Gecarcinus lateralis can take moisture from a clamp substratumin amounts adequate for the needs of the entire intermolt cycle.It can also rehydrate in this way, even after severe dehydration. This crab is able to survive for many months when free waterof a wide range of salinities (0.30; = parts per thousand)is made available in a shallow dish. The crab dies within sevenweeks when the salinity of this water is 35. During proecdysisthe pericardial sacs of eyestalkless crabs become most swollenwhen the salinity of the available water is 15 or 23, and survivalduring and after ecdysis is greatest with water of 15. A crab in proecdysis shows no increase in the rate at whichwater enters following dehydration. Yet large amounts of waterare retained, particularly at the intermediate salinities. Maximalswelling of the pericardial sacs just prior to ecdysis is essentiallyequivalent in crabs with eyestalks, in eyestalkless crabs, andin eyestalkless crabs that have received an implant of centralnervous tissue. Hence, we conclude that a hormone causing theretention of water exists, but not in the eyestalks, in thebrain, or in the thoracic ganglionic mass. At ecdysis eyestalkless crabs show large increases in the dimensionsof the carapace, while crabs with eyestalks and eyestalklesscrabs that have received an implant of certain central nervoustissues show much less increase and may even show a decrease.Thus, we conclude that a hormone causing a release of waterat ecdysis is produced in the central nervous system. The advantages to the crab of a dual hormonal control of itswater balance are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract 1. It has become apparent that predators may strongly decrease prey fitness without direct contact with the prey, as they induce the development of defence systems that limit the availability of energy for growth and reproduction. Recent studies suggest that stress proteins may help prey organisms deal with this stress. The pattern is not general, however, and little is known about species differences in physiological traits in coping with predator stress, and covariation of physiological with other antipredator traits. 2. To explore these issues, we quantified levels of constitutive and fish‐induced stress proteins (Hsp60 and Hsp70) and anti‐predator behaviours in larvae of two damselfly species that differ in lifestyle. Both stress proteins were fixed at higher levels in Erythromma najas, which has a slow lifestyle, than in Lestes sponsa, which has a fast lifestyle. Similarly, anti‐predator behaviours were fixed at safer levels in E. najas than in L. sponsa. 3. These results suggest that stress proteins may be part of anti‐predator syndromes of damselfly larvae, and there may be trait co‐specialisation between stress proteins and behavioural anti‐predator traits. Studies formally testing these hypotheses in more species may prove rewarding in advancing our understanding of the functional integration of physiological anti‐predator traits in relation to the prey’s lifestyle.  相似文献

The skeletal morphology of Paraorthacodus jurensis, a Late Jurassic neoselachian from Nusplingen, is described based on the incomplete holotype and a newly discovered almost complete specimen. For the first time, the postcranial skeleton could be investigated. Paraorthacodus is characterized by a monognath dental heterodonty and tearing‐type dentition. The number of lateral cusplets in the lateral teeth differs between the holotype and the new specimen, possibly indicating sexual dimorphism. Clasper organs are not preserved in either of the two specimens. The notochord is sheathed by about 123 well‐calcified vertebral centra. The posterior‐most caudal vertebrae are lacking. The transition from monospondylous thoracic to diplospondylous abdominal vertebrae occurs at centra 48 and 49. The origin of the caudal fin is at the 80th centrum. Most conspicuous is the presence of a single spineless dorsal fin. In this respect, Paraorthacodus differs from most palaeospinacids, but resembles Macrourogaleus. Palidiplospinax possibly is sister to a group comprising Synechodus, Paraorthacodus, and Macrourogaleus (the Palaeospinacidae). A reinterpretation of dental and skeletal characters of synechodontiform taxa indicates that Synechodontiformes and Palaeospinacidae are monophyletic groupings of basal neoselachians. Synechodontiformes is probably sister to all living elasmobranchs.  相似文献

Increased plant productivity under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations might increase soil carbon (C) inputs and storage, which would constitute an important negative feedback on the ongoing atmospheric CO2 rise. However, elevated CO2 often also leads to increased soil moisture, which could accelerate the decomposition of soil organic matter, thus counteracting the positive effects via C cycling. We investigated soil C sequestration responses to 5 years of elevated CO2 treatment in a temperate spring wheat agroecosystem. The application of 13C‐depleted CO2 to the elevated CO2 plots enabled us to partition soil C into recently fixed C (Cnew) and pre‐experimental C (Cold) by 13C/12C mass balance. Gross C inputs to soils associated with Cnew accumulation and the decomposition of Cold were then simulated using the Rothamsted C model ‘RothC.’ We also ran simulations with a modified RothC version that was driven directly by measured soil moisture and temperature data instead of the original water balance equation that required potential evaporation and precipitation as input. The model accurately reproduced the measured Cnew in bulk soil and microbial biomass C. Assuming equal soil moisture in both ambient and elevated CO2, simulation results indicated that elevated CO2 soils accumulated an extra ~40–50 g C m?2 relative to ambient CO2 soils over the 5 year treatment period. However, when accounting for the increased soil moisture under elevated CO2 that we observed, a faster decomposition of Cold resulted; this extra C loss under elevated CO2 resulted in a negative net effect on total soil C of ~30 g C m?2 relative to ambient conditions. The present study therefore demonstrates that positive effects of elevated CO2 on soil C due to extra soil C inputs can be more than compensated by negative effects of elevated CO2 via the hydrological cycle.  相似文献

