A diplograptid graptolite with strongly introverted thecae and unusual thecal processes was isolated from limestones of the Ordovician Pratt Ferry Formation of Alabama and is described as a new species Dicaulograptus cumdiscus. The thecal processes are referred to as pleural disks. They occur in pairs above every thecal aperture and are inferred to have functioned as suspension processes receiving uplift from small-scale turbulent water motion. Such a function is compatible with a passively buoyant mode of life and is difficult to reconcile with an automobile mode of life. 相似文献

Regulation of the loss of frost hardiness in Pinus radiata by photoperiod and temperature 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Abstract. In controlled environments, the interactive effects of warm (16: 8°C, day: night) and cool (12: 4°C, day: night) temperatures and long (13.5 h) and short (10 h) photoperiods on the dehardening of seedlings of Pinus radiata D. Don were investigated. In another experiment, the effect of four photoperiods from 9 to 14 h was examined. In a third, dehardening at constant temperatures from 5 to 17°C was followed. There was no evidence for an interaction between photoperiod and temperature. Dehardening was temporarily delayed by photoperiods below about 10 h, but there was no other quantitative effect of photoperiod. At constant temperatures, the rate of dehardening was initially constant but declined as the minimum summer frost hardiness was reached. In the initial phase the rate of dehardening was a linear function of temperature, increasing from 0.05°C day−1 at 8°C to 0.30 °C day−1 at 17°C. Temperature controlled the loss of frost hardiness by regulating the rate of dehardening. 相似文献

ABSTRACT.
- 1 Emergence of cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.), from overwintering populations of puparia collected from twenty-one sites in south-west Lancashire, was extremely variable.
- 2 The patterns of emergence indicated that there were two extreme biotypes, one with early- and the other with late-emerging flies. There was also evidence of an intermediate biotype, tending more to early than to late emergence.
- 3 This gradient of biotypes, or clinal divergence, was maintained by populations breeding at different times and by females mating close to their sites of emergence. Non-dispersive females then perpetuated their genotype within their own locality.
- 4 The time of emergence was not obviously associated with the type of host-crop on which larvae had developed.
- 5 The late-emerging biotype was most prevalent around Halsall. The minimum distance between populations of the late- and the early-emerging biotypes was 16 km. 20 km south-east from Halsall only half of the fly population was early-emerging, possibly a result of a displacement of the Halsall biotype by the prevailing NW wind.
- 6 Regional-based forecasts will need to take into account the emergence characteristics of the populations to predict the peak periods of cabbage root fly activity adequately in south-west Lancashire and other areas where emergence patterns differ.

Glutamate Dehydrogenase Activity in Roots: Distribution in a Seedling and Storage Root, and the Effects of Red and Far-red Illuminations 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pisum seedling and Pastinaca storage roots contained high glutanrate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity in areas of reported rapid growth and high phytoctrome content. A similar distribution was observed for malate dehydrogenase. Freeze-thawings of mitochondrial preparations from Pisum roots always resulted in increases of GDH specific activity; however, the observed increases were much larger with basal than apical sections. Both intact and freeze-thawed mitochondrial preparations from seedling roots exhibited increases in GDH activity with time after isolation. In intact mitochondrial preparations from roots of etiolated seedlings, an increase in malate dehydrogenase activity was observed similar to that of GDH activity; however, no increased malate dehydrogenase activity was noted in preparations from light-grown seedlings. Illuminating Pisum seedlings with far-red light slowly increased GDH activity in roots over a period of two weeks. ABSTRACT. Entamoeba histolytica causes amebic dysentery (AD) and liver abscess (ALA). Little is known about protective immunity to amebiasis, and studies in this area have been complicated by the paucity of defined ameba antigens. We examined the proliferative responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with AD and ALA to a recombinant protein containing a portion of the 170 kDa adhesin of E. histolytica (170CR), and to two synthetic peptides (1 and 2) derived from the 170 kDa sequence that were predicted to contain T cell epitopes. A significant number of patients with AD and ALA had PBMC that proliferated to 170CR molecule, and several individuals with ALA and AD had T cells that recognized one or both peptides. Contrarily, individuals from a non-endemic region for amebiasis did not respond to 170CR protein, or to both peptides. In regard to antibody response, nine of fifteen patients with ALA showed antibodies to 170CR protein. These same patients had antibodies to peptide 2. We identified peptides from 170-kDa adhesin that may contain both T and B cell epitopes recognized by some patients with invasive amebiasis. The aim of this research was to determine whether all memory T cells have the same propensity to migrate to the joint in patients
with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Paired synovial fluid and peripheral blood mononuclear cell proliferative responses to
a panel of antigens were measured and the results correlated with a detailed set of laboratory and clinical data from 39 patients
with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Two distinct patterns of proliferative response were found in the majority of patients:
a diverse pattern, in which synovial fluid responses were greater than peripheral blood responses for all antigens tested;
and a restricted pattern, in which peripheral blood responses to some antigens were more vigorous than those in the synovial
fluid compartment. The diverse pattern was generally found in patients with a high acute phase response, whereas patients
without elevated acute phase proteins were more likely to demonstrate a restricted pattern. We propose that an association
between the synovial fluid T cell repertoire and the acute phase response suggests that proinflammatory cytokines may influence
recruitment of memory T cells to an inflammatory site, independent of their antigen specificity. Additionally, increased responses
to enteric bacteria and the presence of αEβ7 T cells in synovial fluid may reflect accumulation of gut associated T cells
in the synovial compartment, even in the absence of an elevated acute phase response. This is the first report of an association
