The cyclocrinitids are an extinct tribe of dasycladacean green algae. They were anatomically very similar to certain Recent dasyclads, even at early growth stages. The morphology and preservation of cyclocrinitids strongly suggest that they had a siphonous cellular organization with extracellular, aragonitic calcification; these features are characteristic of living dasyclads. The light surficial calcification of cyclocrinitids and other dasyclads had important paleoecological effects. It restricted them to low-energy waters, as it provided relatively little structural support. It also confined them to warm, tropical waters; they are good paleoequatorial indicators. The decline of these algae during the late Ordovician and early Silurian may therefore reflect the simultaneous cooling and glaciation. Receptaculitids are entirely unrelated organisms. Their meroms have several distinctive features; they are not homologous to the lateral branches of cyclocrinitids or dasyclads. Receptaculitid calcification was extensive and their thalli were apparently quite sturdy; they often occurred in reefs. Receptaculitids also lived in high-latitude, cold-water environments. Thus, they were ecologically unlike any calcareous green algae, and cannot be used as paleoequatorial indicators. Abstract. 1. The causes and reproductive consequences of body size variation of Brachinus lateralis Dejean, a parasitic carabid beetle, were investigated.
2. Body size variation occurs within and between sites. Host size has a major influence on body size of the adult.
3. Fecundity is positively correlated with body size. Egg size is not correlated with body size.
4. Mating males tend to be larger than non-mating males. There is a positive correlation of body sizes in mating pairs.
5. Limited opportunity for host choice may maintain size variation despite the advantages of large size.
6. The non-random patterns of mating for a species without obvious intrasexual aggression suggest that subtle means of male-male competition or female choice may be important.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Microhabitat preferences of predatory stoneflies and four prey taxa were assessed by taking benthic samples along a hydraulic gradient in a Black Forest stream in West Germany. Densities of predator and prey species were estimated at twenty-one hydraulic regimes.
2. Enclosures containing the stonefly, Dinocras cephalotes , and control cages with no predators were placed in the substrate at hydraulic regimes favourable and unfavourable to predators. Cages received initial prey communities that were obtained from benthic samples taken at hydraulic regimes matching those intended for each cage.
3. Population densities of the two most numerically important prey taxa, the mayfly. Baetis rhodani , and the Chironomidae, were reduced in the presence of Dinocras , but only when enclosures were placed in the hydraulic regimes favourable to the predator. Thus, predation effects increased as the hydraulic regime became more benign to the predators.
4. Densities of two other prey species rare in the diets of Dinocras ( Hydropsyche instabilis and Gammarus fossarum ) were generally unaffected by predators regardless of the hydraulic regime.
5. These data provide support for the hypothesis that perception of the abiotic regime as harsh or benign to predators is a good predictor of predator impact on densities of preferred prey species. In harsher abiotic regimes, impact will be low, while impact will be high in benign abiotic regimes.  相似文献

Tumor and embryonic cell surfaces are examined in this symposiumwith respect to their roles in cell-cell interactions and inearly development and malignancy. Three sets of studies havebeen recently performed in my laboratory to help elucidate thenature of tumor and embryonic cell surfaces and the means bywhich these cells adhere to each other. We separated an in vivo129/J ascites mouse teratoma into specific subpopuladons ofcells by velocity sedimentation in shallow density gradients.The teratoma consistently separated into two major populations:"large" and "small" cells. Only the large cells displayed "malignant-like"surface characteristics in terms of their agglutinability withcarbohydrate binding lectins. The teratoma cells were also synchronizedin culture with thymidine plus colcemid. In these synchronizedcultures, cellular adhesiveness and glutamine synthetase specificactivity displayed oscillatory patterns with peaks of glutaminesynthetase specific activity occurring just prior to peaks ofadhesivenesss. Also, both glutamine synthetase specific activityand cellular adhesiveness were enhanced by two compounds: actinomycinD and hydrocortisone. Based upon previous work that implicatesL-glutamine in intercellular adhesion, it is not unreasonableto speculate that glutamine synthetase specific activity andcellular adhesiveness may be causally related. The problem ofaltered tumor cell adhesiveness is important because it seems,in part, to be responsible for tumor spread. Finally, the seaurchin embryo system was utilized to identify specific cellsurface carbohydrates that may be involved in intercellularadhesion. In 15 separate experiments with each sugar and with15 different saccharides, D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-galactosaminewere the best inhibitors of rotation-medicated reaggregationof 24-hr sea urchin embryo cells dissociated by removal of divalentcations. ß-galactosidase also inhibited reaggregationof these cells. These results implicate galactopyranosyl-likeresidues in the adhesion of 24-hr sea urchin embryo cells witheach other.  相似文献