Upon attack by leaf herbivores, many plants reallocate photoassimilates below ground. However, little is known about how plants respond when the roots themselves come under attack. We investigated induced resource allocation in maize plants that are infested by the larvae Western corn rootworm Diabrotica virgifera virgifera. Using radioactive 11CO2, we demonstrate that root‐attacked maize plants allocate more new 11C carbon from source leaves to stems, but not to roots. Reduced meristematic activity and reduced invertase activity in attacked maize root systems are identified as possible drivers of this shoot reallocation response. The increased allocation of photoassimilates to stems is shown to be associated with a marked thickening of these tissues and increased growth of stem‐borne crown roots. A strong quantitative correlation between stem thickness and root regrowth across different watering levels suggests that retaining photoassimilates in the shoots may help root‐attacked plants to compensate for the loss of belowground tissues. Taken together, our results indicate that induced tolerance may be an important strategy of plants to withstand belowground attack. Furthermore, root herbivore‐induced carbon reallocation needs to be taken into account when studying plant‐mediated interactions between herbivores.  相似文献

  • 1 Recently, Hughes et al. (Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 23 , 672–677, 2008) have theorised that symbionts of large, long‐lived, homeostatic, and well defended social insect colonies should mostly be of low virulence. If the symbionts are rare, i.e. few workers are co‐infected, competition between symbionts should be minimal and they should be selected to avoid over‐exploiting their hosts.
  • 2 Here we analyse the mites that occur on Eciton burchellii army ant workers and note that our findings are consistent with the predictions from evolutionary theory.
  • 3 The mites were species diverse but rare; only 5% of the 3146 workers we examined from 20 army ant colonies had mites. Only one worker was co‐infected by mites of different species and the one relatively common parasitic mite (Rettenmeyerius carli) was limited to only two individuals per ant.
  • 4 We also showed that certain mites are more common on workers in nomadic rather than statary army ant colonies and that different worker castes differed in their infestation patterns.
  • 5 We suggest that the three traits E. burchellii and honey bees (Apis mellifera) have in common (queens with very high mating frequencies, propagation by colony fission, and low number of parasites among the mite species they host) are associated with one another. Colonies that fission are likely to inherit symbionts and multiple mating will promote genetic diversity within colonies, which may help to limit the abundance of deleterious mites.
  • 6 We conclude that most of the symbiotic mites found on workers of the army ant E. burchellii are probably relatively harmless guests, exploiting their hosts for phoresis or, for example, to use their waste deposits.

Extensive sampling of several Barremian and Albian–Cenomanian levels across the Aguilón, Oliete and Aliaga subbasins of the Iberian Basin, north‐east Spain, yielded abundant material of new or so far poorly known neoselachians. The faunas consist of 16 different species, five of which represent new species and two new genera: Cantioscyllium brachyplicatum sp. nov. , Platypterix venustulus gen. et sp. nov. , Ptychotrygon pustulata sp. nov. , Ptychotrygon striata sp. nov. and Iberotrygon plagiolophus gen. et sp. nov. In addition, teeth of Heterodontus cf. H. carerens, Lamniformes indet., Pteroscyllium sp., Scyliorhinidae indet., Rhinobatos sp., Spathobatis sp., Belemnobatis sp., Ptychotrygon geyeri, Ptychotrygon sp. and Celtipristis herreroi are described. The new family Ptychotrygonidae is defined. The localities comprise palaeoenvironments ranging from lacustrine and shallow lake to open marine settings. Neoselachians are almost completely absent from continental settings in the Barremian, as a result of prevailing freshwater conditions, but became more abundant in marine strata. The Albian–Cenomanian selachian assemblage is the most profuse and diverse of the three assemblages studied. It is dominated by small, benthic and near‐coastal taxa, for instance Cantioscyllium and Ptychotrygon, and contains several new species, including an endemic batoid, Iberotrygon plagiolophus gen. et sp. nov. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 316–347.  相似文献

Eoptolamna eccentrolopha gen. et sp. nov. (Chondrichthyes, Lamniformes) from the near coastal upper Barremian Artoles Formation (Early Cretaceous) of Castellote (northwestern Spain) is described on the basis of about 50 isolated teeth. This taxon represents one of the earliest lamniform sharks known to date. We hypothesize that most pre‐Aptian lamniforms belong to an ancient group characterized, amongst others, by a very weak gradient monognathic heterodont dental pattern, and by tearing‐type dentition. There is a nutritive groove in the lingual root protuberance in juveniles of Eoptolamna, which persists in adults. A single pair of symphysial and a pair of upper intermediate teeth might have been present. Consequently, a new family, Eoptolamnidae, is introduced to include the new form, as well as Protolamna and probably Leptostyrax. The Eoptolamnidae represent an ancient family within Lamniformes. The origin of lamniform sharks remains, however, ambiguous despite recent advances. The new Spanish taxon is widespread in the Barremian of north‐eastern Spain, and occurs in a wide range of facies from near‐coastal to lake deposits.
