The theoretical maximum rate of increase for the African elephant is calculated at 7%. This figure agrees closely with the rate of increase observed at Addo Elephant Park, the highest rate of increase reported for elephants living under natural conditions. An elephant population increasing at the maximum rate soon reaches a stable age distribution in which 48% of the animals are older than 11 years of age, (the age of first reproduction) and 6.7% are calves (less than one year old). Several papers have reported frequencies of calves in natural populations of up to twice this percentage. Calculations are presented to show that such high calf frequencies are both theoretically impossible on a sustained basis, and internally inconsistent with the population data presented in these papers.  相似文献

It has been estimated that Lake Malawi, Africa, contains 500–650 endemic species of cichlid fishes, the largest number of vertebrate species endemic to any comparable sized area on the planet. As many of these putative species cannot be distinguished anatomically, these estimates of species richness depend to a great extent on the assumption that sympatrically occurring male colour morphs represent biological species. We have tested this assumption using a combination of behavioural observations of courtship and microsatellite DNA analysis for six putative species of the Pseudotropheus ( Tropheops ) complex and three of the Pseudotropheus ( Maylandia ) complex occurring sympatrically at Nkhata Bay. We were unable to demonstrate assortative courtship for the species pairs Pseudotropheus ( Maylandia ) zebra / P . 'gold zebra' or P. ( Tropheops ) 'band'/ P. ( T .) 'rust' because we were unable to distinguish between the females of these taxa. All other taxa showed clear assortative courtship, except for P. ( T .) 'deep', a deep-water species which was rarely observed. Fixation indices (θST for the infinite allele model, and R ST for the stepwise mutation model) calculated from six microsatellite DNA loci demonstrated significant deviations from panmixia in all pairwise comparisons of putative species, indicating little or no gene flow between populations. All taxa showed high levels of allelic diversity providing evidence that genetic bottlenecking may have been of limited importance in the speciation process. Assortative mating among taxa differing only in male colouration is supportive of theories that speciation in these fishes has been driven by sexual selection by female choice.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Structural and functional patterns in the evolutionof the actinopterygian feeding mechanism are discussed in thecontext of the major monophyletic lineages of ray-finned fishes.A tripartite adductor mandibulae contained in a maxillary-palatoquadratechamber and a single mechanism of mandibular depression mediatedby the obliquus inferioris, sternohyoideus, and hyoid apparatusare primitive features of the Actinopterygii. Halecostome fishesare characterized by having an additional mechanism of mandibulardepression, the levator operculi—opercular series coupling,and a maxilla which swings anteriorly during prey capture. Theseinnovations provide the basis for feeding by inertial suctionwhich is the dominant mode of prey capture throughout the halecostomeradiation. A remarkably consistent kinematic profile occursin all suction-feeding halecostomes. Teleost fishes possessa number of specializations in the front jaws including a geniohyoideusmuscle, loss of the primitive suborbital adductor component,and a mobile premaxilla. Structural innovations in teleost pharyngealjaws include fusion of the dermal tooth plates with endoskeletalgill arch elements, the occurrence of a pharyngeal retractormuscle, and a shift in the origin of the pharyngohyoideus. Thesespecializations relate to increased functional versatility ofthe pharyngeal jaw apparatus as demonstrated by an electromyographicstudy of pharyngeal muscle activity in Esox and Ambloplites.The major feature of the evolution of the actinopterygian feedingmechanism is the increase in structural complexity in both thepharyngeal and front jaws. In the Midwestern US, perennial rhizomatous grasses (PRGs) are considered one of the most promising vegetation types to be used as a cellulosic feedstock for renewable energy production. The potential widespread use of biomass crops for renewable energy production has sparked numerous environmental concerns, including the impacts of land‐use change on the hydrologic cycle. We predicted that total seasonal evapotranspiration (ET) would be higher for PRGs relative to maize resulting from higher leaf area and a prolonged growing season. We further predicted that, compared with maize, higher aboveground biomass associated with PRGs would offset the higher ET and increase water‐use efficiency (WUE) in the context of biomass harvests for liquid biofuel production. To test these predictions, ET was estimated during the 2007 growing season for replicated plots of Miscanthus×giganteus (miscanthus), Panicum virgatum (switchgrass), and Zea mays (maize) using a residual energy balance approach. The combination of a 25% higher mean latent heat flux (λET) and a longer growing season resulted in miscanthus having ca. 55% higher cumulative ET over the growing season compared with maize. Cumulative ET for switchgrass was also higher than maize despite similar seasonal‐mean λET. Based on total harvested aboveground biomass, WUE was ca. 50% higher for maize relative to miscanthus; however, when WUE calculated from only maize grain biomass was compared with WUE calculated from miscanthus harvested aboveground biomass, this difference disappeared. Although WUE between maize and miscanthus differed postsenescence, there were no differences in incremental WUE throughout the growing season. Despite initial predictions, aboveground biomass for switchgrass was less than maize; thus WUE was substantially lower for switchgrass than for either maize scenario. These results indicate that changes in ET due to large‐scale implementation of PRGs in the Midwestern US would likely influence local and regional hydrologic cycles differently than traditional row crops.  相似文献

