Ceratonia siliqua L. seeds were germinated in water and undera range of PEG 4000-induced moisture stresses. Germination wasretarded as water stress was stronger. Axis growth, total dryweight decrease, and starch formation in the embryo were closelycorrelated to galactomannan depletion, the latter being inhibitedwith lower external water potential. Endosperm -galactosidasewas inhibited in PEG-germinated seeds, while embryo -galactosidaseactivity was not significantly affected. Soluble sugar contentwas higher in cotyledons of seeds geminated under stress conditions,mainly due to higher sucrose accumulation. The higher sugarcontent in the endosperm was mainly due to higher galactoseand mannose content. Water stress effected a delay in the raffinose-typeoligosaccharide depletion.  相似文献

Four-d-old Ceratonia siliqua L. seedlings were treated with30% PEG 4000 for several time periods, or with 26.5% and 25%PEG for 48 h. Drought stress was imposed on some seedlings inorder to compare the results of stress due to drought with thosedue to the application of PEG. The water content of the axisand cotyledons and their osmotic potentials decreased with stressfor the first 72 h and then remained constant, whilst dry weightincreased after the first 24 h of imposed stress. Results implythe existence of an osmoregulation mechanism which was morepronounced when the stress was mild. Sucrose content increasedwith stress in both axes and cotyledons, and a negative correlationwas found between osmotic potential and sucrose content in bothembryo parts, suggesting the involvement of sucrose in the osmoregulationmechanism. Upon stress recovery sucrose content decreased andfructose accumulated in the axes. Sucrose synthetase activitywas very low in cotyledons, while acid and alkaline invertaseactivity was too low to be measured. PEG-induced stress causedsucrose synthetase activity to decrease in both axes and cotyledons,while upon stress recovery sucrose synthetase activity increased.The activity of both invertases in the axes did not change significantlywith stress. Correlation of sucrose content with sucrose synthetaseactivity suggests that this enzyme is involved in the controlof osmoregulation in both parts of the embryo.  相似文献

The properties of the giant axon of the squid Loligo pealii were studied at different hydrostatic pressures from 14.7 to 16,000 psi. At 4000 psi the resting potential, the membrane resistance, membrane capacity, the conduction velocity, the amplitude of the action potential, and the maximal change in the membrane impedance during activity were only slightly affected. At the same pressure the duration of the falling phase of the action potential was increased by about 40 to 60 per cent and the duration of the rising phase by about 20 to 35 per cent. The duration of the membrane impedance change during activity was increased by 50 to 100 per cent at 4000 psi. At pressures even slightly above atmospheric the threshold membrane current was appreciably reduced. At about 3000 to 7000 psi the fiber fired spontaneously. At pressures considerably above 5000 psi the membrane resistance decreased to about one-half to one-third the original value. The narcotizing effect upon the nerve fiber of 3 to 7 per cent ethanol was partly or almost completely opposed by low temperatures or high pressures.  相似文献

Single nerve fibers were isolated from the nerve innervating the sartorius or semitendinosus muscle of the toad (Bufo marinus). Single nerve fiber responses were recorded with three arrangements of the "bridge insulator" method. During stimulation at 50 to 150 pulses per second for 20 to 140 minutes the spike duration was progressively increased. After tetanization the spike duration usually continued to increase at a more rapid rate. Within 5 to 60 minutes further prolongation stopped and within 1 to 10 hours the spike duration was normal. The duration of the response of tetanized fibers was from 2.5 to more than 10 times the spike duration of untetanized fibers. Prolongation was observed in nerve fibers isolated from nerves tetanized in vivo.  相似文献

The effect of water stress in three Quercus species belongingto different habitats is investigated. Chlorophyll concentrationdecreased in all Quercus species with the greatest decreaseoccurring in Quercus robur. An increase of total carotenoidcontent was observed in Quercus coccifera and Quercus ilex,while in Q. robur water stress effected a carotenoid contentreduction. Anthocyanins increased with decreasing relative watercontent in the three Quercus species, the largest increase occurringin Q. coccifera. A correlation between xerophytic characterand pigment concentration is discussed.  相似文献

Quercus coccifera L. and Q. ilex L. leaves, collected in winter,when the plants were in full turgor, were treated with polyethyleneglycol (PEG) with a water potential of –48 and –65bar, at 15 °C and at 30 °C, for 2 days. The responseof each species differs with temperature as far as the plastidpigment, anthocyanin and soluble sugar content is concerned.Thus Q. ilex is affected more at 15 °C rather than at 30°C, while in Q. coccifera, apart from a small increase inanthocyanins, no significant change was observed at 15 °C.On the contrary, at 30 °C significant changes were observedin all studied parameters. Chloroplast pigments decreased generallyon the first day and their content either dropped further orincreased to reach the control values on the second day. Alltreatments resulted in an increase in anthocyanin content. Solublesugar content raised in Q. ilex at 15 °C and decreased inboth species at 30 °C.