Variability in factors causing light attenuation in Lake Victoria   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. The major optical components controlling the attenuation of photosynthetic available radiation in nearshore areas of Lake Victoria (Uganda and Kenya) were examined and their impact compared. It was found that chromophoric dissolved organic matter and tripton play a dominating role in many nearshore areas, indicating that the coastal areas of Lake Victoria cannot be considered as Case I waters.
2. Concentrations of chromophoric dissolved organic matter declined with distance from the coast in an exponential manner indicating dilution and degradation of terrestrial sources of organic matter rather than in situ production. The importance of tripton was found to follow a similar pattern, while the relative importance of phytoplankton biomass in overall attenuation of photosynthetic available radiation was found to increase with distance from the coast. A specific attenuation coefficient for phytoplankton biomass was determined (0.019 m2 mg Chl a −1).
3. Using a light limitation approach based on carrying capacity, it was possible to map areas that are closer to being light limited. Light limitation appears to occur throughout most bays and some coastal areas receiving catchment waters. This spatial information, geographically referenced to bathymetric and catchment conditions, was utilized to understand the importance of environmental conditions in limiting phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

FLUXNET and modelling the global carbon cycle   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Measurements of the net CO2 flux between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere using the eddy covariance technique have the potential to underpin our interpretation of regional CO2 source–sink patterns, CO2 flux responses to forcings, and predictions of the future terrestrial C balance. Information contained in FLUXNET eddy covariance data has multiple uses for the development and application of global carbon models, including evaluation/validation, calibration, process parameterization, and data assimilation. This paper reviews examples of these uses, compares global estimates of the dynamics of the global carbon cycle, and suggests ways of improving the utility of such data for global carbon modelling. Net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) predicted by different terrestrial biosphere models compares favourably with FLUXNET observations at diurnal and seasonal timescales. However, complete model validation, particularly over the full annual cycle, requires information on the balance between assimilation and decomposition processes, information not readily available for most FLUXNET sites. Site history, when known, can greatly help constrain the model‐data comparison. Flux measurements made over four vegetation types were used to calibrate the land‐surface scheme of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies global climate model, significantly improving simulated climate and demonstrating the utility of diurnal FLUXNET data for climate modelling. Land‐surface temperatures in many regions cool due to higher canopy conductances and latent heat fluxes, and the spatial distribution of CO2 uptake provides a significant additional constraint on the realism of simulated surface fluxes. FLUXNET data are used to calibrate a global production efficiency model (PEM). This model is forced by satellite‐measured absorbed radiation and suggests that global net primary production (NPP) increased 6.2% over 1982–1999. Good agreement is found between global trends in NPP estimated by the PEM and a dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM), and between the DGVM and estimates of global NEE derived from a global inversion of atmospheric CO2 measurements. Combining the PEM, DGVM, and inversion results suggests that CO2 fertilization is playing a major role in current increases in NPP, with lesser impacts from increasing N deposition and growing season length. Both the PEM and the inversion identify the Amazon basin as a key region for the current net terrestrial CO2 uptake (i.e. 33% of global NEE), as well as its interannual variability. The inversion's global NEE estimate of −1.2 Pg [C] yr−1 for 1982–1995 is compatible with the PEM‐ and DGVM‐predicted trends in NPP. There is, thus, a convergence in understanding derived from process‐based models, remote‐sensing‐based observations, and inversion of atmospheric data. Future advances in field measurement techniques, including eddy covariance (particularly concerning the problem of night‐time fluxes in dense canopies and of advection or flow distortion over complex terrain), will result in improved constraints on land‐atmosphere CO2 fluxes and the rigorous attribution of mechanisms to the current terrestrial net CO2 uptake and its spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Global ecosystem models play a fundamental role in linking information derived from FLUXNET measurements to atmospheric CO2 variability. A number of recommendations concerning FLUXNET data are made, including a request for more comprehensive site data (particularly historical information), more measurements in undisturbed ecosystems, and the systematic provision of error estimates. The greatest value of current FLUXNET data for global carbon cycle modelling is in evaluating process representations, rather than in providing an unbiased estimate of net CO2 exchange.  相似文献
