleus blumeiBenth. in which the endogenous cytokinin level was minimized.The cytokinin was applied in aqueous solution to the base ofexcised, mature internodes that had an active vascular cambium.Each internode also received IAA in lanolin at its apical end.Under low (0.1 %, w/w) or high (10%, w/w) auxin concentrations,the control internodes (without exogenous cytokinin) exhibitedsmall amounts of vessel regeneration. At appropriate concentrationszeatin, kinetin and 6-benzylamino-purine (BAP) induced a significantincrease in vessel regeneration around the wound. The threecytokinins also induced novel patterns of supplementary regenerationfurther from the wound surface. Kinetin and BAP showed the strongestpromoting effect at 5 and 10 µg ml–1, while zeatinwas most effective at 20 µg ml–1. At a low (0.1%) auxin level zeatin was the most effective cytokinin, whereaskinetin was the most effective one at high (1 %) auxin. An inhibitoryeffect on vessel regeneration was observed at the highest kinetinconcentration tested (50 µg ml–1). The regenerationof vessels induced by cytokinin was very polar. Many more regeneratedvessel members differentiated below the wound than above it,and the regeneration process proceeded acropetally from thebase of the internode to its upper parts. Our results implya basipetal polar increase in cambium responsiveness along thestem axis from internode 5 to 7. The possible significance ofsuch a basipetal increase in cambium sensitivity in wood formationin trees is discussed. The social organization and behaviour of the Hoatzin Opisthocomus hoazin , a cooperatively-breeding folivorous bird, was studied in the central plains (llanos) of Venezuela. In this area Hoatzins nested in communal social units of two to eight individuals. Units were usually composed of a breeding pair and up to six helpers at the nest. Helpers, usually offspring retained from the previous years' nesting, aided in all breeding activities of their social unit except egg production. On the study site, Hoatzin units defended extremely small, all-purpose territories along watercourses during the rainy (breeding) season, but migrated up to 2 km to areas with permanent water during the dry season. Nesting extended from early May to October. Nest and egg measurements and growth rates of young are provided. Nesting success was low (27%), primarily due to predation by Cebus olivaceus and several other species. Annual survival of adults and young was high. Young did not breed during their first year; 90% of yearlings remained on their natal territories as helpers. Females appear to be the dispersing sex. The results are discussed in relation to previous work on the Hoatzin. The demography of the study population fits the criteria for several recent theories regarding the evolution of cooperative breeding in birds.  相似文献

Recent progress in the elucidation of the behavioral mechanismsresponsible for maintaining the steady state in a termite colonyis discussed. It is pointed out that various homeostatic mechanismshave common behavioral mechanisms. The mechanisms involved innest repair and construction, foraging, defense, and generalmass movements within nests are explained. An experiment isdescribed in which differential responses to a discrete simplestimulus (heat) are made by two different castes of Nasulitermescorniger and the homeostatic significance emphasized. The factorsin volved in foraging behavior in Reticulitermes are described.An hypothesis for the significance of the behavioral phenomenonof head-banging in termites is put forward: it is consideredto be connected with the maintenance of accelerated activityin a colony after "General Alarm".  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A procedure was developed to purify a coated vesicle fraction from the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei. Electron microscopy revealed a difference between T. brucei coated vesicles and clathrin-coated vesicles from other eukaryotes: trypanosome vesicles were larger (100 to ISO nm in diameter) and contained an inner coat of electron-dense material in addition to the external coat. Evidence suggests that the internal coat is the parasite's variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) coat. The SDS-PAGE analysis shows the major protein of T. brucei coated vesicles has a molecular mass of 61 kD, similar to VSG; this protein was recognized in an immunoblot by anti-VSG serum. Trypanosome coated vesicles also contain a protein which comigrates with the major protein (clathrin) of coated vesicles purified from rat brains. However, this protein is a minor component and it is not serologically cross-reactive with mammalian clathrin. Immunoblot analysis demonstrated that the parasite vesicles contained host IgG, IgM, and serum albumin.  相似文献

Abstract Fire frequency is the number of fires experienced by a particular community within a given time period. This concept can potentially be resolved into a number of interacting variables, including: time since the most recent fire, the length of the inter-fire intervals, and the variability of the length of the inter-fire intervals. We estimated the effects of these three variables on the floristic composition of 65 samples from dry sclerophyll vegetation with different fire histories in Brisbane Water, Ku-ring-gai Chase and Royal National Parks near Sydney. Our analyses suggest that fire frequency may account for about 60% of the floristic variation among our samples. They confirm the hypothesis that the recent (<30 years) fire frequency produces effects on floristic composition of fire-prone communities that can recognizably be attributed both to the time since the most recent fire and to the length of the intervals between fires. These effects are equal in magnitude but are different in the nature of the floristic variation they are associated with. Increasing time-since-fire is associated with a decline in the evenness of fire-tolerant species, indicating that fewer of these species come to dominate the community in the prolonged absence of fire. Herbs and small shrubs decrease in abundance, while larger shrubs increase in abundance. Inter-fire intervals of decreasing length are associated with a decrease in the evenness of the fire-sensitive species, particularly those large Proteaceae shrubs that often dominate the community biomass in dry sclerophyll shrublands of southeastern Australia. Furthermore, the variation associated with inter-fire intervals is not necessarily solely related to the shortest inter-fire interval, but is related to combinations of inter-fire intervals through time. Thus, increasing variability of the length of the inter-fire intervals is associated with an increase in the species richness of both fire-sensitive and fire-tolerant species, implying that it may be variation of the inter-fire intervals through time that is primarily responsible for maintaining the presence of a wide variety of plant species in a particular community. Our results also suggest that the floristic variation associated with different inter-fire intervals decreases with increasing time-since-fire.  相似文献

1. In the mid-1970s, Hynes (1975) wrote eloquently about the complex interactions between aquatic and terrestrial systems. Central theories in stream ecology developed thereafter have dealt with the longitudinal flow of energy, materials and organisms in streams, and, with the exception of the flood pulse concept (Junk, Bayley & Sparks, 1989), have largely ignored areas outside the riparian zone. The structure of the upland and activities occurring there play a more important part than previously recognized in regulating community structure and ecosystem processes in streams.
2. These new perspectives are made possible by developments in hierarchy theory, patch dynamics, and the refinement of tools used to quantify spatial and temporal heterogeneity.
3. Geographical information systems (GIS), image processing technology and spatial statistical techniques allow quantitative assessment of lateral, longitudinal and vertical components of the landscape that interact at several spatial and temporal scales to influence streams. When GIS is used in concert with geostatistics, multivariate statistics, or landscape models, complex relationships can be elucidated and predicted.
4. To a certain extent, the tools discussed above have only automated functions that were previously performed manually. This suite of tools has improved the ability of aquatic ecologists to examine relationships and test theories over larger, more heterogeneous regions than were previously possible.
5. At the local, state and federal level, management and regulatory frameworks are currently being re-evaluated to incorporate this new perspective in resource management and policy decision making.
6. We will discuss current and future trends in technologies and tools used for aquatic ecosystem research, and the use of techniques as they are applied in these regional assessments are also discussed.  相似文献