When cauliflower buds are gently disrupted in distilled waterand homogenized immediately thereafter in hypertonic sucrose,the succinoxidase activity of particles prepared from such homogenatesis considerably less than that of particles prepared from tissuehomogenized in sucrose directly. Other enzymatic functions areimpaired as well. When tissue is washed in water for any lengthof time prior to homogenization, the deleterious effect of hypotonicityis exaggerated. The irreversible injury to the mitochondriabrought about by a hypotonic environment may be precluded tosome extent by maintaining the temperature at 0 C. Washinginjury is also minimized by washing tissue in hypertonic solutions. In addition to the irreversible osmotic injury which the mitochondriamay undergo, a reversible inhibition of succinic dehydrogenasemay be effected by a soluble, heat-stable component of cauliflowerjuice. The latter inhibition appears to be competitive in nature. The reduction of ferricyanide has been used as a means of measuringsuccinic dehydrogenase activity anaerobically. The concordanceof manometric and potentiometric measurements of dehydrogenaseactivity suggests that the ferrocyanide ion may move freelyfrom within the cell to the outer solution. There are indicationsas well that certain endogenous cell materials may be removedfrom the tissue during relatively short washing-periods.  相似文献

  • 1 Butterflies are frequently used to investigate Neotropical diversity, but the family Hesperiidae is almost never employed as a focal group. Sampling Hesperiidae with artificial lures has been used to assist in species richness estimates of males that use bird droppings as a resource, but its effectiveness for estimating total hesperiid site diversity is unknown.
  • 2 This study characterises species richness and abundance in a diverse assemblage of Hesperiidae sampled at artificial lures. Sampled and estimated richness among taxonomic subsets were compared to the known site richness. These comparisons are used to assess artificial lures as a method for sampling total richness of Hesperiidae. We tested for potential differences in attraction in lures placed with and without the presence of army ant swarms.
  • 3 Five years of intermittent sampling with lures recovered 65% of the known Hesperiidae species richness at the study site. We found the subfamilies were differentially attracted to lures, where 86% of Eudaminae, 56% of Hesperiinae and 55% of Pyrginae species known from the site were recovered by lures. Species accumulation and taxonomic diversity differed among lures placed alone, and those placed in the presence of army ants.
  • 4 Our results suggest that sampling with artificial lures can be used to estimate diversity of Neotropical Eudaminae and a few tribes of Hesperiinae at some sites. Available evidence indicates that Hesperiidae feeding at bird droppings is predominately a Neotropical phenomenon. Finally, we conclude that estimating diversity in Neotropical Hesperiidae will require long‐term studies that use multiple sampling techniques.

1. Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) are often the only surviving fish species in acidified lakes. We studied four lakes along a gradient of recovery from acidification and that had different food web complexities. All had abundant yellow perch, two had low piscivore abundance, one had a well‐established piscivore population and one was manipulated by introducing piscivorous smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu). We hypothesised that there would be strong effects on perch abundance, behaviour and diet induced by the presence of piscivores. 2. In the manipulated lake, the bass reduced yellow perch abundance by 75% over a 2‐year period. Concomitantly, perch use of the pelagic habitat fell from 48 to 40%. 3. In contrast to findings from less disturbed systems, yellow perch in the littoral zone of the manipulated lake did not strongly shift from zooplankton to benthic food sources after the arrival of piscivores. Diet analysis using stable carbon isotopes revealed a strong continued reliance on zooplankton in all lakes, independent of the degree of piscivory. The failure to switch to benthos in the refuge area of the littoral zone is most likely related to the depauperate benthos communities in these formerly acidified lakes. 4. Yellow perch in lakes recovering from acidification face a considerable ecological challenge as the necessary switch to benthic diet is hindered by a low abundance of benthos. The arrival of piscivores in these recovering lakes imposes further restrictions on perch access to food items. We infer that future recovery of perch populations (and higher trophic levels) will have to be preceded by the re‐establishment of diverse benthic macroinvertebrate communities in these lakes.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Schizonts were found in the middle and lower third of the small intestine of two calves killed 12 and 14 days after they had been inoculated with pure cultures of oocysts of Eimeria auburnensis. The schizonts ranged from 78 to 250 μ long by 78 to 150 μ wide (mean 92 by 139.9 μ). They were usually located deep in the lamina propria near the muscularis mucosae instead of in the villi where most schizonts of Eimeria bovis are found. The schizonts of E. auburnensis resembled the previously described large microgametocytes of this species but were distinguishable morphologically and by histochemical stains. The microgametocytes were much larger than previously reported; one measured 91 by 287.5 μ.  相似文献

Alpine species often have similar demographic responses to Pleistocene climate changes, but exhibit different spatial patterns of genetic diversity. Using a comparative phylogeographical approach, we examined the factors influencing lineage formation in three alpine carabid beetles of the genus Nebria Latreille inhabiting the California Sierra Nevada. These flightless beetles differ in altitudinal zonation and habitat preferences, but overlap spatially, have limited dispersal capacities and share life history characteristics. Species distribution modelling predicted decreasing population connectivity in relation to increasing altitudinal preferences. Diversity patterns at the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene revealed north–south genetic structure and recent population growth in all three species. The high‐elevation‐restricted species, Nebria ingens Horn, exhibited a deep phylogeographical split, morphological divergence and evidence of limited, unidirectional gene flow towards the south. This was supported by additional data from three nuclear genes and isolation with migration analysis. Nebria spatulata Van Dyke, inhabiting an intermediate altitudinal range, exhibited fixed morphological differences between northern and southern populations, but showed limited structure. The broadly distributed Nebria ovipennis LeConte showed less structure and lacked morphological variation. Diversification of these Nebria species supports the role of altitudinal zonation in lineage formation and is consistent with the Pleistocene species pump model. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献
